I'll fight Beckham for Madrid place says Reyes

Sid Lowe in Madrid and Louise Taylor
Tuesday September 19, 2006
The Guardian

Jos Antonio Reyes said scoring on his home debut for Real Madrid in the 2-0 win over Real Sociedad was "one of the greatest moments of my career".

"I couldn't have asked for any more, I started and scored a goal," said the Spain forward on a one-year loan from Arsenal. "I'm delighted with my performance and with scoring in my first game for Real at the Bernabu.

"The coach told me he wanted me to play on the right. I think I did enough to keep my place and I won't give it up without a fight but Fabio Capello picks the team. I enjoyed it on the right and I'll gladly play there again, or anywhere else Capello asks me to play.

"It doesn't matter to me who I'm up against. I've come here and I'm determined to be an important player for Real. I want to stay here for as long as I can because this is my dream."

This may mean big problems for David Beckham, who gave way to Reyes for the first 73 minutes but replaced the Spaniard and scored a superb goal after a run from his own half to clinch Sunday's win.

Reyes, 23, is eight years younger than the former England captain and added: "Beckham is a great player, and everyone knows that. But I'm not afraid to fight anyone for my place. I can offer a lot to the team with my pace and my job is to get balls in to the strikers and get forward as fast as I can to support them."

Reyes, who moved on deadline day last month, was one of the few Real players to impress in a poor first-half display. He was replaced by Beckham shortly after his goal.

Looking forward to the game tonight between Real Betis and Real Madrid.

It should be a great one, because when these teams meet, they almost never fail to entertaing the people watching the game.

Betis has got a major loss in Rivera who won't be participating because of a suspension he got last week. We'll see Vogel play tonight though as usual since he arrived to the club. He's really made a good impact in the Spain so far on me.

Another player Real Madrid should be carefull with is Sobis who scored two goals against Sevilla in the Sevilla-derby which is a enterataining game as always.

Real Madrid has to rise another level to if they want to beat Betis at home, because Betis is very strong at home and doesn't lose very often in Sevilla.

Diarra/Emerson has to start working together because they're to a like in their way of playing. Othewise, The big questionmark for tonight is probably Miguel Angel who's replacing Rivera, He'll have to pick up a great game.

I also hope Odonkor will be given some time on the pitch by Irrureta. He's capable of everything when he comes on the pitch.

Capello said there will be a different team today... Lets see what changes he makes.

i would like to see

-------------------------Casillas---------------------------------
Cicinho ---------Ramos---------------Cannavaro---------Roberto Carlos

-------------------Diarra-------------Guti------------------------

Beckham -----------------------------------------------------Reyes

----------------------------Robinho--------------------------------

-----------------------------RVN-----------------------------------

Althoug Capello will probably play Diarra and Emerson together and put Guti where I have Robinho

I still think Raul will be included in the team, That's behind Ruud and instead of Robinho, Unfortunately.

Great goal by Mamadou Diarra!

Nothing special. But he did perform better today and gave his team the victory.

Poor Cicinho and Roberto Carlos though.

Important win for Real Madrid.

Betis was totally without any dangerous chances this game, and Real Madrid fully deserved the win after a goal by Diarra with his head.

Betis sucked ass tonight and didn't deserve any points at all even though Rivera and the others were playing. They're still that Mid-table team which needs help in it's struggle to avoid relegation. But with the current team, they should be making it without falling out of the Primera Division.

Diarra was good today, I liked how Cassano tried to open up some space for his teammates, but it didn't really work to much. Raul should be on the bench forever..

Major losses if they would be injured for a longer time..

Cicinho's injury seemed like something serious. He was even crying, you saw.

About Roberto Carlos, nothing serious.

Posted by zoric on Sep-23-2006 22:16:

It was a really dirty tackle by Juanito on Carlos, That elbow in Carlos face..

Cicinho's injury sure does looked really bad as you say..

Posted by sensorium on Sep-23-2006 22:21:

Roberto Carlos is a warrior. He'll be back soon.

Posted by zoric on Sep-23-2006 22:23:

If you say so..

This win might cost us big time, Cicinho's first tests appear to be a major knee injury, 6-8 months if it is confirmed...

Terrible news for us when he was definitely earning the starter spot, and proving wrong many of us (including me) who thought he couldn't play that defensive role.

Roberto's cut is nothing serious...

Posted by The_G0dfather on Sep-24-2006 10:40:

Meh, no 6-0

Posted by zoric on Sep-24-2006 10:54:

They both didn't even have more than 6 shots on goal together..

Posted by The_G0dfather on Sep-24-2006 10:56:

I was counting on some own goals

I didn't think it was meant to be malicious. Juanito was looking at the ball and away from Roberto Carlos. Certainly Roberto Carlos or any Real players raised a fuss about it.

Posted by zoric on Sep-24-2006 20:43:

Don't know how the players would react on it, but Juanito did play with high elbows which normally results in stuff like that.

Posted by noikeee on Sep-24-2006 21:38:

Cicinho, ouch.

Posted by zoric on Sep-24-2006 21:51:

Real Madrid will be replacing him if he's gone for 6 months according to the news I've got.

Posted by luisjb82 on Sep-24-2006 22:59:

yes they can replace him...

although at this time of the season, it will be too hard to get a good defender... Real might probably try to snatch a centre back and move Ramos to right side and when Cicinho comes back he will fight Becks for his position... it doesn't add up as I don't see any good centre backs available in Europe.

It's just too funny now, I had been pointing out how we needed more players and now that the injuries are getting us we don't have a full decent squad for the subs. If Diarra goes down, who's gonna sub for him, Becks has no sub, Guti has no sub, heck even Emerson has no sub...

Raul is supposed to join Ronaldo and RVN as strikers, he is too slow to play in the midfield and it's a shame but he doesn't have that finishing touch he used to have 5 years ago

Anyway... I just hope we sign a good defender and move Ramos to the right side, it will add more height to our defense.
