My mothers brother committed suicide. She was in her junior year of college, he was in grad school.
She continued in classes for a while, but after going to Egypt for 2 months she came back and had a mental break down. She attributed it culture shock, but really she said later it was not dealing with her brothers death.
My grandfather slipped into a deep depression that he never got out of. He lived for another 35 years wondering if he could have done anything to save his son or treated him better or whatever goes through a parents head.
My grandmother... who knows what happned to her, she is so selfish anyways... who knows.
My other aunts as well, totally devastated. |
Maybe your uncle should have wrote a better note...your family might have understood better. The problem is that you're taking the one experience that your family had and broadly saying that's how it is for everyone. People aren't the same, families aren't the same, life isn't the same for everyone. One day, if you're lucky, you might understand this basic concept.
Anyhow, I'm out...it's late on the east coast for a work night.

Welp, it's painfully obvious that this is a personal issue for you and you think that the same exact result applies in every scenario. Well done, CD.

Well done, you've successfully averted the topic at hand.

Really struck a nerve, didn't I? As previously mentioned, I've had multiple conversations about it with my mom while she was at that very threshold, so I would fully understand.

Woa, love? Really? We haven't even had our first day yet. Kind of creepy... I think we're going to have to just be friends. Sorry. You're really nice, though..
I'm not sure why, but most people tend to think I am. Not that I'll complain

Why? Honestly, if anyone close to me killed themselves the only thing I'd feel sad for is knowing that they were in that much pain. I'd find peace in knowing that they did too.
When my buddy shot himself it was the same thing. It was shocking, but when I thought about his life and all the shit he was going though, it was sad as hell to think about him suffering to that extent. I used to have conversations with him all the time about medication, etc. He was really torn up about getting treatment.

Lets see how it is after the fact though. I bet your father would feel the same as you? I mean the women he loves, the mother of his children killing herself. Thats gotta strike a blow someplace.
If thats not the case then you people all must be far more cold and apathetic than I like to think that myself is.

So like I read in psychology today about this thing, let me grab my notes... It's called "availability heuristics". Basically because you have an event in your mind that sticks out so much (your uncle's suicide) you think that all such events (suicides) will be the same situation. But the truth is that they aren't all the same. Every situation is different.
The more you know!
Fuck I'm supposed to be sticking out of this thread except to eat popcorn and make homosexual innuendo.

My brother was actually suicidal at one point. I never really understood it, but he's always been a little fragile.
Naturally, when he came to live with me I fixed the problem almost instantaneously. He is no longer a slave to the idea of happiness.

People can be hurt and still find it in their heats to understand why someone would make that choice. Which is far more emotionally mature than you act towards it.

You know somebody has a warped view of this issue when they compare suicide to the innocent killing of civilians during war.

I'd love to know Nou's thoughts on the concept of forgiveness. Actually no I don't, lol.
Posted by Joss Weatherby on Apr-06-2010 07:07:
You guys are arguing not only against me but hundreds, thousands probably, of different studies that show that suicide has a negative impact on families and social structures.
To deny this is to deny the very fabric of western society.

If you are talking about forgiving dead people than thats BS. They are dead. Your forgiveness means nothing to anyone lol.
People dying cease to exist in any realm. They are not in heaven, they are not in hell, they arent ghosts or reincarnated or some other fantasy land bullshit. They simply cease to exist.
