Robson should have been gone in the summer. He's sacked him now because of the international break, which means two weeks until our next match.
Shepherd made some good signings this summer, Carr for 2M, Butt for 2M, Milner for 3.5M and Kluivert for free were all great business. But by keeping on the manager while clearly not supporting him has had a bad effect on the dressing room, and going for Rooney when we need a defender sums up his attitude when we desperately need a centre back. All the players and all the fans are calling out for a defender. He has made a few 'enquiries' and small bids for Balde, Boumsong and a silly request for Cannavaro, but he's basically made fuck all real attempts to sign a defender and now we have 19 hours to try and find one without a manager.
We should have let Bobby go at the end of last season. I'd like to see us try hard to bring Phil Scolari in over the next two weeks but I think it's going to be a patch up job with someone coming in on a 'temporary basis' who doesn't give a shit about our future, keeping the position until Shearer can take over as manager at the end of the season. This club needs a shake up, someone coming in from outside with fresh ideas and fresh training and tactics, Shearer has no managerial experience, no coaches or backroom staff he can bring in so not a lot will change.

Birmingham warn Newcastle Birmingham chairman David Gold has warned Newcastle they will not be able to prise away Steve Bruce to succeed Sir Bobby Robson. Gold is adamant that Bruce, who led the Blues into the Premiership, will honour his newly-renewed contract. "Steve Bruce is ambitious but he is a young man, he can bide his time and finish his job at Birmingham." he said. "He is a Geordie and everyone knows his feelings, but I think that kind of connection is oversold in the media." In a surprise move, Robson was "dismissed" on Monday from his role as manager following Newcastle's slow start to the season. But Gold claims that his relationship with Bruce will ensure that his manager will stay put. "He has a great working relationship with myself and the rest of the board. He has a five year contract," he said. "I do not feel there will be the need to contact him to be assured of this because he is a man of integrity, and a man of his word," Gold concluded.
Ladbrokes have got their odds out on the next manager:
A Shearer 9/4
S McLaren 7/2
S Bruce 5/1
G Houllier 6/1
G Strachan 6/1
T Venables 6/1
S Allardyce 16/1
A Curbishley 25/1
M O'Neill 25/1
D Moyes 33/1
G Graham 40/1
G Souness 40/1
L Scolari 40/1
M Hughes 40/1
G Hoddle 50/1
J Gregory 50/1
K Keegan 50/1
I Dowie 66/1
M McGhee 66/1
S Pearce 66/1
P Beardsley 100/1
P Gasgoigne 100/1
Bruce is an aspiring Geordie with an apalling loyalty problem but I just can't see Newcastle going for him, Shearer is probably still too inexperienced and they've surely plucked McLaren out of the air cause I can't see that one either. I reckon Martin O'Neill at 25/1 looks good.

I have to say that few names on that list fill me with confidence.
Big Phil Scolari and Martin O'Neill are the only ones on that list I'd be happy with. Sacking Robson was the right decision at the wrong time, Liverpool and Chelsea got rid of their managers at the end of last season and brought in seasoned replacements, now look at our situation.
Martin O'Neill might be an option next summer but he won't come now.
Big Phil Scolari is going to be working with the Portuguese national team for World Cup 2006 but he might fancy it.
We need someone with experience of working under massive pressure and someone disciplined because Newcastle have gone off the rails a bit. Scolari would be my first choice but it's a case of whether he'd come, he said he was approached by Everton in the summer and rejected it.
Curbishley has done a respectable job with Charlton but this would be a step up for him. Maybe he is ready for the step up, but it's difficult to wrench a manager from their current club when the season has started and the transfer window is over.
Shearer hasn't completed his UEFA coaching badges, but he will have by next summer.
This is the day of reckoning. Freddy Shepherd has:
Sold Woodgate for 13.4M
Told the fans they will be "pleasantly surprised with the outcome"
Told fans he didn't sell Woodgate without a long term plan
Places a 20M bid for Rooney, but Man Utd get involved.
Places a 23.5M bid for Rooney, still no mention of a defender
Sacks the manager
Rooney goes to Man Utd
This is his last day to get a defender and it'll be absolutely disgraceful if he doesn't. The Fat Controller will have conned all the fans and neglected the clubs most urgent requirement. If he fails to bring in a defender today Shepherd has to go.
The way Shepherd has treated Bobby, treated Newcastle and lied repeatedly to the fans is outrageous. Let's not forget that this is the man who was exposed on tape in a Spanish brothel insulting the people of the region, he demonstrated his disregard for this club and the people a long time ago. We have conceded 9 goals in 4 games, if he doesn't sign a defender today he can expect a massive backlash from the fans.
Still keep yer mitts off Big Sam
In the newspaper this morning, supposedly Houllier is the 2-1 favoruite for the managers job. If that was to happen we would be in more trouble than what we already are.

