Proper Review, finally
So this was my first real club night at Vola, and the first time hearing a full set from any of the DJ's. I had not heard a full set from any of them, so I was happy to be going out for some new experiences.
After getting in around 10:30pm, there were some people there but not many, most were off the side, waiting for some more bodies and tunes they liked. It was interesting, looking at the different groups of people there. I defintely saw a lot of groups of friends who were clearly there for some trance that they knew. It was kinda cool, because the crowd was almost timid at the begining (didn't last long). The place looked awesome. I think Vola did a great job of making it look good without it being over whelming. Also, they kept the intimate feel by adding decorations and lighting, but nothing that felt like it was a castle wall.
DJ Angelo Petrucci
Where has this guy been? It was an absolute pleasure listening him warm us up. He kept it at that exact right spot with some energy to move our feet, but just a little deep because it was early in the night. The track selection was fantastic, he had plenty of new tracks, but just a couple classic vocals to gather the crowd together, to make them chant as a group. And he didn't have any of those awful break downs that are so representative of big trance tracks these days, which makes that feeling of progression consistent and enjoyable. Please, please play in Toronto more often.
Ronski Speed
He played a pretty enjoyable set for the most part, but it felt like it dragged on for at least 40 minutes too long. Unfortunately he played too many of those trance songs I was just talking about, build up with melody, which just breaks down into hard farting beat, with no soul. That's why I felt it went too long, because those builds were so big, the energy was built so early in the set, that there really was no where else left to go. But, in between those, he did have some kick ass tracks, which kept me moving, and which sounded like the trance I loved. I'd probably see him again if he was in town, just for those highs.
Stoneface and Terminal
I didn't get to stay too long, so I cannot say much about what I heard there. I did listen to the recorded mp3, and liked what i heard. It was a solid set, with some great classics, but lots of new stuff. I actually recognized a lot of their set, which I was suprised at, but looking at their tracklist, it was a lot of their own productions or remixes, which then makes sense.
The crowd was epic that night. So many smiling faces, friends and strangers high fiving, genuine PLUR in the air. That was probably the high light for me. It felt soo good to just dance and laugh, and jump as you were carried away on a beat, it has been a looooooong time. That's the thing about a good trance party, you are almost giddy with excitement, just to be there enjoying all the aspects of the night. Pure Trance Productions, Vola, you guys pulled it off very well, and I hope you guys can do it again and again.
But to say it one more time: set of the night goes to Petrucci.
