Proitious vs Nabistai Results

Ok Here's the results!

Times of the mixes? #1 was 45 and #2 was 74 mins?! They should have been the same time as this allows mix #2 to get more "wrong" with this type of mark scheme!

ok i am quite harshe with my judging, you have to understand that these are both v.good mixes and beat the crap out of 90% of the actually djs playing in my local clubs! I try and pick out all that can be inproved so that you will be the next Tiesto in months!

Here are my judging criteria: (Based on Flesch's)

4pts Intro Track
10pts Consistent Beatmatching
10pts Consistent Phrasematching
10pts (Harmonics), Volume Matching and Gain Structure
10pts Track Selection
10pts Mixing Style/Originality
5pts Sound Quality
3pts Effects
5pts Track Order
3pts Exit Track

Mix #1

1.AvB ft Ray Wilson - Yet another Day
2.Neo & Farina - Barchetta (Original)
3.Exposure - Magic Impuls (Original)
4.Midway - Monkey Forest (Original Mix)
5.Nu-NRG - Take Your Air
6.Plastic Boy - Live another Life
7.System f - Solstice (Extended Mix)
8.Norman Dj - Go Back (Dj Noe Rmx)
9.Derb - In Afrika (Club Mix)

2pts Intro Track
6pts Consistent Beatmatching
7pts Consistent Phrasematching
7pts (Harmonics), Volume Matching and Gain Structure
8pts Track Selection
7pts Mixing Style/Originality
2pts Sound Quality
1pts Effects
8pts Track Order
1pts Exit Track

49/70 - 70%

I liked the track selection and the constant flow of trance, but this was slightly hindered by the beats, which at places were off and out. However this was slightly undermined by the good timing and harmonics which kept the dance going! I didnt knock off a lot of marks due to the the volume problems, probably wasnt your fault but this did, unfortunately, make it more difficult to appreciate your mixing and the tunes! The main criticism's I had were that it was one tune after another, which would be great for a peak time set, but there was little build up, and the end tracks were a bit out of style with the rest of the mix. But they were tunes, reasonable unheard and went well together, which is why I rewarded you on your track order. Good 1st mix, and when the volume probs are fixed I look forward to another mix! ps. Try wavelab, d/l it off the net.

Mix #2

Jewel - Intuition (Markus Schulz Coldharbor Mix)
Armin Van Buuren - Sunburn (Jamie Anderson Mix)
Afterburn - Summersun (Original Mix)
Condor - Velvet Dreams (Skylight Mix)
Firewall - Sincere (Original Mix)
Rapid Eye - Stealing Beauity (r.e. mix)
Plastic Boy - Live Another Life (Original Mix)
NRC - Here Comes The Rain (Push Instrumental Mix)
Rusch & Murray- Epic (Above & Beyond Remix)
Aurora - Sleeping Satellite (Super 8 Remix)
Saltwater - The Legacy (Alphazone Remix)
Mystery - Feel For You (Original Mix)

3pts Intro Track
9pts Consistent Beatmatching
8pts Consistent Phrasematching
8pts (Harmonics), Volume Matching and Gain Structure
7pts Track Selection
6pts Mixing Style/Originality
5pts Sound Quality
2pts Effects
2pts Track Order
3pts Exit Track

53/70 - 76% - Winner!

Great mix! Very good beat mixing and phase, good tracks and a solid mix. Just a few criticisms; the first track is quite progressive and after you jump straight into trance! The main problem with this mix is the track order, they could be swapped about to create a more flowing build up, which would add a greater emphasize to the last tunes, making them more uplifting. Again its a peak time set and quite a tune set, with some great tunes, and some more less well known ones. There is only one transition which stood out from the rest, I think it was #7 where the harmonics were out and it went out of time. Apart from these minor errors this was a great mix, good mixing and consistency but it did also lack the DJ's originality. There were some good effects used but the mix wouldn't have stood out in originality from others, i.e. few harmonic transitions were attempted, but this is only my personal preference! ANYHOW, GOOD MIX AND CONGRATULATIONS!

Thanks for judging and for giving such an extensive quotation . Now I know a little more about the points that I should work a little harder on and that I should focus on a little more.

I know it was a pretty hard set, but I was already mixin for about 45 minutes before I taped this, so I wanted the song to be a little more *boomboom* you know

I know the volume changing was a little irritating but it was the first time that I recorded a set on my computer, but more important I know how I can fix it

I wasn't to happy about this set myself because I have done better, but afterall the final ruling wasn't devastating

Thanks again

PS: Congratulations to Proitious

Now, I judged the mixes in my folder. And, I must say, both please me very much. I think, the beatmatching work of mix 1 is done better. But on the other hand, I think that there is a better build-up in mix 2. It starts of with some pretty (excuse me) boring tracks and then gets better every minit. Mix 2 is more my style actually... but, after thinking it over, and relistening to both mixes, I say, Mix 1 wins... (sorry author of mix 2)

About my mix:
My competetor is Sym, I already sent him a couple of mails, so, no problem there. We'll prolly arrange something about mix # and I'll tell him to put his mix in your folder...

Any word on Sym uploading his mix yet? It's been a while since the first challenge, almost a week, and if it was a formal challenge, then the person who was challenged will loose. I can change this since I'm an admin now, but let's try to wrap things up here so we can move on to other challenges!

I'm interested in the league concept....I can't be arsed reading 20 odd pages of posts (some of which are basically slanging matches).