Toon eye Tudor move Newcastle are considering a beat-the-deadline bid for Juventus defender Igor Tudor after failing to land Rangers' Jean-Alain Boumsong. The Magpies would need to pay around 2m for Croatian international Tudor, who is surplus to requirements at the Stadio D'Alpi. Juventus have signed Italian international Fabio Cannavaro, pushing 26-year-old Tudor well down their defensive pecking order. Newcastle have been forced to seek other targets after an approach for French star Boumsong - who only joined Rangers from Auxerre this summer - failed. "How could we possibly sell one of our best players?" Rangers chairman David Murray said. "We are trying to build a team and Jean-Alain has just arrived.

"Our recent record shows we can be trusted to deliver quality players. I'm not going to say too much at this stage but I think the fans will be pleasantly surprised at what results from the Woodgate deal. We didn't go into the Woodgate transfer without a long-term plan. All will be revealed soon." - Freddy Shepherd, August 2004

1 hour 45 minutes left, its what we expected, no defender. Freddy Shepherd to go.
had a read of all the papers on my break at work 2day bout this, the only thing in common is that it looks like douglas hall was the **** who is responsible for it all, not shepherd, hall owns 41% or 43% of newcastle shares, double shepherds, shepherd is the only one playing an active part, just doug is saying what had to happen and is.
also a lot of the papers blame it on dropping shearer, they are clueless ****s, shearer has been shit all season and crap at the end of last, he is slow + unfit, kluivert had a stormer against villa ffs
Bobby wasn't sacked because he dropped Shearer although it was 5 years to the day after Gullit did the same thing and lost his job. He was sacked because we haven't won for 10 games, because we won only 2 games away from home last season and have 2 points in 4 games this season. Bobby had also lost the respect of the dressing room, which was mainly Shepherd's fault by announcing that Bobby would be gone next summer, giving him very little power over his players.
Douglas Hall is taking the piss, he lives in Gibraltar and spends most of his time there, nobody even knows what he does for the club but he takes a massive amount out of it every year, he is one of the highest paid chairmen in Britain and nobody ever bloody sees him here. Something doesn't smell right about the way the club is being run, Shepherd and Hall seem to wield too much power and in failing to buy a defender they have lied to the fans and neglected their basic responsibilities.
It turns out the Fat Controller had no long term plan at all. The transfer window is closed, this is our defence until January:
RB: Carr
CB: Bramble, O'Brien, Hughes, Taylor
LB: Bernard

Elliot still might be played as the wildcard in defence..
Carver will probably step in as care-taker for a while.
Newcastle are in deep fucking shit.
Just look at the defence for ffs.
Newcastle to fight relegation.
Hate to say it but Turner aint far off the truth....fucking Shepherd WANKER.
Seeing as Desailly was released on a free and has no contract with a club, what would you all think if we were to sign him. Even if it was till the end of the season it would give us more options in defence.
I'd consider Desailly as cover in case of an injury crisis but he is very slow these days and gets turned way too easily, Shearer and Ameobi both made a fool of him back in April.
O'Brien and Hughes are both too weak at centre back, we are very susceptible to crosses and corners without Speed or Woodgate. I noticed the new team photo for this season and young Steven Taylor is big and looks pretty stocky, I wonder if he's any good in the air. We certainly lack that physical presence in central defence. We have nothing to lose in giving Taylor his chance now, we've conced 9 goals in 4 games. People say it could scupper his development throwing him into a side in disarray but it could be better for him, and he's seen as a big prospect according to managers who have worked with him like Tony Adams and David Platt. He's been injured the last few weeks (what's new) but I really hope to see him make a breakthrough this season and be our defensive saviour.
Here's the 04/05 squad photo, taken before Bobby Robson was sacked but after the Woodgate sale. Taylor is in the centre on the back row:

