Good to see you enjoyed Godfather 1 & 2, probably among the best films ever. Godfather 3, on the other hand, is probably among the shittest movies ever.

Why is it that the third film in a trilogy is almost always the shittiest? (Godfather 3, Scream 3, Return of the Jedi, Matrix Revolutions etc) Return of the King seems to be the only exception...

Ok, theres 2 things, from last month my comp is makin these weird ass noises very loud... like a car choking on bad oil or something... when you start the pc up it makes it the it goes away.. is it dying??

also i wanna reformt my pc BUT all of a sudden a couple months ago my floppy drive doesn't work.. like it doesn't turn on to read floppy discs and stuff. Now when i format the pc, doesn't it need the floppy drive to load like a boot disc or something??? is there another way around this? could i use like a cd instead of a floppy??

cheers,

The very loud grinding sound is probably a fan dying. Open up the case while it's making the noise and you'll probably see which one it is.

If you're going to reformat, you won't need your floppy drive if your computer is less than about 3-4 years old. You will be able to just boot directly off the Windows CD (though if it doesn't work and you're using a burnt copy of a friend's CD, don't come complaining to me ).

Posted by escee on Mar-10-2004 23:03:

certainly sounds like a fan dying.

and if you do need a floppy drive, go and buy from a computer store, they are only 10 dollars or so. But yeah, you should be able to boot from the cd.

Ok cool thanx, will the fan cause major problem if i leave it? cause it seems to work still but just makes very bad noises.

Also my comp is like 6+ years old, so will that be bad?? Because i remember one day i wanted to take my pc to a comp shop to get it fixed, on it's way there the whole thing stuffed up and wouldn't turn on anymore.. so i had to pay to get that fixed awell ... BUT at that time the floppy still didn't work and they installed a brand new windows, so most likely it was done off CD but i don't know how too

buy a new floppy drive they are like $7 not exactly gonna break the bank

Depends which fan it is. If it's the CPU fan, that's bad, very very bad.

Case fan isn't as much of a problem, though you'll probably need to leave the case open for the components to stay cool.

As for the floppy drive, I'd just buy a new one. They aren't expensive and your computer is old enough to not be sure if it'll boot from CD.

What i find when my pc does that is i give the fan a good clean with a brush, sometimes its just dust collected that hinders the fan. On reformatin your pc just go to the BIOS and set Boot disk to your E drive (or whateva your cd drive letter is) put the windows cd in and bobs your uncle.

Give it a clean first then see if its still a broken fan, my 2c worth anyway.

normally have 3 fans, cpu, gpu or case fan. Clean em all.

The first time you open your case is a bit daunting buts its good to know whats in there. I opened it for first time about 1 year ago, ask escee i was busting his nuts, since then ive inserted removed parts left right center. Its quitte easy.

ps. make sure power is off.

CPU fan, hmmm... now you brought that up i'm thinking something might be up with that because last time (about a month ago) i took my comp apart, i touched the CPU chip thing and it was loose as hell... like if i nudged it anymore it would just pracitically come out... yeh gonna go to the shop now or 2moro and buy a floppy, cheers Joel

Thanx Paulie, big help there. I know exactly what you mean, you know i think it was about 8 months ago the power supply thing in my comp blew up while i was using it lol.. pretty freaky, so yeh i checked the comp and there was a shitload of dust and crap... might have stopped the airflow and heated the shit up to blow up, destoryed alot of shit with it too . But cheers dude, will do that now.

Thanx again ppl!!

Anyway, if your cpu's or video cards fan is making noises, simply unscrew the fan from the heatsink, turn in upside down, remove the backing/sealing tape, and add a few drops of singer oil into the fan bearings.

viola!
