Just to play devil's advocate...yes the horse is the one who physically jumps the obstacle but its the power the rider generates that makes the horse generate power so the horse can jump the obstacle.

Usain Bolt is going to destroy that cocksucker Michael Johnson's world record of 19.32 seconds in the 200 meters tomorrow.

So excited. It is amazing to see people perform at this level.

Orko, what other sports shouldn't be in the Olympics? I am assuming you also don't like pistol shooting and air rifling?

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Aug-19-2008 20:37:

Predicting Orko's reply: Pistols all fire the same; if all horses jumped the same, then the two could be compared.

Posted by Orko on Aug-19-2008 20:42:

Shit disturbers. Well based on my definition, probably sailing, since the wind provides the power, and the sailors harness the wind to move forward. Rowing and such is ok, because the human powers the boat.

As for the shooting events, I'm not sure. Archery is damn cool, and the human creates the tension in the bow to fire the arrow. The other shooting events, probably not, but I just have not thought about it too much.

I only brought up equestrian, because it was the one I felt strongest about.

are there any other events in the olympics where a person uses an animal as the equiptment?

Posted by Orko on Aug-19-2008 20:46:

Not according to the Olympic site:

edit: way too slow

They had water motorsports once .

Posted by smuncky on Aug-19-2008 20:51:

it would be cool if there would be an aqua version of horseback. but instead of horses, there would be dolphins. and the rider would control the dolphin while going through an obstacle course.

Bobsleigh should be removed, really - you just throw yourself into a hunk of metal and go down a hill. Yeash, they even put walls up to guide you and everything!

The world already has the iditarod, the Olympics could not compete. Maybe the hardest race in the world?

but without the power of the pusher at the start, the sleigh would go nowhere.

lol, just messing around. i actually see where you are coming from and partially agree.

another interesting observation...the US have 5 people who won 4 or more medals at these games for a total of 27 medals (13 gold, 8 silver, 6 bronze).

While I do agree that at some point a line needs to be drawn. As say, I dont think a dog-show should be part of the Olympics, even though there is also a human element to it as the dog is trained by a person.

But, I do think with horse riding that there is enough human skill / physical nature involved to have it be justified for being in the Olympics.

I would like to see that but I don't think it would work simply because of the healing time required between fights.

Although I do agree that population is a factor when determining the number of potential good athletes you have, I don't think that is the measuring tool that needs to be used when comparing how well one country is doing against another. I would suggest a better comparison would be number of events competed in per medal. I don't have the numbers but I think that will give you a better comparison for how good a country is doing.
