Things might get interesting for the Libs, if they can shake Charest out of Quebec

Posted by Yohan on May-03-2011 15:01:

in a way, this result may be bad for NDP in the long term. NDP will now be expected to deliver for Quebec, but with a Cons majority and Harper, who found out that Quebec just don't give a shit about Harper (but may be more receptive to centre right msg), it will be hard for Layton to fight for anyone really, especially Quebec.

so if Layton is seen as not doing enough for Quebec, NDP will lose all their gains in next election. should be interesting to see just how much of lasting grassroot influence NDP will have on federal politics will remain to be seen

the Liberals better vote for a centre right leader next time. I think a lot of centre right Libs got fed up with Dion's centre left tinkering and Iggy's... well, did anyone really know where Iggy stood? and they voted for the Cons.

Having Bob Rae (and his epic fail legacy in Ontario) as leader will be the worst thing the Libs can do, because centre right Libs don't want another centre left Libs leader. plus Bob Rae is tainted from his NDP past. if the Libs want their centre right voters back again, they need to elect a new leader who is clearly centre right, and has enough charisma to take back centre left from Layton. frankly, I don't see a dude in Libs rank who can do this. Justin Trudeau is not ready and will be eating alive.

BQ took a heavy beating, but they will come back. esp since I don't think NDP can deliver much for Quebec and they will be disillusioned by another federalist party who failed to really deliver. (best thing for separatism in Quebec?)

the Greens are here to stay... pending on how May does at the Commons. she'll try to make as much noise as possible, but I get a feeling that she's about relevant as Olivia Chow and about same amount of annoying. it's a signal to others that fringe parties can get elected, so hopefully we'll see the Rhino Party get elected soon.

Harper played a shrewd game and he won. I don't know whether he knew Iggy would implode like this, and I'm certain he didn't see Bloc collapsing like this, but he is one smart politico, despite all the tarring he got (and he dished out in return), he still managed to convince the general public that the Cons will give them a lot of cash... well, we'll see.

should be interesting next 4 years, but I hope Harper remembers that he is on notice and doesn't do anything stupid. because come next general election, the canadian public will have their say again

but I don't think Harper will do anything too drastic to appease his right wing members. after all, he delivered a majority and who else are they going to turn to? Preston Manning? lol

didn't canada had a referendum on proportional representation system like last election? or was it the one before?

Posted by nacarter on May-03-2011 15:15:

The good news is that policy (good or bad) is now on Harper's shoulders alone. He can't hide behind the opposition watering down his bills in a minority situation. He'll either sink or swim.

Frankly, the Libs need to start talking merger with the NDP. With the exception of Dryden's riding, every Con win in the 416 was due to vote splitting between the Libs and NDP. How long does the left really want to be out in the political wilderness.

The one thing that the opposition parties need to work on between now and the next federal election is targetting the message. You can't just yell the same phrase over and over again and hope people get it. The Cons are the masters of the targetted message:

Seniors: They're afraid of EVERYTHING. Don't think for a second that the Law & Order platform was aimed at 30-something professionals. Seniors drink this Kool-Aid everytime, and the opposition had no cohesive response.

The 905: We're talking about people who are lifestyle oriented. They want low corporate taxes because that's good for their stock portfolios, they don't want environmental policies because they like their SUVs, and who cares about social policy - how many homeless people live in Mississauga or Oakville?

Rural: Socially conservative to begin with and excessively pissed about the gun registry.

That translates into a majority

Last one, if memory serves.

Speaking of:

http://www.fairvote.ca/en/Canadians...y-voting-system

Canadians cheated again by voting system says Fair Vote Canada

Canadas national citizens movement for voting reform has released analysis of Tuesdays federal election results showing that the outcome does not accurately reflect the way Canadians voted.

The Conservative party increased their vote percentage by less than two points, says Fair Vote Canada (FVC) President Bronwen Bruch, but this allowed them to win 24 more seats than in 2008, when they were already over-represented. Stephen Harper calls this a decisive endorsement, but we call it a rip-off.

At the time of writing, these were the actual seats won and leading for each party:

CON 167, NDP 102, LIB 34, BQ 4, GREEN 1

If the seats were won in proportion to the votes that were cast, the numbers would look like this:

CON 122, NDP 95, LIB 59, BQ 19, GREEN 13

According to these results, the Conservatives have won 54.22% of the seats with only 39.62% of the votes, one of the least legitimate majorities in Canadian history.

This is a classic phony majority, said Bruch, and leaves us with a government that is completely unaccountable to Parliament. As long as they maintain rigid party discipline, nothing bad can happen to them for four years.

The FVC analysis shows that the NDP, historically under-represented by Canadas winner-take-all voting system, is now over-represented by seven seats, thanks to the orange wave that vaulted them into second place.

