WOOOOOWWW! Hold on a minute Zild!!!!!
F#m IS F# MINOR NOT MAJOR, it would be just F# for a major!!!!
Similarly Fm is F minor!!!
99% of trance is in minor keys.

Posted by Camelot_Sound on Mar-10-2005 01:43:

I agree: 99% of trance is probably in minor keys, as is perhaps 95% of all dance music since the 1980s. Major keys are still popular in R&R and other pop music styles.

Also: Qualia's collaborative database on mixshare.com contains key information on the most tracks. Our subscription database only contains info on 50,000 tracks.

Ya i did check the website...really cool dude but there r many tracks over there that r posted with no keys. check it out dude =]
thnx again

Anyony care to explain what major/minor really is?

Right now I can only figure out wether it's a C,C#,D,D#, E etc... but I have no clue if it's in major or minor

Posted by qualia on Mar-11-2005 00:08:

X-scream, i'm working up a music theory tutorial on how to find a song's key, which will be available on mixshare.com soon. i'll post a url when i'm finished...

Posted by Krowster on Mar-11-2005 09:41:

Can anyone key this track for me?
Cinereal - Another Day (Original mix)
thnx

Posted by qualia on Mar-11-2005 10:12:

My bad, I always wrote it as Fmaj. I guess thats why they made me play the quads in middle school band. No big deal.

Common major and minor chords use the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of the scale
[...]
major - W+W, W+H
minor - W+H, W+W

Just wondering if you made a typo here. You say that major/minor chords use the 1st 3rd & 5th note of the scale. Shouldn't major chords be "W+W, H+W" ?

Anyway I've read through your tutorial, very interesting
So I gave it a shot, trying to figure out wether a track is major/minor:

Electric Universe - Morning Star (SAMPLE)

Tonic note: G

Major or minor?
Minor: Trying G+A#+D (Sounds good)
Major: Trying G+B+D

Conclusion:
Assuming the chords you mentioned in your tutorial are correct, it's a Gm !

Very helpful tutorial qualia

EDIT: I wrote a wrong major key!

Hi there...

It would be great if anyone could me help with these keys:

Rio Addicts - Crossroads (Original Mix) A#m(03A) or Gm(06A) ?
Perry O'Neil - Wave Force A#m(03A) or D#m(02A) ?
Ridgewalkers - Find (Andy Moor Mix) Dm(07A) ?
Starsign - Taurus (Original Mix) Am(08A) ?
Endre - I Kill for you (Probspot Rmx) Bm(10A) or Dm(07A) or Gm(06A) ?
Andrew Bennett - Ocean drive (Probspot Rmx) Dm(07A) or Em(09A) ?
Tilt - the world doesnt know Cm(05A) ?
Sonorous - Last Sunday (Positive Ways Mix) G#m(01A) or Am(08A) or Cm(05A)
Kuffdam - Summer Dream A#m(03A) ?
Enmass - Beyond Horizon Cm(05A) or A#m(06A) ?
Mirco de Govia Cm(05A) or Dm(07A)or Gm(06A) ?
Duende - Amor de dios D#m(02A) or A#m(03A) ?

if anyone has the correct keys or an idea for any of these it would be really great

X-scream, good point! when i was showing how to build major/minor chords i was simply trying to show the intervals between each note (without thinking how they match the scale notes), but by switching W+H to H+W it should be less confusing, which i just did ;-)

btw, i'll probably add an example of a major vs. minor chord in the tutorial

a G minor chord would be G-A#-D
a G major chord would actually be G-B-D

i think you're right in that it's Gm (now that i've gotten to my home speakers)

Rockabye,
I have listed the keys for those tunes you requested (the ones I have anyway!).

Rioaddicts - Crossroads Gm

Ridgewalkers - Find
This is difficult to say, sounds like Dm in intro and outro, but chords throughout are Dm-C-G, which should technically make it in C, so its either Dm or C, its up to you really! I treat it as Dm when mixing in and out, and you get the added bonus of the key change to C throughout.

Endre- I kill for you Dm

Tilt - The World Doesn't Know Gm

Which Mirco De Govia track is it? If it is Voller Sterne, then the Super 8 mix has a Cm intro and outro with a C major section from the first to the last breakdown.

Hope this helps mate. As I have said before I will key any tunes you like if you can get me a section of it to listen to.

Posted by Psionic on Mar-16-2005 04:11:

Classic tune: Science Dept - Repercussion (Funk Function's Future Mix)

Anyone want to tell me the key for this one?

Posted by Nikolas Vaughn on Mar-16-2005 06:30:

Find is a G minor...thats what i got anyways

Posted by Psionic on Mar-17-2005 12:20:

Oh, what about Matthew Dekay vs. Proluctors - Bad and What If?

Posted by Kev Boy on Mar-18-2005 16:19:

Hey Nikolas Vaughn,
The Andy Moor mix of Find is definitely NOT Gm, the other side however is Gm, whatever mix that is, can't remember

Hi everybody and hi Rockabye

Perry's wave force is A#m
Andy Moor's rmx for find is Dm
Endre is Dm
Tilt's world doesnt know is Gm
Kuffdam is A#m
Mirco's Voller stern (i guess,if its other like asarja or...) is Cm
and Duende's amor de dios is D#m

thats what i have from your list.

Hey,do somebody think that Solid globe's sahara is Eb or Dm?
The answer is no Eb ,no Dm ,its has been pitched,so its seats between Eb and Dm .

Anyway ,i heard that Indian music have 72 scales(roots) or more ,so what whould Dj Prince will say about that ?(i mean harmonical mixing)So if Solid globe's Sahara was pitched out of european scale, thats mean that you can create a new formulas for harmonical mixing?
Hmm ,sounds weird.

Hey everyone, i've come to the point that i can beatmatch with no problem at all, and mixing is basiclly becoming kinda boring, i wanna start learning how to use harmonic mixing, but my problem is that i dont know any notes/cords... so i cant really figure out which tune is in which key, i wanted to know if there was a fast way to learn how.. cause im thinking maybe i should get into producing a bit too.....

Posted by qualia on Mar-22-2005 02:07:

you can check out a tutorial at:

otherwise, check the links section (of [[ LINK REMOVED ]]

Mirco's Voller Sterne (super 8 mix) is Cm intro/outro, but the middle section of the song from 1st to last breakdown is C major

Yes, you damn right Kev Boy,middle section is major ,so you can count it as Cm or Cmajor ,cause looks like this track have two sides and both of them are too heavy for make a vote .

What about Active sight's the search for freedom(Cm)?,do some body notice ,that in the middle ,you have Fm ?,and Fm keeps until the end.So which that tune is Cm or Fm?

Nice to see so many that are interessed in harmonic mixing. As you might know I am hosting www.djprince.no. For the last years I have been really busy with my dayjob and my family(i have 3 kids) so the quality on my site has suffered. I try to update the key and database as often I can, but unfortunately there is not enough hours in a day.

I have receieved some batches of key and bpm info from many friends around the world, but the site needs more contributers. Although my site is dedicated to all types of music and it is a great source for remixers, mashup artists, producers and djs, I would like to expand my database with trance tunes. So if there are anyone here that what to contribute to my site you are most welcome.

I would also like to know if anybody has any experience with tONArt key detection software? This program only supports wav files, I have been in contact with them and they dont have any plans upgrading their demo software. BUT.... Alcatech, the producers behind BPM Studio are planning to use tONArt detection technolgy in a future release of BPM Studio. Maybe Mixmeister pro is finally getting some good competion.

Download tONArt

Kind regards
