It's easy to blame it on MP3's but if somebody is going to tell me that because I buy both vinyl and CDs I am destroying the music industry then there is something seriously wrong with that person.

I have to agree, I've had the pleasure to experience the "seven year old movie star" attitude of people involved in the industry.

You should be able to use both Vinyl and CDs

Posted by Spirit5 on Aug-01-2005 20:12:

I just recently bought CDJ 1000 MK2s and I can tell you that CDs sound better and are much louder and clearer than vinyl. People might say "well was it your cartidge/stylus?" well I had a pretty damn good cartridge/stylus....the Whitelabels. I can just hear the highs better, the mids and the lows, all critical points, esp those highs. Even with my headphones, it sounds better. I used to think that there was something wrong with my headphones, but now I know that vinyl, as much as it had a "warm" sound, it wasn't loud or punchy. I still need to practice with my CDJ 1000 MK2s, to kind of relearn on those, but I do not regret my purchase, or now switching to CDs. For only 1.29 a song on Beatport.com, thats pretty damn good, considering I used to pay 9.99 for one record at DanceRecords.com.

cd's vs. vinyl

I've been spinning for 20 years and prefer vinyl.I do have a couple of cd players with all the toys but prefer to use vinyl. Only about 1% of my collection is cd's. Antonio

That's all for now, I'm just sick'n tired for reading debates based on opinions. Try putting yourself to other peoples shoes, maybe they'll fit better?

This is pretty much what everyone fails to recognise. Some people like vinyl, some people like cds. Some like Sasha, some like Tiesto. Some like trance, some like hip hop. People like different things for different reasons, certain things sound good to people.

Although, if used properly an electric guitar can work wonders in a symphony setting. Metallica S&M.

Posted by Nemesis44 on Aug-05-2005 13:47:

The fact that this debate still exists is actually amusing.

There are a lot of DJs out there and we all like different formats.

I actually play about 50 50 when it comes to CDs and vinyl. Still love vinyl.
I am actually looking into lap top DJing atm because I am interested where it might take me and what I can do with it in a creative sense. Not because I can DJ practically with my eyes closed, but I feel it's time to push the boundries even if they are just my own.

DJing is so much more than beatmatching two records especially in this day and age.

When your average clubber goes out they want to hear the songs they like and hear new stuff they may decide to like. They want to have fun and get excited. To think that most of them give a fuck about the format being played in is a big illusion. That's mainly anal bedroom DJs who are always going to criticise you whatever you do and think they can do a better job.

The real test of all this is out in clubland anyways...

I agree with all that you said. At first I just wanted to stress my feelings that's all.

Posted by erdega on Aug-06-2005 21:41:

I feel that vinyl is too big and expensive for everyday people and is only a niche for dj's nowadays. CD's are just a little bit too small for me and would prefer them little larger but hey it's not a perfect world.

But I really hope they increase resolution of these discs as they are becoming little outdated , don't you think?
16 bit/44khz and 2 channels might have been top of the line 10 years ago but now everything is moving into higher definition. When blu ray discs start coming out by the end of the year, movies will have audio resolution of 24bits/96khz on 8 channels. Audio discs shouldn't be lower than that.

i think so...

so your saying if you buy all of the songs as high quality Mp3 and burn them to cd and spin them you wont repect a person's mixing just because they using cd's? That is the case for me and a lot of people i believe.

its a shame vinyl is dissapearing and it will be non existent soon

next to dissapear is being able to buy cd's. now virgin and hmv have started an mp3 site we can kiss goodbye to going to shops for our music.

im dreading when i have to start burning all my vinyl to cd due to clubs only having cd players.

the only music i listen to now is stuff from the ta forums. its fresh and is keeping trance going. and its free!

I agree, to be honest, have taken a break from DJing as there isn't much out there that actually makes me want to play at the moment. Admittedly have been away for a bit as am on holiday. But when I left the music scene was toilet in my humble opinion. I find that an already quite formulaic sound has become incredibly stagnant and that labels seem to be afraid of signing anything new.
MP3 has made the industry stand on its head at the moment and who knows what we will see next.

I watch and wait.

I Like vinyl. If I am not mistaken, there is no beat matching with CD's?

Where is the fun, and skill?

With vinyls, if your not good at beat matching, you are always working, listening and concentrating, making sure your getting everythign matched.

And with cd's, what is there to do, besides mix? It's not respectable, in my opinion.

You are, in fact, mistaken.

Mixing cd's is not very different from vinyl.
All you do is pitch, and cue. The process is almost entirely the same with both cds and vinyl. There are a few pros and cons with both. If you read the thread you'll find out what they are.

Personally I use both cds and vinyl. I prefer vinyl because i think it's easier, and I dont really have a pair of good cd players ( cdj-100s ). If I had a pair of cdj-1000s I probably wouldnt bother dragging my plastic with me when I gig.

Yeah, cds just magically change their pitch and cue points and actually judge when the best time to drop the next track in is. Its amazing to watch. You just slot the little critters into the drives and awaaaay they go. No need for beatmatching or listening as such. I mean at first I though it was just a little man inside there doing all the mixing for me, and then I realised...

I was smoking crack...

No, it's not like that at all. DJing is very much what you make it, if you want to just mix tracks together the traditional way then you can do it with CDJs but it opens a whole new world.

Look into properly though as you will be surprised.

I dunno, what do you think about it? Decide for yourself but imho laptop sets are a completely new form of performance. Its so far from djing track to track its not really worth comparing. Most of the people that slag off Live havnt even opened the program let alone put together a set. If your into production the ability to remix your own tracks live is something completely new. As a result its percieved as lame or uncool just like cds were 12 months ago (read posts in this thread a year ago and see for yourself). The only thing thats lacking is DJ reaction. This will change when DJs start adopting midi interfaces instead of clicking the mouse. Infact, check out the Lemur configurable touchscreen just released...

clicky

Now imagine a guy up there with a couple of those and a 12 channel midi controller all wired into Live. EQ, fx, all the shit...

starting to get the picture?

Its got fuck all to do with DJing really If anything, this will actiully bring the scene back to live performace acts playing their own productions and further away from DJ's. About time some balance was restored to the force imo...

wow! That is really nice! The reason why i mentioned it was the recent surge in ableton users who go live. BT has been using it for a very long time (or so i heard) in his laptop symphony, but now we have sasha, james zabiela, tania mann and gabriel and dresden just banging out with ableton sets. Vinyl vs CD should not be debated anymore, its clear now that you need both to keep up with computer mixing.

Are you saying people who put their tracks on cd's including producers do it for the money and dont put out their heart and soul to make a song sound great and a mix sound great?

CD decks are getting better all the time. Closer to vinyl. At some point they will be able to emulate vinyl. Yes vinyl looks better but you can have just as much fun with cds. Plus storing and finding tunes on cds is so much easier. Vinyl is ok when you don’t have a big collection. But when you have thousands of tunes form the last 10 years like I do it’s not practical. I had to record my vinyl to CDR. Now I can find any tune I want within seconds. All my mates have vinyl but have some banging tunes missing from there collection because they couldn’t get hold of the vinyl.

It’s the music that counts not the format!!!!!!!!!!

i know i'm going to have to say goodbye vinyl someday, but man, do i love the feeling of those grooves on my fingers....
