actually the best reason to go analog is that vinyl can replay a bigger frequency range than CDs or MP3s. The utlra low frequencies that only your body can feel can only be replayed in analog format, so if u are using mp3s or cd then ur sound will be "lighter".
Vinyls are cool to have, theres nothing more impressive then a huge collection of vinyl. I have seen some huge cd collections... not even close to cool(and you are bound to find far to much country and rap and dj sammy and britney spears)
Another plus for vinyl... you can't hang a vinyl from your rear view mirror(maybe a 7") like with cds (Why the hell do people do it?)
With cd's you are always bound to have more songs that you don't want, than with vinyl, after a while your cd collection will contain FAR more shit songs than good ones, so you end up with a shit collection in anycase and the more cd's you buy the worse your collection becomes.

Originally posted by ionized A good point, but I think you'll find that most cd djs are going with digital downloads for their tracks these days. I tried to find good trance on 'purchased' cds and it just aint out there, not the full length versions anyway... |
Well if i had the money i would go vinyl but since i dont im just going to use 2 cd players and 1 TT in my room. The TT is my dads old direct drive one but it has pitch control... Even if the pitch control is a nob

Vinyl vs. CDs
Without a doubt VINYL ROCKS!! Not only are you expressing musiclly but, vinyl is poetry in motion! Art, skills, personal style, and dont forget that warm fuzzy feeling you get all over when you finally find that one piece of wax you've been searching for for months and its finally sitting in your hands(whata RUSH MAN!!). CDs to me if anything used as a tool but never as a frontman. CDs are for karaoke, and will have everyone going out and buying (CD) mixers. And finally, If it were easy everyone will be doing it..err you CD mixer worshiper you.LOL I have friends that swear by them butI feel they lack the skills to really appreciate the Art..TY and have a nice day.

If anything, CDs are harder to mix on. You can't see the buildups of the track like you can in Vinyl so you need to know the track better. The pitch shifters are less tactile that touching the edge of the platter or twisting the spindle like you do on Vinyl, hence take more getting used to.
Plus if you want to take advantge or loops, samples and reverse play it means you can take your techniques to a much higher level which in turn makes mixing that much harder.
Saying someone lacks the 'skills' because they mix on CDs is just showing your complete ignorance of new technology. Infact I feel sorry for you, since your obviously going to be left behind when more forward thinking DJs embrace the digital format.
Fair enough, if its all about collecting hard to find tracks for you, then Vinyl certainly has it. Your not going to find that kind of nostalgia in the digital realm. But if you mix because you love expressing yourself and creating technical mixes that push forward the genre, then baby... CDs have got it!
LOL..nice response you got me.
Love the user text Nou.. hehe.
I use vinyl because i am old.. Actually i just like the feel of wax and of any analog gear. I'd rather spin vinyl and play on a Waldorf, than have some digital software program replicate it. You can try all you want, but digital will never copy that warm, real sound of analog gear.

At home, I use to play vynil because I haven't cd players.. I don't work and that would be too expensive for me at this moment. That's become a habbit to play with 12' and I couldn't immediatly change my way for CD's. To take a vynil gives a different psychologic feeling and then, it's easier. It's important to work with his fingers more .. to feel and control your mix (change the speed, turn the vynil, scratching,..). It's possible with CD's too but you can't put your hand on the record. Without seeing my record or touching it, I can't...
When I had my first and only experience in a club, I used at least a CD for the first track and the last track in my DJ set, just to say that you spin with CD's too..
haha
Man, There is nothng that beats the feel of vinyl. You are always in control. When you mix with CD's, you dont have the same feeling. Some may disagree with me. My advise is to stick with vinyl. If your problem is related to the fact that you simply cannot find the tunes you want, there is a program out there called Final Scratch, which takes MP3's and puts them to vinyl using this new technology. Stick with vinyl man, you cant go wrong

VINYL RULES!!
But in my country i prefer to use CD (Rip from Mp3)... because it is hard to get Trance vinyls...
Both Are GREAT actually!
never really got to DJ with CDs, lack of $$ but if i had the choice between vinyl and CDs i would take vinyl, mostly becuase vinyl is what the DJ started out with and when someone hears "DJ", vinyl is what pops up in their mind at first... at least in my mind....
Everybody spins vinyl when they start out..well most people anyways..like me, I started liking CD's when I bought my first pioneer cdj-100's.Now I burn the vinyl to cd mainly its more convienent for me to carry them to gigs and I dont have to worry much about them wearing out after alot of play. I'm prepared..flame suit on.

Dear God,
Please let this thread and all like it die. Thanks. Oh, btw...don't make it rain in southern California this weekend, I need to get a tan. Thanks again bud!
Oh holy carp hadn't looked in this thread in like 2 years and I didn't really read through.
To this day this is a debate still going strong no doubt but the truth is Cds are truly something of option.
One reason people say NO to cds is that that implies burning of mp3s, aka low quality.
We are at a stage today with legal digital downloads where a legal 192 kbps is almost always better then 320 kbps rls group mp3.
Now with the option of getting the tracks legally, directly from a reliable source makes mp3s totally the way to go.
Compare a purchased mp3 with a rip of the track and in EVERY case the purchased one sounds much better regardless of the differences in bitrates.
My point:
if you got the money continue the vinyl; if not, go cd/mp3(LEGAL!).
We are also at a stage with the internet that tracks are out there so fast ( legally or not ... but that's a separate debate ) that by the time you actually get the vinyl the track is already old.....
what to do what to do.....
I can never find the songs i want on any of those internet mp3 sites. Not for a while will you be able to buy that rare vinyl you want as an mp3 off the net.

i like both formats, however each time i play music with cds, i seem to be able to program a set a lot better. with vinyl, im all over the place. it might be because my collection is highly disorganized but i find with cds, i can think like tracks ahead and i cant with vinyl. right now im actually thinking of switching from vinyl to cds, however i will have the turntables to record all the tracks i want to cds.
About the lack of "warmth" of sound when using cds in comparison to vinyl.... why couldn't you just use a filter like the vestax dwg-x1 http://www.joyryderecords.com/vestaxDWGX1.htm and help get this "warmth" back? B.T.W. I am not arguing for one side...I like to use both.
