obviously, danny you should shut up.

telling "terrorist" to an italian is not the same as telling it to an "arab".

the irony about it all is he acted like a terrorist would, which was completely unecessary, yet most of you are trying to justify what he did as reasonable.

And Matterazzi's response is just pathetic... he doesn't know what terrorism is, please.

I know there's a code of honor between players and what is said on the pitch stays on the pitch... but after seeing what happened, someone should step in and clear all this mess.

+1 most intelligent post in this thread

This entire debacle involving racism doesnt suprise me especially coming from the Italian team. Same goes with Spain.
Bunch of idiots.

Not really, zidanes lost his cool in several circumstances before at juventus he was sent of atleast twice from what i remember for kicking and headbutting the opponent but none proved to be as costly as what he did yesterday and there is absolutely no justification for that.

Even if materazzi did insult his heritage, zidane seemed to forget 15 years of professional experience by headbutting him because he put himself above his team. He should have knocked materazzi out after the final whistle. Atleast then he would have only fucked himself over by getting a fine rather than his team and country since he lost nothing with the headbutt because hes retiring so the suspension isnt really going to hurt his cause.

Im sorry Mr. Zidane, thank you for the 15 years of your genius but in the end you leave the beautiful game with your head down.

last nights game is incomparable to any other game thugh..last match of your life and its the world cup final...id say it would take something very very severe/serious to make even zidane with his -as you point out- track record.

it was just a spur of the moment thing he did, so i doubt he wouldve waited till afterwards, plus he would be more likely to be charged by the police afterwards.

its hard for everyone in football to take because he has been admired by so many..(for example they had leonardo doing some commentary on the bbc and he was clearly upset by what had happened, depite being very much behind italy for the win)..but i respect him for standing up for something bigger than football. i think im right in saying that everyone of the french team that has spoken about it said zidane left the game with his head held high. i dont know how influential zidane's sending off was to the final outcome anyway to be honest.

I think FIFA must consider talk bout the incident with Zidane and asshole Materazzi, hearing explanations from the both two, and sanctioning both players, revisiting their trayectory, specially this video from the imbecile italian:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpG4AHlZrL4

And for Zizou: GOD BLESS YOU! this fault would't soil your magic!! You are part of a select group, "The Football Giants"

1+! one of the greatest players to bless the game.

Probably not as much as people are making it out to be. But sadly, you have to find a scapegoat or an excuse to justify every defeat. Domenech himself said that france would have won if zidane hadn't been sent of which was a silly thing to say about your greatest asset.

The only way france could have been affected was that he was their greatest penalty taker and with him around, the order of kicks could have been different. Not that it would have mattered since italy would have kicked their ass ne way

Maybe Blatter will actually do something about this and suspend Materazzi IF this turns out to be true. We'll see.

Indeed - no way ignorant Arabophobia should be allowed.

As for that article in which Materazzi claims he doesn't know what "terrorist" means (when "terrore" is not an unusal word in Italian, and Berlusconi being fond of fighting "terroriste")... it's hard not to consider that an affirmative answer to all rumours.

Posted by Deejiuana on Jul-11-2006 02:17:

sigh.

"calling an arab a terrorist is not racism"

you see, i would actually believe you if YOU (whoever said this) said exactly what materazzi said "i am an ignorant, i don't know what a terrorist is".

how stupid can you get?

and to whoever else said: I can make you cry with my comments and bla bla bla....wow, you can get racist while playin soccer - great job....seriously 10/10 - but u're missing the point: you're playing soccer, not verbally fighting with players.

Let's settle this whole Zidane thing down

It's a poll. If possible, please merge this into the main thread, so we can have all the discussion in one place.

Thanks, Taha

Posted by SouthernDJ on Jul-11-2006 02:52:

I've always respected your posts and thoughts but now you're posting shit imo, does this poll has any sense now?

my cousin said at the time that trezeguet is a good penalty taker, so he would be one of the ones up to take one anyway..so i dont think it wouldve changed things..maybe someone like sagnol would not have taken one, but then he scored..all ifs and buts isnt it, but i think italy were quite happy to go to penalties and would have just absorbed the french offense for the last the 9 minutes. the sad thing is not that france lost but the way zidane ended his career.

I was just curious about how many people actually supported Zidane: That other thread is full of contrary opinions, so I thought it would be interesting to actually "visualise" the situation, rather than having a somewhat confusing flow of retorts and counter-retorts.

It's a very interesting situation, I believe, because we have a demonstration of physical violence caused by what seems to have been a blatantly obvious case of Arabophobia, which has been in vogue in the news lately: is the majority supporting the provoked violence, or is the majority saying minorities should have a passive attitude? That's what I'd like to see. This is France and Italy we're talking about - the events in France last year were quite harsh, and racism in Italian football has become stronger during the last couple of years, from what I've read.

Actually, I wanted to post it in that other thread but, unfortunately, you can not post a poll in a thread that doesn't belong to you (nor after the 1st post).

Posted by RapidFire on Jul-11-2006 03:27:

Im neutral on it. yes it was a grave mistake on his part and it may very well have caused france the cup BUT at the same time I can understand it from his point of view. and to be honest it doesn't change what I think of him. he'll always be my favourite player, headbutt or no headbutt.

that was me and dont give me that beautiful game shit if your in a match like that your going to want to fuck with someones head to get them off their game. You obviously havent been in anything competitive. Ive said shit to people that I have said racist shit to opponents not because I am racist but it was a good way to make them loose their cool. And guess what they give it right back to you.

Just because you cheat in a game, don't expect others to do the same: a game is to be won within the rules. If you have to distract your opponent by taunting them in order to increase your chances of victory, you shouldn't be playing in the first place.
