haha... I got this funny picture in my head of me dying over my turntables when I'm 80 years old, and my kids (and grandkids for the matter) yelling at me to turn the music down or else I'll have to get yet ANOTHER hearing aid... MUHAHAHA, funny what dance music can do to one's head

Smiley DJ

Hopefully it's never too late to start, I'm 23.

Posted by burns on Apr-19-2003 07:16:

Look at all the big names, they are all in there thirties and mid thirties....so you got plenty of time to get up the ladder !

Posted by hapamoto on Apr-19-2003 08:12:

music doesn't know how old you are.. and everyone is saying whats up, i know that there seems to be a lot of younger kids out on the boards but you can't let that represent a real sample of the age of dj's, that only really reflects the age of dj's on these boards, usually us older folks might not have as much time on our hands to get around and post on year as much as we'd like to, but thanks to these guys that are always up here posting and giving advice, they get the job done. so what matters is not that your 21 and maybe your neighbor is 15, the fact is, 3 yrs down the road (assuming u both start dj'ing tomorrow) he will be 18 and have 3yrs experience behind him and you will be 24 and will also have 3yrs experience.. but wait, mr 18yr old is busy filling out college applications and just starting to learn about supporting yourself and living on your own and not having money and being a starved college student, but you will have passed that stage and will not have money as an issue cuz u will have a real job (hopefully). so now i ask, in 3 yrs, which person do you want to be? i hope that makes sense, i'm 23 right now, i started out when i was 20, age doesn't matter cuz the only thing it can affect is exterior variables such as your own economic and social lifestyle, not your love for what you do (or wanna start doing!), either way, we love the music and thats what lets some of the older people on this board like me participate in conversations with 16~17 yr old kids whom in real life i'd probably pay no attention to if i saw them on the street (im not trying to offend the younger guys here, im just being real). on that same note, i'd also like to point out that time waits for nobody, so the longer you sit around thinkin' about how you wanna start dj'ing is more time your wasting but not just going out and doing it. and like someone else said, its not about what other people think, or even what i think or anyone else on this board, if the general idea was that yes you are too old, then you should say "well then to hell with all of you, i wanna dj damnit and thats exactly what im gonna do!" now go find a job and start saving up for ur gear.

But, I bought 1 TT and I alrdy had a CD player. I started with that. I really like doing what I'm doing, I practised alot (up to 1h30 a day, every day) and now I think i'm kinda good in the basics now. And, now I'm saving up for a second TT.
But I still think, the younger, the better.

omg.. 14yrs old? u can't even drive to gigs, how do these kids do it? how can they afford gear? when i was 14, i was still shoplifting candy from 7-11 cuz i couldn't buy it (well that seems extreme, but 7 yrs ago we had to actually pay for CD's and whatnot so i couldn't be wasting $$ on treats).. but i feel sorry for u guys that thought u were too old, i mean c'mon, how can 17 or 21 be too old to do anything? besides maybe playing crayons and coloring books maybe.. u guys should be worried about being to young to buy alcohol and gamble (legally that is) and u've got ur whole life ahead of you.. so stop worrying and start endulging

Posted by Tiger777 on Apr-19-2003 11:33:

you hear lots of storries about them here! But now, i'm convinced that it is almost impossible. They aren't allowed to work, HOW THE HELL do they pay it?
You're right, that's just cheap storries for ppl who are outside this world

I don't know how old he was when he started, but theres a local dj here who's about 18 I think and he plays every week at some party and he has already played in some of THE biggest places around here.

No doubt the best advice.....thanx man.
im going to tape a copy of the post under my table when i get some

the reason i ask this is because 21 is huge, juggling friends school, girls, family, money.......no time for self at times. just wanted to know if people actually found djing rewarding it seem that they have. i realize that pondering will get me no where as soon as may comes around (after school) ill get some decks. Another dent in the wallet but what the fuck, right?

Posted by abnorm on Apr-22-2003 19:09:

Well now I feel too old! I am 26 next month and I am just getting my second deck.