Rumour has it that Bayern Munich manager Ottmar Hitzfeld and Brazil and Portugal manager Phil Scolari are interested. Shepherd said "We have been swamped with interest from some of the best managers in the game, which is not surprising as this is one of the top eight managerial jobs in the world. We are taking our time and wont be rushed", but we can't believe a word Shepherd says. It has also been on sky sports that Terry Venables is favourite to land the job!
If it is true that Hitzfeld and Scolari are interested and Freddy goes for Venables then Freddy is taking the piss and has to go.
From the Journal:

Forming a queue Newcastle United are considering applications from four of world football's most respected coaches as the race to replace to Sir Bobby Robson gathers pace. World Cup winner Luiz Felipe Scolari heads an impressive list of candidates after representatives acting on behalf of Portugal's Euro 2004 boss contacted Magpies officials yesterday. But it is understood chairman Freddie Shepherd and his board are still seeking to appoint a British manager following the decision to dismiss Robson earlier this week. Scolari, Argentinian Hector Cuper, Dutchman Dick Advocaat and highly-rated former Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld have all expressed an interest in the vacancy at St James's Park during the last 48 hours. And Shepherd is refusing to rule out any of those coaches who are keen to inherit Robson's legacy despite Newcastle's precarious position near the foot of the Premiership table. However, the feeling within the board room is that United will be best served by a homegrown manager capable of both relating to, and instilling discipline in, a predominantly youthful squad in urgent need of direction. Should such an individual prove elusive then all four of the leading foreign candidates are renowned for their hard-line approach and Scolari, in particular, has a track record of dealing with troublesome individuals in his own inimitable style. The Dutch-born manager dropped Romario from Brazil's squad prior to the 2002 World Cup in the face of fierce criticism but still returned to South America with the trophy. One United player hoping former Rangers boss Advocaat's application is unsuccessful is close-season signing Patrick Kluivert. The Dutch international never made it off Holland's bench with Advocaat at the helm during Euro 2004 and it is unlikely the two would enjoy a close working relationship on Tyneside. Cuper's case will surely be founded on his reputation as a supreme tactician, but it is doubtful Newcastle fans would take kindly to his trademark defensive style. The South American will no doubt be aware of the Magpies' failings at the back, but appointing the former Real Mallorca, Valencia and Inter Milan coach would represent a huge gamble. Hitzfeld, of the four leading foreign candidates, is the most intriguing candidate, and the 55-year-old German is well known to favour a move abroad. The Premiership would provide one of Europe's most widely respected managers with an exciting new platform. "We are flattered by the interest in the vacant manager's position," admitted a source close to the board. "We are currently considering a number of applications and we are not ruling anyone in or out." Although Shepherd and his fellow board members are under pressure to appoint Robson's successor sooner rather than later, they are well aware a hasty decision could prove disastrous. And it is understood club officials have set an internal deadline of Monday to confirm the identity of the new man at the St James's Park helm. On the domestic front, Aston Villa's former Leeds boss David O'Leary is among those understood to be interested in the post, but Bolton have followed Birmingham City in insisting their team boss will not be moving to St James's Park. Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside yesterday dismissed speculation that an approach had been received for their manager, former Sunderland player and coach Sam Allardyce. His Birmingham counterpart David Gold ruled his manager, Corbridge-born Steve Bruce, out of the running on Monday, insisting he would stay at St Andrew's and honour his newly-signed contract. Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren announced on Tuesday that he would not be swapping Teesside for Tyneside, but United skipper Alan Shearer, Terry Venables, George Graham, Gerard Houllier and Martin O'Neill still figure prominently in the bookmakers' odds on Sir Bobby Robson's successor.
Taylors chance is now. With Woodgate gone this is the time for him to take a play as a regular in the 1st team. As far as im concerned the central defenders we have, none are certain ot get 1st team football all the time.
Taylor's got heaps of potential, given a decent run in the first team, he could perform very well.
Although, Bramble had potential as well and he has been a very slow starter
