Does whoever is killing these dudes on the other side of the world have a paypal account? Seriously, if they add a few hours to my commute I'm gonna send them some cash. Maybe attach a note: Please use this $20 to buy weapons designed for maiming.

not worth fighting a 40 dollar ticket cause i know i'll get a court date for sure, unlike the 30 or so parking tickets i've dropped off in the past few years

That is considered a minor ticket, get two of those and your insurance rates go up.

As long as it's there and not on a highway that gets entirely blocked off.

uh what? Genocide usually refers to deliberate extermination of a racial group within a country. The racial group being tamils and the country being Sri Lanka. In fact, to the south of the country where a majority of Sinhalese people live, they are completely unaffected by this and prior to BBC news making a huge deal about it--they were unaware of what was going on in the North.
AND, there are more tamils still in Sri lanka than abroad. There are roughly 2 million in the country, as opposed to around 600,000 abroad(the majority of them in Canada).
Genocide might be a harsh word to use in this situation, but in no way are the victims "casualties of war" when the government is deliberately bombing the so-called free-zones that contain hospitals and camps.

EDIT: spelling, fail at engrish

Downtown was quiet. No interruption in anything.

Either the media was hyping it up, or some Tamils were writing the stories, because the numbers were grossly being exagerated for this mornings protest. First I read thousands, then tens of thousands, then 100,000!!

Posted by Ozmozis on May-13-2009 21:56:

I was just listening to the radio and apparently a small plane with a banner flew over Queens Park stating "Protect Canada Stop Tamil Tigers"

*phew* was debating taking the college streetcar or the dundas one...good thing i took dundas...it was slow around university but turns out the college streetcars are at a standstill because of this.

Posted by StereoPrincess on May-13-2009 22:12:

There is people shoulder to shoulder on College filling it from University as far as the eye can see going east. Past Yonge. My estimate is 20 000 thousand. College is completely blocked.

The entire lawn of Queen's Park was filled and at about 5:20 they started moving down the street, down College going east. There was 400 people crossing the road every 5 minutes filling up Queen's Park. IF you thought the amount of people on the GArdiner was big, you should see the amount on College right now.

Posted by MarkT on May-13-2009 22:13:

my office is right at Bay/College.

I walked out to grab a coffee about 15 min. ago, right before they came down the street from Queen's Park. There were about 50 cops within sight of the intersection, preparing.

Then the crowd came though. I swear there seems to be 10,000+ people(?) It's been a constant stream of protesters for 15 minutes and they tail end just finished going by.

regardless of one's thoughts on the issues...it's remarkably well organized and impressive how the community has mobilized. seems to be relatively drama-free today. I support more of this type of protest than occupying the Gardiner for 12 hours, but this is still pretty crazy.

Posted by StereoPrincess on May-13-2009 22:18:

They are now not on College and have all moved down Yonge (my best guess)

Posted by me@t k@tie on May-13-2009 22:19:

Looking off my balcony (Yonge and College) I can see them heading southbound on Yonge. Damn. I can't believe how many people there are!
