PETA has an agenda to suffice, just like everyone else. Maybe you think they go too far (???), but if they are to accomplish even a fraction of their goal, they have to hit people over the head with something blunt just to get them to pay attention.
I do agree that their message can be obfuscated by their tendency to overstate moral absolutes through commercial pursuits, though.
The Sea Kitten thing really made them look like idiots
Fuck you all, now I have to take another shower

Originally posted by EddieZilker Really dislike the whole shock-value angle PETA types have taken. I actually do think that there is cruelty to animals that should be stopped and I'm not taking issue with your post, but it did remind me of a couple of TV commercials in which the suffering is over-played for words which would have sufficed.

PETA doesn't want stressed animals to be cruelly crowded into sheds, ankle-deep in their own crap, because they don't want any animals to die - ever - and basically think that chickens should, in time, gain the right to vote. I don't want animals stressed or crowded or treated cruelly or inhumanely because that makes them provably less delicious. And, often, less safe to eat. Anthony Bourdain from Medium Raw |

Originally posted by SYSTEM-J I have no problem with people being overweight. It's their body, their health, their life. What I hate is fat people who refuse to take responsibility for their own body. They blame society. They blame the food. They blame their metabolism. They blame their thyroid. They tell healthy people they're too thin, they tell themselves they're normal. The amount of overweight people who tell me I'm unhealthy, I'm too thin, I'm just lucky to have a fast metabolism is frightening. Millions and millions of deluded people, unable to face their own flaws, taking it out on others. Cunts.

Originally posted by fughawzi What a bunch of ableist bullshit. God, this forum is so depressing. There are many invisible illnesses that list weight gain as a symptom. A thyroid problem actually does make it harder to lose weight. I don't know what your problem is, you just keep coming across as an angry extremist about meat. It's like everyone's worst fear about vegans, flipped around. This is so ridiculous.

Originally posted by SYSTEM-J I know it does, but most people do not have a thyroid problem. Most people do not have any problem. I don't know how anyone can look at the statistics for obesity and then convince themselves they are some medical exception to the rule without ever getting a confirmation from a doctor that they have one of these "invisible illnesses". Do you happen to be on medication? For anything? Don't second guess the question, just a straight answer will be fine.

Originally posted by SYSTEM-J All my other anger in this thread has had nothing to do with meat or vegetarians or vegans. It has to do with fat people unable to take responsibility. And, as I've already made clear, my reason for that anger is because I've been attacked or criticised by these people all my fucking life for having a healthy bodyweight. My housemates do it to me. My BMI and body fat numbers are fine, but they say "You can't be a healthy weight". I had it from a guy at my last job, who made endless jibes about how skinny I was. The only reason I originally started lifting weights was to get rid of these comments, but that actually seems to have made things worse. The healthier you are, the more bitter their comments. You can blather about "invisible diseases" all you want, but I know these people, I see what they eat, how much they eat and how little exercise they do. And no matter what the obvious problems are, their logic is always, invariably the same. There are stock phrases that simply make my hackles rise.
Did you miss everything he said? It isn't about their bodies, it's about their inability to take responsibility for their health/life/diet choices.

Ah, my misunderstanding. I only skimmed your post.