Posted by DJ LIQUID on Apr-23-2003 15:36:

You can never be too old to get into the game

heck you can probably start out with the good stuff(gear) because of your age (job wise...you should be getting paid alot more than a 16 year old working fast food)

I started when i was about 14/15...only because i was craving to do so since i was about 7

it took lots of discipline to save up enough money but i did it...i didnt start out with the good stuff but still got to do what i had been dreaming about...spinning

It seems like you and i had a vision...just at different times of our lives

if your gonna be a hobbiest or plan on going to the big time you have got plenty of time...heck most big name djs are at least like 25+

I wish you luck

Let's post a conclusion here
The younger you start, the better it is, but as long as you lik ewhat you're doing, you're NEVER too old.

Not really. I think its all about the experience you have and what you know. The only point i can see you making is that if a 16 year has just as much experience as a 21 year old, the 16 year old is better off And well thats kinda true because he's younger, but that can just as easily be a downfall, because a promoter dosent want to be hiring a 16 y.o for a gig, only to have a parental supervisor standing next to him to stop all the girls from juming on him...

To the dude that started this post, if i we're you, id buy those CDJ100's some guy was offering to sell you. there great, fun, and are a great way to start off because there alot easier to use then vinyl.(but im only saying this because of you're tight budget) im sure you have stacks of cd's that you'll be able to play on them

Posted by Zain on Apr-26-2003 19:39:

I cant agree with that, Dj'ing is all about the VINYL feel, you have more control, manipulation, and feel with vinyl. You dont have to get desperate, just work and buy your decks a little later.
Personally i worked for 3 months everyday at an A&W to make enough money for decks. (i think i was working 40 hr weeks during school)
After i finally got decks, this kid from my school got decks about a week later, from his dad. FOR FREE. Rich kids should get shot.

That's kind of a backwards argument. That's like saying there is no benefit to investing your money when you are 18 because you don't have much of it.

Yes, a 16 year old may have a tough time getting a gig, but which 21 year old will get a gig, one that just started, or one that's been donig it for 5 years?

That's another thing I can't stand . . . people who think they are all high and mighty because . . .

Some people have it better than others. Get over it. You've never gotten anything for free? If someone has well off and generous parents, more power to them. Would you turn it down?

KarateKid

if you someone feels too old to get into dj'ing then start by producing i bet you get further sooner, cuz people will know you better if you make an awesome song that tons of dj's will end up spinning than if you're some cool local dj...

Posted by DaveSZ on Apr-29-2003 02:54:

It seems that to make it big, you must produce as well as DJ...
That requires an innate ability that you are born with. The great producers of music (electronic or otherwise) were born with that talent, and they were lucky enough to be able to take advantage of it.

p.s. There's nothing wrong with doing it for yourself or some friends.

WHAT do u recommend

Tech 1200's
or
CDJ-1000's

i think you should pick whichever u have more of, whether its vinyls or CDs, cause its more logical and it will help you get started. i got CDJ 100s cause i had more CDs and i couldnt afford to buy vinyls (im 17 and i started a year and a half ago) so imo pick the one u have more of then later on move to the other platform.
and also
you can never be too old to start DJing

Lazy kids, let them work for their decks, then they'll respect them more!!!(i'm working my ass of for my 2nd deck)

Posted by loki on May-01-2003 01:32:

Man, I agree with the everyone else ... it's never too old. Hell, I started at 27

And I noticed that money is a concern? If so, and you want to start cheap, look into some CD players. I prefer Vinyl, but it costs quite a bit to start up with a decent Vinyl setup. With CD's, it's soooo much easier and cheaper to get started. Just my thoughts

If money isn't an issue then get some Technics, some kick a$$ records, a nice mixer, and spin your arse off. But if money is a concern, check out the CD stuff. American Audio is dropping prices on some of their equipment (looks like a new line is getting ready to come out). And I think some other players have come down as well.

Good luck and have fun!!!

Loki

Gonna be 28 in three weeks and just started spinning last year. Ya i feel old compared to other people, but im still enjoying the music and partying hard. I've always wanted to spin and now I am. Theres no other feeling like mixing two songs perfectly, its like magic. As long as i still enjoy the music and can make a couple mixes for my friends to enjoy, im happy. I know one day I will be definitely too old to spin, but as long as you still feel young, go for it.
