Tortured Ugandan Political Prisoner Wishes Uganda Had Oil

April 23, 2003

KAMPALA, UGANDAA day after having his hands amputated by soldiers backing President Yoweri Museveni's brutal regime, Ugandan political prisoner Otobo Ankole expressed regret Monday over Uganda's lack of oil reserves. "I dream of the U.S. one day fighting for the liberation of the oppressed Ugandan people," said Ankole as he nursed his bloody stumps. "But, alas, our number-one natural resource is sugar cane." Ankole, whose wife, parents, and five children were among the 4,000 slaughtered in Uganda's ethnic killings of 2002, then bowed his head and said a prayer for petroleum.

I really wonder how the police failed to prevent (3000?) of them from getting onto the Gardiner in the first place. From what I understand the protests have been closely monitored by the police who have been tracking their activity & movement, albeit even more so now in light of all this.

Who would I go to, to get my money back? The LTTE?

You would suck it up, for the same reason that you suck up every other cause of traffic, ie. car accidents, volume, car fires, people on the shoulder, road closures, etc.

which are all accidents. This was not an accident. This was an illegal activity done by a bunch of welfare collecting losers.

WTF do they want from Canada? Lets face it, unless Sri Lanka has a shitload of oil or unless there is something in it for US noone will ever go there. Why do these people think that other countries are just gonna go interfere in every civil war?

this could be some of the stupidest reasoning I've read yet

What's stupid is how ridiculous you all sound for being a bunch of cry babies.

When someone gets in a car accident and you finally pass them after they've pulled off on the shoulder, do you get out, ask whose fault it was, and then demand compensation for your time? Do you ask them for the $25 missed appointment fee, or the rebooking charge on your flight, or the $10 in gas you wasted sitting in traffic?

No, but no one intentionally gets in a car accident to disrupt other peoples lives...you can manage your time accordingly regarding high volume times on the highway...you can check the forecast to see if the roads will be bad and adjust your travel time...there's not much you can do in planning for a mob of maniacs

not the same thing. Accidents do not happen on purpose. These people, if you can call them that, intentionally disrupted lives of others. I hope that they never ever get what they want.

What about road rage?
Or talking on a cell phone?
Or drinking and driving?

The first one is not illegal, 2nd one will be illegal soon and the third is illegal just like the protest on the highway.

even while doing any of these things...the accidents are still that...accidents

It's accidental that you didn't have the smarts to check the traffic report before leaving, either.
It's accidental that you didn't leave enough time for traffic in driving to the airport for such an important flight.

Get over it.

No I get what you are saying, but that's not planned.

Those are Events that all occur unplanned. (with the exception of reckless driving and drinking and driving)

The protest was planned and they purposely disturbed people's lives.

I think you'd be singing a different tune if you were one of the people stuck in that 4 hour traffic jam, for no good reason....

I know I'd be super pissed to be wasting a part of my weekend and mothers day on Tamil BS...

ok well this thread would have been pointless if i didnt interfere it would have just been about people bashing tamils.

at least i brought on a new perspective although limited in defense i must admit.

my husband (fuck that sounds weird) came home last night spewing the same shit that i see on this board..so i basically told him this..

obviously these people are protesting because they feel a sense of desperation. Maybe they have family or friends that are dead or in danger of being hurt. Maybe they are so desperate and afraid that they have acted out in their desperation..was it a smart move..no..pretty idiotic..but they obviously have motives that stem from something far more deep seeded than our trivial need to have a traffic jam free day..when he started spewing more hate..i told him to shut the fuck up cuz in reality, what they had done did not affect his life in any shape or form..he was in the comfort of his own home..i can't stand people that use situations to unleash their inner bigots..(as i stated in an earlier post) and it disgusted me that my husband was joining the ranks of those that are using this episode to slam a whole group of people in this city....it's disgusting how it is open season to talk smack about certain groups of people but if you even breath a perceived negative comment about other groups...all hell breaks loose.

people say, Canada shouldn't get involved or that it's not our issue..well maybe not..maybe the richest and most powerful in the world should stay out of the plight of the underdeveloped, non north american, third world contries...why bother..let them all rot..and social conciousness..fuck that too...if that was the sentiment our government and several other governments had during world war 2...we would possibly be living in a society far worse than the one we have to navigate through now..

it's easy for all of us to judge when we have no personal connection..but i do know that there are many people on this board that come from immigrant families..and i also know that none of us can imagine the desperation of the tamils in this city..i don't know what i would do if my family back home was being killed..i don't know how i would eat, sleep, work..etc...knowing that i could get a call at any moment with horrible news....and MAYBE if i was desperate enough, scared enough..I would jump on the Gardiner and protest..maybe i just would..

so in the words of a great man..

FUCK TA!

Maybe they should subscribe to the jayx1 school of thought and bitch about it on a message board instead of stepping up and drawing attention to an issue they care about.

I personally wish I had something to care about enough that would make me break the law in protest, but I don't. Like most people here, I have things pretty easy. So I can't pretend to imagine what drives 1000 people to put their kids on the gardiner...to me that is desperation. These people are not protesting for marijuana or bike lanes here folks.

You guys all sound like idiots for bitch bitch bitch over traffic. TRAFFIC.

I have no issue with them protesting....but what they did was illegal and they should be punished appropriately. Personally, I don't care how bad it is in their home country....sure if I had family there I would be devistated that they were either dead or in serious harm but I wouldn't expect the country I moved to to do anything about it.

ridicuolous

I'm with you on this one buddy!

Though I dont agree with their methods, they did get their message across(whatever that may be). Its pretty sad, a good friend of mine lost 2 of his family members during the shelling. And what's more sad is that he was trying to sponsor them into the country for a few years now, but due to strict immigration(war on terror.. ) they were unable to come.

I think whats more frustrating also is that the aid money that Canada sent($3 million) was not sent to the appropriate place because the Sri Lankan government got a hold of it. And theyve deported all foreign press AND foreign aid workers. Clearly the government is up to something.

I do agree that it is annoying and very inconvenient, but its causing a stir among people, and I think thats what they wanted. I was pretty ticked off being stuck on the Gardiner on sunday, and using girls at the front to fend off police was a pretty pussy move, but if I was in my friend's shoes....I would be right up there with them.

And whats with the name calling? Smelly? Wow, how mature Never read so much hate on an ethnic community on a TORONTO board. Its sad...it really is that people had to resort to a whole new low for insulting those they're pissed off at.

Anyways, thats my rant
