We wanted to keep Woodgate - Shepherd
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has dismissed claims that he offered defender Jonathan Woodgate to Real Madrid 'on a plate'.
The 24-year-old has joined the Spanish giants for 13.4m after passing a medical on Friday morning.
But Shepherd insists the initial approach came from Real, adding they are the only club for which Woodgate would have signed.
"Real Madrid called us on Monday with an offer for Jonathan, and since then the transfer has followed the normal course of any deal,'' Shepherd told his club's website.
"The first we knew of any interest was when Madrid's representative called us on Monday. To suggest otherwise is complete rubbish, and it's certainly not about the money.
"We did not want Jonathan to leave Newcastle United, but you have to look at it from both sides. Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world - that's a fact.
"Which player wouldn't want to sign for Real Madrid if they come and show an interest in them?
"Jonathan has said that Real Madrid would have been the only club he'd have left Newcastle United for - he certainly wouldn't have joined another Premiership club."

Well that means what to us?
guys guys guys! i suppose u know how it feels to lose one of ure best players (if he is that) to Madrid now! but face it u havent done that bad in comparison with us. i know theyre different players but woody can be easily replaced and the team didnt do that much better with him last year cos he was injured so much. even if u dont get a good replacement before early sept, which im sure u will then its not the end of the world cos u still got other centre backs who have filled in for woodgate in the past and kept clean sheets. plus u got 4 mil more than we did for owen who ok is worth 3 times that if he hadnt been towards the end of his contract, but 4 mil is 4 mil. u can buy most defenders in the world with 14million who face it will play week in week out.. ok when hes fit hes a good player, but i wouldnt say hes anything more than that. hes worth the 13.4m but no more. ok hes a solid player and has a lot of influence on the defence, but so are players like kenny cuningham, southgate, ledley king and carragher, and they aint worth more than 10mil. no big loss.. done right to take the money
You can't put Woodgate in the same category as Cunningham, Carragher or King, he is much better than that. He has major injury problems but in terms of ability when fit there is no comparison.
When he's fit, Woodgate is one of the best centre backs in the world, and I don't care if that sounds biased because he is absolutely amazing. Under Real Madrid he has the potential to become the best IMO.
Time will tell if we have made a sensible move or a major blunder. I have a gutting feeling that Real Madrid are going to groom him into the world's best centre back and in a couple of year's we will be kicking ourselves over this. But equally, he might never get over his injury problems, as some players don't, and we could look back on a very shrewd decision to take the money and run.
We have a race against time to spend that money now, but I don't see any top class defenders we can go for, they've all been taken by the looks of it. Maybe Ledley King if we offered 10M, but they would be reluctant to lose him at the end of the transfer window, espescially to another Premiership side. We may be forced to save the majority of the cash until January or next summer and go for a young English talent in the next 10 days like Callum Davenport or Michael Dawson. One thing's for sure, we are unlikely to get a defender of Woodgate's quality ever again.
what im trying to say is that carragher cunningham and king are consistantly solid defenders like woodgate.
i see that Newcastle today have been linked with a 30M bid for Rooney and Freddy Shepard is trying to get the funds ready for xmas transfer window. Good replacement for Shearer..

Only the Sun have linked us to Rooney, so we can laugh that one off straight away. Great player, but we're after defenders.
Sky Sports have linked us with Rangers' new signing Boumsong.
Woodgate was on the news yesterday, he told Newcastle to keep the number 6 shirt for him in case he comes back some day. A token gesture but nice nevertheless.

The Real Madrid move came out of the blue, it's not like he was waiting for it. How many players would turn down Real Madrid when they come knocking? You can hardly blame him, and he's guaranteed to make the first team there when fit.

Woodgate seals dream move to boyhood heroes Madrid
Jonathan Woodgate claimed he had loved Real Madrid since his boyhood days and had sealed a "dream move" after being unveiled at the Bernabeu.
The England defender completed his 13.4m move to the Bernabeu from Newcastle on Friday and was introduced to the media on Saturday lunchtime.
"Mr President and all those who have Real Madrid in their hearts, this is my dream to come here,'' Woodgate said. "I have loved Real Madrid since I was young and I have always followed them.
"I am joining a team with special players now and in the past, such as Fernando Hierro and Raul.
"My ambition is to play here and win trophies. I hope to bring success to Real Madrid.''

Real Madrid now will probably play with Walter Samuel and Woodgate as the 2 centre backs. Rather sick, could possibly prove to be the best defence in the world if they bond, Carlos @ left back and who usually plays on the right?

Originally posted by Turner So youre telling me Real Madrid was the only club he would have moved to if the bid came in for him? He was waiting for a bigger club to come in for him, it was shite about him claiming that Real Madrid were the only club he would leave the toon for. If Barcelona or someone like Milan came in for him he would be gone like a shot. He's after 1 thing, money, just like most footballers.

Originally posted by evil_bastard I can't think of any player, other than a Geordie of course, who wouldn't leave Newcastle for Real Madrid. Basically the two clubs reached an agreement over Woodgate and he just had to accept it. It wasn't like the Owen deal, where Owen wouldn't sign a new contract forcing his club to sell him at a ripoff price or lose him for free. Woodgate didn't ask to leave, his contract ran until 2008 but noone could have predicted Real Madrid would suddenly come in at the end of August, I think it caught the whole footballing world by surprise to be honest.
The Chronicle say Bernard is close to extending his contract. Finally some good news
Newcastle lose to Tottenham @ St. James!
go Tottenham !!!!! i'm sure Naybet played a wonderful game
well that sums up a rather mint week
We should have been 3-0 up at half time but we wasted a hatful of chances. Atouba scored early in the second half and for most of the rest of the game Spurs just threw their backs to the wall. We should have had a penalty in the second half but the referee bottled it and decided on a free kick right on the line of the 18 yard box instead.
We were the better side but it's our own fault we didn't take our chances. For the second time in a week we have dominated the game but we only have a point to show for it. We need to bring in a quality centre back and get everybody fit.

WE WILL SPEND - SHEPHERD Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has sought to reassure the Magpies' fans that the money brought in by the sale of Jonathan Woodgate will be spent wisely. Shepherd has accepted full responsibility for the decision to offload Woodgate to Real Madrid for 13.5million, saying the offer was just "too good to turn down". And as the club's supporters await news of a replacement for the England centre-half, Shepherd told the Sunday Mirror: "Newcastle fans know that we have never been slow to spend our money at this club. "Our recent record shows we can be trusted to deliver quality players. I'm not going to say too much at this stage but I think the fans will be pleasantly surprised at what results from the Woodgate deal. "We didn't go into the Woodgate transfer without a long-term plan. All will be revealed soon." Shepherd also admitted that Woodgate's injury record played a part in his decision to accept Real's bid. "Jonathan is a great player but he's been dogged by injuries," added Shepherd. "He's been unlucky in that respect but, as someone once said, there's no point having a Rolls-Royce if it spends most of its time in the garage. "We hope Jonathan will get over his injury problems and go on to have a long and successful career with Real and England. But I won't pretend that his appearance record at Newcastle wasn't a factor in our decision to sell him. "He hadn't played for us since April and was going to be out for at least another month. When I weighed up the pros and cons it was obvious we had to accept the offer."
He wont buy until the transfer window opens in janauary or he will squander the money.
I can recall Newcastle were about to sign a French Winger he's about 18 from St Etienne, what ever happened to that?
