Just a little random update: Xone filters + EFX 500 = Win...

I feel unbelievably reinvigorated about mixing right now...

I've tried mixing all week but my lingering flu means I have bad hearing in one ear... = trainwreck and tired = cant mix for shit.

Yeah, that's kinda how I was last week, but today.... OMGZ0RZ!

BTW, you still gotta get back to me on that track from your latest mix... I'm pretty sure it's the one right after Baggage handlers - Vaportral (Chris Micali's You Win mix), that was pure sickness...

As far as using EFX in the mix itself, I usually will just either use the filters on the Xone, or the only other thing I've tried so far is using a delay or echo effect on the low band and trying to create my own builds in the mix. I'm by no means even CLOSE to great on this thing yet, but I'm loving it already, and just real excited to start working in EFX more and more in my live sets.

You know, I never even thought of just effecting my master. The problem there is that I layer a capellas and stuff over my sets, so I dunno.

The 92 does, but the 62 doesn't. It's the only downside to the 62.

k now after realizing ti was a special order and guitar center doesent accept returns on special order..im stuck with it..but now after fuckin with it while mixing..im starting to like this thing..really cool haha..i just didnt give it a chance and i wanted more money for my montreal trip.oh well..stuck with this fine piece of gear haha..i love fuckin with echo while mixin out then adding some wah or jet to it..sickk effect..also cool how it can loop the echo for ever when u make the depth all way up..djm 500 never had that..gotta find some scratch/zabiela type samples to fuck with this thingg

Glad to hear you had some more time with it... I just can't get enough of playing around with this thing...

And no, the 62 has no Send/Return, which is definitely a major bummer, but in the end, I guess I've basically already made up my mind to save up for one more and run 2 channels like this:

CDJ ---> EFX 500 (Maybe 1000 for the next one???) ---> Mixer

Just because I can already see areas where I'd like to rock 2 different effects on different bands over each track, if that even makes sense...

But yeah, in summation, getting this for Christmas this year already feels like it's opened up a bunch of new doors for my mixing... Jet/Wah + 3/4 Delay on the lows + HPF Filter can get you some insane energy in the middle of a mix...

I think it's really just dependent on whether or not you personally can "get" the hang of the EFX. I personally love the thing, but know just as many guys like you who think it's an absolute abomination. Personally, I think the EFX sound about a million times better than they do on the DJM500 (I rocked this mixer for 2 years before I got my Xone 62), and I'm confused as to how anyone thinks the EFX on a DJM 500 are easier to control or better sounding than this, but again, to each their own. I personally am already in love with this EFX unit, and I'm already considering buying a second one (So I can run CDJ --> EFX --> Mixer on each channel).

Right now I'm just running the EFX out of the Master out on the Xone 62, so I'm just effecting whatever is playing out of the master. I haven't tried to hook it up using the Auxillary out and running it back through a channel simply because I don't really understand how that's really supposed to work, but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. dude you are compromising the fidelity of your system if you are running it through the efx. Plus you have it on even when you are not using it. Here's how I got it set up:

AUX OUT OR BOOTH OUT To efx in using 1/4 (from mixer) to 1/4 cables(efx)
and 1/4 (efx) to rca cable (mixer line in) on one of the 4 channels that are routed to the crossfader.

So you have your three cdj on three of the channels and your efx on the forth one
When you are ready to effect the sound pick the curve without the dip.
And assign your crossfader to x and have your crossfader all the way to the left so you
don't get a drop in volume

efx is at y

crossfade to y as fast as you like.
now the aux out or booth of you mixer is being fed to y.
This is cool because you can alternate between the original and th effected sound using the crossfader insted of the knob (you can still use the knob if you like)

The efx has an eq that kills completely certain freq/s
so you can get intresting rhythmic eq changes by crossfading to the sound with no
bass or with boosted tremble. (always tend to cut more than boost)
I do this a lot.
I am surprised the didn't include this feature at their updated version.

Hope this helps excuse my shitty spelling.
congrats on your gear

tip : I dont hit the yellow I go at green (o db) on the channels so that there is enough
headroom for the efx to peak without hitting red ( xone has more headroom than efx)

Posted by lücid on Dec-28-2005 05:49:

I'll give that a shot tomorrow, thanks m8...

Edit: Shit, again, DJ RJT posting as lucid... my bad.

Posted by Trogdor on Dec-28-2005 09:56:

Use the Aux out, so you can use the Aux knobs to effect any channel, not necessarily the live one. If you don't want to use the crossfader to control the effects, you could always go into channel 1 or 2 (the return channels), and keep your 1/4" to 1/4" cables. Aux Out to Input 1 (or 2) generally serves as the 62's Send/Return.

I have to say that Harriz' use of the crossfader is a pretty cool idea, as I like to use the crossfader to control the filters on my 92.

Posted by harriz on Dec-28-2005 12:43:

I like using the faders as I play techno & tech house, but I only play techno & tech house in my bedroom ''out there'' I play underground hip hop at partys
( :lol I like to use the word underground I mix commercial shit in too (sorry guys, got to keep the girls dancing!! Girls dance -> Party happens -> I get more gig's!!! -> getting gigs -> good!!!!!!!!)
I also use the cheap treak harmonic mixing thing to make up for my mediocre
hip-hop programming ( hey.. shit at least I am honest!)
fs2 at the decks ->tractor 3.0 looping the intro -> reedit of the mix with efx ( usually the opposite of what zabiela does ,or better put what zabiela does but backwards
boom bassline ''magically" kicks in,a key higher, macking up for the fact that I am actually playing alicia keys & 50 cent ( I suck i know! ) everybody's like ''WOW this guy is good'' And no, in case you are wondering I wasn't born with a ''strange sence of melody , dom philiphs (OF THE GU FAME) is EMBARACENGLY full of shit with those liner notes that ruin what would have been descent prog compilations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! )

so yeah... use of the crossfader comes natural (because of practice) to me.
Unless you will be mixing 4 line level channels at once (and.. no c-loops doesn't count!)
I would keep the efx routed to the crossfader for quick rhythmic eq & fx changes of the signal)

(Again excuse my shitty spelling as I am foreign!!!!!!! )
english -> second language for me

I just ordered a Korg KP2, I was planning on getting a efx, but I need a record box aswell, so I just decided on the spur of the moment to get the KP2 instead and a record box, save a little cash so I can upgrade my mixer.

I hope I didn't make a mistake with the KP2 instead of a efx.

Btw can the efx record samples? and if it can how long?

Posted by Lassy on Dec-28-2005 15:28:

Pictures?

Posted by Gunyouken on Dec-28-2005 15:49:

I only ordered it today, it will be here next week only.
I was just wondering if it was a bad idea or not, compared to getting a efx.

No. But you can create infinite loops with the Echo effect.

By doing a Feedback Loop (infinite echo), you can "sample" up to four beats of a tune.

I switched to it from a DXM-06 and it was such a change on almost every aspect, I hated the 5000fx initially; so much that I switched back to the DXM-06 for a little bit! After a while I stopped being foolish and gave it another try. Once I finally gave myself time to adjust to it, I fell in love with it.

Nice setup backwards energY... Though I was expecting an homage to Chuck Norris somewhere in there...

I'm still pulling for you to win the whore off BTW...

Thank you, Mr. Turner!

The homage to Chuck is on my face....for one more day, at least.
