kind of a good thing that BP makes "obscene profits" eh? now they can pay for the damages without going bankrupt and leaving taxpayers on the hook.

i would still recomend shorting htem. when the bbl total leakage comes out and they are paying 4300 per barrel in damages and penalties, lets see how much of their revenue is eaten up.

This spill is going to make ixtoc look like a cakewalk. I hope we see 100 dollars per bbl by end of summer.

I said like a few days afterward I should have shorted it, and I definitely should have

Just part of me isn't too keen on the idea of shorting something just because you never know what could happen and I feel like I missed the opportunity when I had it.

Why? I want our dependency on oil to diminish as much as possible too, but this would just hurt EVERYONE. Small business owners, the average citizen, etc.

no, actually it suggests that the cost for a barrel of oil is something we take for granted and shouldn't put our planet in perril just to have cheap gas. The simple rules of supply and demand. The viable supply of oil demands that gas is more expensive. This will encourage people to use public transit more, carpool etc. You're response to me suggests that you don't think that crude oil is a luxury when in fact it is. This as well as wallmart and the burkenstocks you wear.

I wonder if this 20 billion compramises the taxes BP would pay to the Federal Government anyway?

obviously they would pay less taxes if they earn less income end of year. It all depends on how they ammortize this fund.

I wear neither Wal*Mart nor Birkenstocks. If appropriate measures had been taken to manage the impact, I might agree with you, but you're merely justifying your position out of expediency and not out of any altruistic intention.

I haven't really been following what has been going on with this for the most part. Would someone please let me know what Obama said about it? Is the gov't paying anything to fix this or is BP going to be held responsible?

If I had the money to do so, I would be out there helping clean those poor aniamls and fish.

It was ridiculous. They start off detailing all of the information they have, then say that Hayward's been given questions in advance. Every single answer he gave was either PR pablum or it was strictly plausible deniability. He never once answered any question, but either the most basic or to which an answer was already obvious. Waxman kept leaning into him, too, saying, "Didn't you promise to focus like a laser on safety issues?"

He was like a prize fighter focusing on Hayward's "Laser" quote like it was a cut above his eye. Of course the guy sat there like a teenager who'd just been caught steeling on video camera but is too stupid to realize that they already had all the evidence to crucify him in the eyes of the public. I don't think I've seen such a passive-aggressive display, in quite a long time.