The Liberal Party, on the other hand, traditionally over-represented to the degree that they were regarded as Canadas natural governing party, is now the chief victim of the voting system. While their vote percentage fell by less than 8%, they lost more than half their seats.

The Bloc Qubcois, which has always previously been over-represented because their votes are concentrated in one region, has been decimated. Although their vote percentage has collapsed, they should still be entitled to 19 seats, but they are winning or leading in only four seats.

The Green Party is ecstatic to have finally won a single seat, but they actually received enough votes across the country to win 13 seats.

Across the country, added Fair Vote Canada Executive Director Wayne Smith, vote splits between the Liberals and NDP allowed the Conservatives to steal seats. Once again, our antiquated voting system has given us the wrong government, a government that most of us voted against.

It is truly time to change our voting system. If we want politics to be different, we need a vote that makes a difference.

I think Canadians are sick and tired of electing in clowns, every 2 years.

Anyways, I dunno how I feel about a Conservative Majority. On the one hand, they're the best option out of the 3, but at the same time they have some really stupid ideas they're trying to push through.

If Canadians were sick and tired of electing clowns then you'd think they would go out and vote to make sure someone gets elected. This election was better but I honestly feel anything less then 75% is just disrespectful.

Overall, I don't mind the conservative platform. In reality, with the type of job I do, my income level and my lifestyle the conservative party is who I should vote for. I've said all along that its not the conservative platform I have issue with its harper and the fact that i just don't trust him. I believe he has his own agenda and now given the opportunity he will set his agenda into place, regardless of what the party wants. I hope I'm wrong about him.

To the Conservatives, go ahead enjoy your little celebrations. Lets talk in a about 2 years from now when we have spent billions on military and other bullshit that Harper feels that is necessary and when our deficit going to the roof. It is a sad day here in Canada.

Perhaps. However, the lack of transparency of the Con govt and the Harper way of doing things goes against the grain of what 'Canada' is. Why can't we find a fiscally responsible party/leader who is not a fucktard? Don't even get me started on the whole 'jets' situation...if the Liberals pulled that stunt Harper would be going apeshit.

One recent example, changing letterheads to 'Harper Government' from 'Government of Canada' doesn't raise any red flags?

Apart from the G8 Summit, proroguing parliament twice, being held in contempt, rising gas prices, ridiculous transportation system, and dated health care system.... bah this list could be endless

Another dismal 4 years ahead of us.

there has to be a balanced. I hate the proportional representation system because it'll be full of party lackeys. at least in current system, the local MPs are suppose to represent local interests. yeah i know this doesn't quite work this way, but most of the time when I mail my MP, I get some sort of response.

Personally, I don't have a problem with party lackeys filling the government since any party member is a lackey now. The local MP doesn't work simply because in 99.999999% of the cases they have to vote along party lines. The system would work if MPs were not forced to follow party lines.

I don't like the proportional representation system simply because it lends itself to a minority government. The government needs to govern which seems too difficult to accomplish in a minority situation.

1984-1993... 1993 if I remember correctly thats when Chretien gained power. So I used 1984 as the start date and not the 1993.

Anyways to the people who are bitching that the system is flawed, try and change it. If you want a true majority government, I guess we need to change it to must having 185 seats and not 155.

but we had the majority until 93... i see what u did there now. U were counting the time from the beginning of the mandate, not the end.

1988 was the last time canadians elected a majority conservative house of commons.

I hope now with a majority harper goes back to his roots and balances the budget, lowers taxes, and reduces bureaucracy. If he turns into another red tory mulroney ill really be pissed off LOL

Harper will do his part in changing the system by taking away funding for the other parties...just wait and see

Posted by nacarter on May-04-2011 02:00:

I love how the loony segments of the left are clammering for electoral reform - they just don't pay attention. Proportional Representation in almost any form is going to lead to an endless string of minority governments. I work here in Ottawa, and I can tell you that the federal government officially accomplished DICK ALL in the last five years. This puts most of the policy making in the hands of unelected senior level bureaucrats which is WORSE than even the Harper Tories.

You want your ideas represented in government? It's time to start lobbying the leadership of the NDP, Liberals and Greens to start talking merger. Make the next election a direct comparison of ideas and not repeated splitting of the same hair.

I remember how furious you were when all the shit was happening at the G20 and you were talking about our rights and our Democracy being violated yet you support the Conservatives with open arms. Do you really believe that Harpers gives a shit about our civil rights or our Democracy for that matter? Do you like to live in a Police state?

Oh for god sake.

Harper is a conservative not a fascist.

That would be like saying the Liberals are Marxist.

You must be a truther. Only explanation for your bull shit.
