if that's true, I agree...why ditch Babcokc at this particular time?
shitty to can him a year before the potential payoff. He's been decent lately with draft picks and ditching Alston for James. The new guy could look good by sitting back and reaping the rewards of another year's experience for the rookies, cap room for free agent signing(s), and multiple draft picks.
I'd be soooo pissed if I were Babcock if this is the news.
I hope the new GM has the sense to keep Mitchell around...I like him (even if he's still a bit of a n00b sometimes).
Maybe it's a high profile guy that will help attract a decent free agent or two in the off-season though ((Ben Wallace, please).
It's about time.
He lost all credibility last year when he got fleeced in the Carter trade.
I hope they keep Mitchell around. I agree, he's still a bit of a n00b sometimes, but overall he's a good coach.
My $0.02.
After seeing the press conference, I gotta wonder what kind of guy want to take a job in Toronto. Probably the most unstable GM/head coach place in NBA.
I feel bad for Babcock, I really do. He worked hard and he's starting to put together a team. But I think someone in head office wanted to start to see results right away and worried about possible bad moves that an inexperienced GM might make, esp. seeing how Carter is playing in NJ right now and how Indiana got Peja Stojakovic in exchange for Artest. Might also be the fact that big name free agents won't come to Toronto unless a proven GM is there.
Yeah he's made some questionable moves, but I don't think he's done bad. Would have given him another yr before giving him the boot.

AND the aformentioned Carter fleecing. 2 MAJOR mistakes, not questionable moves Thats enuff to get ANY GM canned in ANY sport. |

Problem is you wouldnt gain ANYTHING from that. I agree the timing of this is weird, but we have to remember we dont see/hear what's happening behind closed doors - him and Peddie could've had it out the last week and Peddie thought it was enuff. A LOT of things happen we have no idea of, so we cant say its (the firing) purely predicated on results - they've been playing REALLY well lately... |
Babcock really just f'd up bad on the Carter trade and signing Arujo over Igoudala...other than that...he hasn't been THAT bad.
though no one will admit it, I bet a fair bit had to do with he and Mitchell not getting along. Babcock decides to bring up Pape Sow...despite Mitchell publicly having stated that there's no playing time for him, lol. If it was due to their relationship, I DEFINITELY agree with keeping Mitchell and sacking Babcock.
the GM search is easy...Embry stays on for the draft, then phones Ben Wallace and see who he wants as GM...then Ben signs with us as a free agent in the off-season. done.

I'm very dissapointed with the raptor organization especailly peddie today. I'm so disillusioned by this move I'm writing to the swirsk, I'll post my letter when I'm done.

Well, another 2 game win streak. First a Rose buzzer beater to win in OT against Sacramento and yesterday another against the Wizards which they almost blew away.
Mike James = clutch
Rose is starting to get back in the groove again which is nice to see.
Pape Sow working his ass off every opportunity. Finally the Raps get a bit of shot blocking presence. Needs to control his aggression to not get in foul troubles though.
Well, looks like Sow has taken Araujo's job as the goon of Raptors.
Aaron Williams got traded to New Orleans for 2 second rounders. A steal for Raptors if you ask me.
i feel much more comfortable about the raps with wayne embry at the helm. imo, i think they should hire him on as their full time permanent gm...a ton of experience, a ton of respect amoungst nba execs, and a proven track record. kinda seems like a no-brainer?

w00t! Jalen + 1st rounder for Antonio Davis (Isiah is the worst GM ever, LMAO)
hello big name free agent next year thanks to ditching Jalen's contract (and Aaron Williams' in the earlier trade)...shitty they had to include a 1st round pick, but still a GREAT move. Arujo will (hopefully) learn from Antonio too...but that's secondary, lol.

| Sports Ticker/TSN 2/3/2006 4:08:06 PM Toronto Raptors' interim general manager Wayne Embry made a major move today, sending Jalen Rose and a first round pick to the New York Knicks in exchange for power forward Antonio Davis. The move is a salary dump for Toronto, which no longer has to worry about paying Rose the $16.9 million salary he is guaranteed next season. Davis is making $13.9 million this year, but his contract expires at the end of the season, which helps the Raptors clear a lot of cap room. The Knicks on the other hand, are slated to pay over $56 million next season to players who are playing less than 20 minutes per game this year or, in the case of Allan Houston, Jerome Williams and Shandon Anderson, not at all. It might be no coincidence that the Raptors pulled the trigger one day after star Chris Bosh pleaded for the re-signing of potential free agent Mike James, who has played very well for Toronto this season. The Raptors got 33 points and 13 rebounds from Bosh in Wednesday's 117-112 victory over Washington, their second in a row and 10th in 18 games after an awful start to the season. James added 29 points and made 5-of-7 3-pointers for Toronto, which is 2-0 on its five-game homestand. The Raptors have won four of the last five meetings with the Knicks after a 2-10 stretch in the series. While much of the season has been a dismal one for the Knicks, they provided their fans a reason for optimism with six straight wins to start 2006. However, a 129-103 loss here January 15 ended the run and kicked off an embarrassing slide. Including that setback, New York has lost nine of 10 games to fall behind Toronto and into last place in the Atlantic Division. Five of the losses have come by double digits and the club may have bottomed out with Tuesday's 130-97 loss at home to the Los Angeles Lakers. While the Knicks got Davis back from his five-game suspension, they lost coach Larry Brown to an ejection and lost their fans at some point during Lakers star Kobe Bryant's 40-point performance. The crowd at Madison Square Garden rained chants of "M-V-P" on Bryant, who made three more free throws (23) than the hosts. New York was paced by Qyntel Woods' 15 points and nine rebounds. |
The ONLY way this is a good trade is the salary dump - which is a valid reason.
I just hope they actually CAN convince a fre agent to sign in
the off-season, cause thats DEF not a guarantee.....
hahahha, i find this hilarious....antonio davis must be shitting himself right now....back to the raps.

Which first round went?
Embry is going to have to find a SG to replace Jalen, but no major loss.
it was the Denver 1st rounder (so not our own potential 1st overall lottery pick, lol)
looking at centres who will be unrestricted free agents after this season...Ben Wallace, Joel Przybilla and Nazr Mohammed.
So it looks like Bryan Colangelo is going to be next prez/Gm....last years executive of the year with Phoenix! WOW what a turnaround from the start of the season when the raptors were the joke of the NBA. This is great news simply because it instantly gives the team tons of respect throughout the league especially when dealing with free agents.

^^^ as long as they keep Mitchell.
the LAST thing this team needs is yet another head coach
I'm glad to see him apparently coming on board...but Embry would have been fine.

Three untouchables on the Raps, IMHO...Bosh, Charlie V and...oh yes...MoPete.
MoPete sinks all three free throws after being fouled with seven seconds to go on his 3pt attempt...now that is clutch.
but...another shitty loss in OT
they desperately need a legit big man to help on the boards.
