The17sss and Shaw, this really isn't the place for your arguing. You're not even arguing about anything at all to do with the situation in Japan anymore, and it's just turned into a political debate, which most certainly does not belong here.

srussell0018, this isn't the place for you to be notifying The17sss and shaw about their unwelcome comments. You're not even arguing about anything at all to do with the situation in Japan anymore, and it's just turned into a personal debate, which most certainly does not belong here.

Halcyon+on+on, this isn't the place for you to be correcting me regarding my comment to The17sss and shaw about their unwelcome comments. You're not even arguing about anything at all to do with the situation in Japan anymore, and it's just turned into a hypothetical debate, which most certainly does not belong here.

You're right, but their argument has turned into a liberal vs. conservative rant and argument over whether Larry Kudlow is an idiot or not. The argument isn't going to go anywhere, and is completely irrelevant to this thread, so either make a new thread debating whether or not Larry Kudlow is an idiot, or just do it somewhere else, because this thread is actually useful in its original purpose, but is being de-railed by an argument I'm sure the two of them have had numerous times already.

They're talking about economics in general at this point, not anything to do with Japan.

I agree, but it's also not the place for politics with which we don't agree to be passed off as unquestionable truth. If you read the thread, you'll realize we're only responding to other comments. I'm fine with dropping it, so long as there isn't anything else to respond to.

I'm not questioning that. It's the evolution of your arguing that has taken a turn for the ad-nauseating

Posted by shaw on Mar-14-2011 18:39:

That would be attributable to the replies from Lews, Nou, and NRG. Or did you just skip that part?

Edit: nvm. 'evolution' means 'derailing the repetition train of beliefs I share.' yeah, my bad. I didn't mean to be a party popper.

To the post showing the order in Japanese society, its amazing.

Even not in a disaster, the order was intense when I was over there.

When in line at immigrations, there must have been 500-600 people waiting in line and the room was dead silent, not screaming idiots, just quiet talking.

The biggest thing I noticed was the escalators at train stations. If you were intending to stand on the escalator you made sure you were all single file on the right side of the escalator and you allowed the left side to be open for anyone that needed to move up them faster, it was amazing how well this worked. Every station I was at this was just practice, and I didn't even see any signs saying this is what you do, it was just done.

I think that's as much a byproduct of congested living environments as it is of culture. I notice the same thing in NYC vs. the rest of the country--people just adapt. Even compared to Chicago, the organization is vastly superior. There's just no way to function with that level of traffic if people don't start following the rules; if 3 people are on a 'moving sidewalk,' it doesn't matter where they stand. With 300, they HAVE to get in line.

I'd say there's a 'chicken vs. egg' debate, but the society, as a whole, had adopted that nature long before such dense population of metropolitan areas.

There is something to be said about nearly homogeneous societies.

It's crazy to see people trying to run away on their cars and get caught up. Kinda saw that on thsi and other footages.

Posted by The17sss on Mar-14-2011 20:49:

2 of the craziest videos I've seen so far. holy shit. I can't embed them though. First one is under 2 minutes.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12725646

Now this one... WOW. 6 minutes but worth the watch as it shows a town go from dry to utterly destroyed in stages. It starts off looking like some harmless rainwater spilling down a normal city street. By the 2nd minute cars are floating. By minute 3, it's like a class 5 rapids 10 feet high... and by minute 5, entire buildings have been dislodged and are being carried away!

If you want to see the consequences of buildings and neighborhoods being washed away, check this out. Just drag the slider back and forth on each pic. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4205226..._science-space/

Doesn't have to be homogenous to convince people to move in an orderly fashion when beneficial. Like I said, NYC is a perfect example.

Yes, Tokyo, especially, is still on another level. Due to environment or society? I don't know. It's still interesting. Inb4thatoneintersection

Not to pull too much of a "parachute from planes," but isn't there some way to prevent against such enormous devastation from tsunamis? Giant robot walls would be awesome (it is Japan), but are there any practical solutions? Examples?

George Bush does not care about Asian people.

lol i think this is the 3rd or 4th time this video is posted in this thread. absolutely mental though. midway through it you think it can't get any worse but it just doesn't stop. mind-boggling

A network of underground tunnels to channel the excess water into?

Posted by jester on Mar-14-2011 21:47:

Groundzero

Use this mapplet to see what a nuclear disaster would look like for Fukushima nuclear plant, 3 reactors go. All 3 reactors combine put out like a 2 GW, not sure how that would equal in tons.

I checked out a 50 Mt nuke and it doesn't look so good for anyone within 40 km of the plant, best bet people better be 100 km away if this thing decides to really go KABOOM.