Ifsomeone could be so kind as to tell me the brief outline of the rules, I would be grateful.

I have broadband access, so uploading is no probs......thanks

Tiger777 is on vacation at the moment (return the 27th) so I guess someone else must try to contact sym OR if the week passes, give victory to Tiger 777 (as he DID upload a mix)

@ TheMightyCad: the rulez are in the 1st post

Regarding the match of Tiger777 versus Sym, I have contacted Sym and he cannot get his SoundForge working and therefore conceeds. I will report the loss.

Does anyone in a current match not have a judge? I am now free.

TommyD Vs. Dj NGE

Okay here it goes!

Mix 1

2/4pts Intro Track

I think that this track was a poor choice for intro tracks. The beginning is pretty boring and it takes it almost 2.5 minutes to even start going somewhere.

5/10pts Consistent Beatmatching

Beatmatching was slightly off on the second transition. The 4th transition was of course not beatmatched well at all, but Im sure you know that. It was a quick fix, but then you overcompensated too much and it became unbeatmatched again. The 5th was also a touch off for a few seconds. The 6th transition was going to be a really good one, but then the beatmatching was off just enough to notice itXthis was due to the delay in the vocals compared to the live track. Transition 7 was not beatmatched 100%. Your beatmatching wasnt horrible, but the imperfections took enough away from the set.

8/10pts Consistent Phrasematching

The third transition didnt come in phrasematched. It was hard to tell, but it was noticeable to me. By this I dont mean that the tracks were not phrasematched, but rather you didnt mix the track in in-phrase. In general you did a good job, but work on bring the cue track in in-phrase.

8/10pts Track Key Matching, Volume Matching and Gain Structure

Your 5th transition was a bit bass heavy and too loud. Youve done a much better job with volumes on all of your previous transitions. The volume on the transition into the 7th track was a bit loud. Transition 7 was not in key.

7/10pts Track Selection

I think that most of these tracks are pretty good, but they are nothing really that spectacular. Track 4 especially, while it is a pretty good track, takes the energy right out of your set because there are so many long gaps of silence and beatlessness.

7/10pts +1 Mixing Style/Originality

You could have mixed out of track 1 at around 5 minutes instead of at 7 minutes, though your transition was close to flawless and the tracks went very well together. Your last transition really brought the whole set together (bonus point), for two reasons: First, it was very well done as far as elimination of the bass and making it a very original transition. Second, the two tracks brought up the energy beyond the rest of the set and would be sure to hype the crowd up. The last track had a few down tempo parts, but otherwise it was a great way to end a set. I think that this is a good track choice for originality, I would work on tightening up your mixesXespecially those first few!

5/5pts Sound Quality

No problems here.

1/3pts Effects

The jet/flanger effect during the first track were not in phrase and cut too short. Other than this, you didnt do any effects that I could pick out.

4/5pts Track Order

I think that with the tracks that you selected there were a few in the middle and end that could have been more towards to beginning, but otherwise good job.

2/3pts Exit Track

The track just kind of wound down at the end with no real grace or closure.

Total = 50/70 = 71%

Mix 2

4/4pts Intro Track

I really liked this track as an intro track. Vocal intro tracks are very good IMO, because they entice the audience to listen even when the track isnt as upbeat as the rest of the set. The effects during the beginning of the track really helped it pick up too.

10/10pts Consistent Beatmatching

Your first transition was very good extended, quality beatmatching! In fact, you tend to draw your transitions out quite nicely throughout the set. I noticed no beatmatching errors.

10/10pts Consistent Phrasematching

You are always right on with phrasematching! Everything that you do is in phrase, very well done, this is one thing that most amateur djs slack on.

8/10pts Track Key Matching, Volume Matching and Gain Structure

The volume level on track 5 is a bit loud compared to the rest of your set. All the tracks are in key and the volumes are good for most of the set. It is best at the start and middle, and gets a bit worse at the end.

9/10pts Track Selection

These tracks are made for each other! I would probably take out the Plastic Boy track and switch it with something not as harsh and grainy, but other than that these trackXas I have said aboveXare made for each other!

8/10pts Mixing Style/Originality

I think that you draw out your transition a bit longer than needed, but if that is your style, then I cant argue. What I do suggest is that while you exit the live track at the right time, you bring in the next track a bit too early. This will help you tighten up your transitions a bit.

4/5pts Sound Quality

The balance on your 6th track was quite wacky for the first minute or so. It also is kind of low quality as far as the mids and highs go. Im assuming that it was an MP3 or the eqs werent adjusted correctlyXI know that some vinyl doesnt have increadible sound quality (due to mastering), but I could pick this track out specifically out of all of your others to have the worst sound quality.

1/3pts +2 Effects

The scratching that you did during the beginning of the set was very very well timed. Scratching is incredibly hard to pull off in a trance set and you did it very tastefully and well timed (bonus points!). Other than this, there really werent any effects that I could pick out.

4/5pts Track Order

The first two tracks are incredibly well suited for each other. The last three tracks dont mesh as well as the rest of your set, but they do fit together.

2/3pts Exit Track

I own this track I think that there are other better suited exit tracks because this one drops down the energy at the end with just a bass beat. But it does end the set well and your spin down is nice too.

Total = 62/70 = 89% (the best score Ive given so far, I believe!)

I declare mix2 to be the undeniable winner. Mix1 was good quality, but mix2 is one of the best mixes I have heard so far in this competition! Congratulations!
