Wat nieuwigheden, reviews komen niet van mij
Lostep - Burma (Remixes) [GU MUSIC]
A: Sasha mix
B: Trafik AM rub
A few weeks ago when I reviewed the original 12" of Lostep's 'Burma', I commented that some extra remixes would not have gone amiss to give the release that extra edge. Obviously someone at GU HQ was listening (or it could indeed be coincidental) as the latest release on GU Music just happens to be new updates of the track, with Sasha's own reworking from his 'Involver' album getting a full release in it's own right alongside a new mix from the Trafik boys, who have taken time from putting the final touches to their eagerly anticipated artist album to deliver their own interpretation.
The 'Sasha Mix' is regarded by many to be one of the standout tracks on his 'Involver' album, and here it is in it's full 12+ minute form. The original's key appeal was its deep, driving soundscapes, but Sasha totally reworks the track, beefing up the beats and turning in a satisfying breakbeat mix that has excellent progression and sound engineering. It could be described as a slow burner, but in this case it's drawn out build up works superbly as different elements of the original are brought in and out of the main groove, creating a layered, dynamic mix that is absolutely stunning.
'Trafik' stick to the dark template of the original, creating a devasting four to the floor mix that brings downtempo elements and house grooves together as one, over the course of it's duration, the snarling bassline that grinds through the centre creating a moody tension that simmers nicely, as the original's melodies and vocals are brought in from the background, peaking midway, before the bottom end drops out and the dark pounding beats make their presence felt, and leading this stellar club mix to it's final destination.
Both mixes bring something different to the table, taking the original idea of 'Burma' off in two wide and varied directions, and both adding an edge to the track that the original lacked for many. One of the best releases on GU Music to date, the quality of which will hopefully be matched by some of the forthcoming projects that are scheduled from Trafik and Ashtrax.
Steve Porter - Vodka cranberries (Remixes) [Nu Republic]
A: Sean Q6 mix
B: Grayarea remix
The original 12" of Steve Porter's 'Vodka Cranberries' was yet another solid release from one of the most respected producers from across the pond, with the UK's own 'Fretwell' proving he can more than mix it up with the big boys when he needs to. Both mixes have received huge support, but haven't perhaps reached every niche that they could. Well that's about to be rectified with this remix disc. Sean Q6 and Grayarea are on hand to provide their own versions of the track, giving us the definitive and final set of mixes to complete the package.
'Sean Q6' strips the original down, dropping in some tight percussive rhythms and drum and sliding the melody through the soundtrack that emerges. The result is a deep, spaced out mix that tech heads or house purists will be all over. A hazy but oddly addictive piece of work that is carried along by the original's awesome melodic keys, but with a tech house groove that will really trip you out, in a fashion that only the man Cusick is capable of.
'Grayarea' pull out all the stops as per usual, taking the 4/4 route and turning in a pounding bass driven monster that will send the dancefloor into a frenzy. Killer riffs and heavy kickdrums turn up the tempo, with a few twists and turns making it hit like an unpredictable wrecking ball, building to all out devastation in the ballsy, brashy style that is very much a part of all of their tracks. One final drop near the end and the final assault will make sure nothing or no one is is left standing. A devastating mix from the Chi-town trio.
Nu Republic continue to lay the foundations of it's long term plan, with 'Vodka Cranberries' the first of many excellent releases the label has lined up for the coming months. These remixes of the track are an excellent addition to the original 12", and are just as deserving of a place in you record box.
DJ Falcon & Thomas Bangalter: Call on me (Eric Prydz & Retarded Funk remix)
Steve Angello - Voices In My Head (Eric Prydz Remix) Beetje electro-achtig.

Kasey Taylor & Chris Meehan - Between the lines [Vapour Recordings]
A: Original mix
B: Greed breaks mix
Tone Depth & Soul Tan feat. Stephanie Vezina - Broken (Remixes) [Swift]
A: G-Pal safe heaven mix
B: Stel & Good Newz mix
