It's pronounced :
e-on =
إيان

Clearly not ian!

And that's not even a dutch name

Wow this thread got a bit outta hand..

Okay after 37 pages my opinion then: I totally agree with AirPole. Threadstarter, try to see things from another perspective.. And also, it almost seems like everytime Newbie nr 92394 opens a thread, he thinks "Okay guys now that I have signed up The Biggest Music Discussion In TA History Can Begin" -> runs to open a "is trance dead?????????????"-thread.

yeah like thats what we all have been waiting for.

I haven't been on TA that long, but long enough to see those threads pop up every few weeks. People don't treat you like a newbie unless you behave like one, really.

Okay, I'm not looking to argue here or anything, but I really don't see any problem with these types of threads coming up every couple of weeks. I don't think it's so much what you said that new people think they can start the largest mus. discussion in TA history, but more they found this site and want to talk to like minded people who have the same taste in music as they do, after all, it might be their only way to talk to other people about EDM and so on, I know it is for me pretty much. But like I said, I really don't see the problem with these threads, some may say these repetitive threads take up too much space on the database, well there are a lot of nonsensical threads in the COR as well, and more often. I don't see the problem with either myself at all though.

Everyone has their own opinions about the repetitive threads but when it comes down to it, I don't think the TA veteran members need to be so rude to people about these things including new people. I think they should just explain nicely that it's the majority preference not to create these recommendation threads so often and so on - if they then get an attitude then let the flaming begin. But when you think about it, they are new to the forums and don't know exactly how these things work (I doubt there is anything in the rules about repetitive threads)

The problem with people starting these threads is that they fail to realize the subject has been brought up a million times before.

Because it's already been brought up so many times I believe all sides have exposed their feeling on the matter so how in the world is a new thread going to help advance the debate?

Actually at this stage I think there should be a stickied thread for that type of question.
YES it could get very ugly but I think it would help n00bs stop starting new threads on something that's been said or heard so many times before.
If there was a stickied thread I think there could actually be a real debate on the subject that would evolve over time and not become a raging flame war fest on the newbies whenever they join and start threads like that.

jdats right.. we've both been on here now for like 5 years, and it really is astonishing how many times you get different people starting new threads on stuff thats been icussed hundreds of times before. i seem to remember when ligaya came out, and there were 5-10 ligaya threads in here a week for ages, when really instead of starting a new thread for it you could just hit the search button, cos im sure youll find a few results for whatever discussion.

the only repetative threads that are acceptable really are the 'name some new trance tracks / or whats your favourite new tracks' cos obviously theres always new music coming out.

personally i think you should get a welcome email sent out to new members stating these guidelines, not rules as such, but just a pointer in the right direction, so people dont riled up so much. its silly yes, but it is annoying seeing 3 threads about the same thing all the time.

Would getting a seperate subforum for "FAQs/On Going discussions" type thing.. not be a good idea? then when someone comes on and fires a thread on thats been done to death, an admin/moderator fires it in there where they can still talk about it.. without clogging up Music Discussion.

I think its a pretty good idea, and has been done before on a football forum i frequent quite often, and it worked for them.

Posted by snowboarder45 on Jul-23-2006 11:32:

True, I suppose it could get annoying to some people, I just don't think being overly rude is the best way to show the newb's not to make threads that have been done before and such, cause really they just don't know how these boards work exactly. New people are constantly joining the site so I just don't think it's really going to solve that. Plus I think it scares people off the site and makes them afraid to post as well.

I agree to some extent, but im fairly new and havent had a flaming because if I wanted to find something, I used the Search button and read up on it in a previous thread.

Its simple laziness on the part of n00bs that causes such reactions; but at the same time there is never any justification for being a total arsehole with them. If you did that in person, a smack in the mouth would probably be the result!

in reality not many newbies read stickies,

it takes time to become accustomed to forums rules, every forum is different

That would be counter productive as there already is an FAQ forum and it gets little to no attention.
It is also a purely FAQ form section so that would not be an area best suited for an ongoing debate.

The focus needs to be on the Music Discussion forum and how this question can be channeled and better dealt with.

I think the objective isn't to avoid having that debate because regardless of the amount of effort put into not having it there will always be people bringing it back up.

Keep in mind that most new users who join will go directly to Music Discussion, sometimes their local forums, and the C0R... not some lesser frequented sub-forums. So it is important to focus on the most frequented areas.

I didnt mean the FAQ section, just a section for Frequently talked about subjects.. "is trance dead?" etc...

But you bring up a very good point, and i'd tend to maybe agree with you more than myself now... (am i betraying myself? )

You're right but I think the best way to deal with it would be as follows.

If someone starts a thread " Is trance dead ", a mod would close it and kindly point the person to the stickied thread.

Simple as that.

Take a look at the Dj Booth subforum and that's how it works in a sense. If someone brings up a question that has been asked a million times they kindly get told to go into the stickied thread.
There has been an ongoing Vinyl vs Cd debate thread and I think it's been going pretty good over the years.

I totally understood what you meant and I'm not saying it was a bad idea unfortunately when put into application it would be of little to no use because it's all about the Music Discussion and C0R

no offense but i believe in freedom of speech, this practise could discourage newbies from posting at all,

this is a massive forum, it's just a thing you have to live with,

trance is dead threads usually disappear really quickly if you ignore them, i personally never post in any of them,

further to this the search engine on TA needs to be improved, i post on other non EDM forums and there are much better and fasters options available, i quite often do not find what i am looking for and have opened a new thread because of it

It's called pointing them in the right direction where they can freely discuss the matter ( so saying that closing these new threads is against freedom of speech is in a sense a moot point ( but that is up to anyones own appreciation ) ).

I never post or even open these threads. But I think if there was a massive thread dedicated to the subject there would be a real debate not an ongoing flame war geared towards newbies and the likes. It would clean up the area a bit you know!?

The search is a problem but there are work arounds.
Furthermore the size of this forum is the exact reason that prevents the search from being more effective

i reckon the google algorithm would be better at indexing TA if it was employed,

having one thread for trance is dead - who says this topic is so significant, i see many more, what's your top tracks of this year threads etc which annoy me to a certain degree.

plus large threads over 30 pages are difficult to navigate.
i'm sure you've entered a 100+ thread and thought, no way am i reading the whole lot

perhaps we need a thread to re-organise TAs general structure,
the underlying forum technology is pretty old as well, so a facelift could be beneficial for everyone

Glad this thread turned into something of an intelligent discussion. Hope the mods will be around coz that's kind of a good idea.
