Hm, I don't know about the mainstream issue. Personally I wouldn't mind hearing more trance on the radio, if it only meant that people would grow to appreciate it.

As for the cheesing-up money-making, who knows? Trance (any electronica, even) is so unique that I don't know if you can "cheese it up" in the mainstream world enough. It seems to me that it would then just turn into Euro crap. But we already have that, so what's the worry?

Anyway my original point was not whether trance should be mainstream, but rather that there is a disappointing gap (rather, crevisse) between the popular trance events, attracting huge trance DJ's, and the regular clubs (the "underground" ones), which are pretty much devoid of trance at all.

as Itika said, PvD's track was on the radio the other day and i'm quite disapointed actually. It's a sign that trance is gonna be commercialized here in Toronto and again: we're gonna have the gino issue (lets not get into that...i have a few things i wanna say about ginos myself) Also as DigiNut mentioned

Conclusion: Keep trance the way it is, we as a community are all "in the know" so we'll be fine.

and yea.. i say keep trance the way it is. I swear if DannyD ever spin a "real" trance track (not a eurotrance bs that he calls trance) i'm so gonna.....grrrr, i dunno.. guys i need ideas to seek revenge. any help?

agreed. it would be bad if it got too commercialized.

Argg.. we've opened up an entirely different can of worms.. lol.

DJRocco, what you've said regarding Danny D got me thinking...

I've noticed lately that when I talk to people about music, and they ask me what I listen to, after I say "trance", I get one of the following replies:

1) "Ohh!! That's cool!! I also listened to trance before i got into [insert mainstream garbage]. I still remember ATB and Darude..they were cool."

2) "Nice! So do I - you ever heard of Scooter?"

... etc.

Basically, things along those lines. It's funny, 'cause every time my hopes rise when it seems like I've found someone who likes trance, and then they dash my hopes by plainly showing that they have no clue what the hell they're talking about.

It's disappointing that mainstream music/media has diluted the meaning/definition of trance (or, rather mutilated it) to the point that people confuse it with stuff like Scooter.

Every time I talk to people like that, and they say how much they love their "trance", i think, "My God, if they only knew what Real Trance was....!"

That's why I think people need to be educated on trance. It wouldn't hurt to get more "real" trance exposure on radio.

But.. should a line be drawn? And where? Interesting questions.. interesting issue in general.

I didn't quite pick up on that the first time, but I understand what you're saying now. It would be nice to have more trance at clubs regularly, but I think the problem is that very good trance DJ's seem to get very popular very fast, to the point where clubs can't afford them as residents. Except for the UK, where trance IS mainstream.

But I wouldn't wager money on that - it's just one possible reason why things are the way they are with trance. Personally it doesn't bother me, since I like the jungle/breaks/HHC/psy parties too.

In relation to "cheesing-up", I wasn't really referring so much to changing the music itself, so much as having it used as a marketing tool. Hearing trance music on an ad for AOL and seeing the next WEMF sponsored by Wal-Mart would just not be cool at all...

radio is not a source of education. Radio is commercial and it's a money making tool. I think trance (and the scene) will be destroyed and we're gonna have a new genere called "commercial" trance.

U can't let the radio educate the ppl. It's our job to educate them. I mean think about it: would u rather have a teacher based on what will be a hit and sell more or someone who really apperciate the elements of trance and the culture?

Trance is more than just music, trance stands for alotta things! Freedom of expression is one of them. Our culture, it's very rare that u find a producer/DJ critisize another but rather help out each other and really care less about copyrights and focus more on things that matter.

As i said, trance is not only music, it's a culture. U can't teach a culture over a radio station.

Awesome observation there. Time to move to the UK.

But seriously, having very good trance DJ's is one thing... but how about ye olde average trance dj? Where are those? I'm totally baffled... there are MORE clubs that play the stuff that is, IMO, less popular than trance, than clubs that play trance.

Maybe elitists of the lesser known genres equate trance with cheese? That's just another case of ignorance...

Ohhhh I see what you mean!! Yeah, dayum that would be bad. Down to corporate rule!!!

LOL funny examples you have there... WEMF sponsored by Walmart? rofl!

Very Wise. i have nothing to say, other than:

'nuff said.

One thing leads to another, and Gino's will adopt Trance music as their own. Then we see the sparkly pants driving around and playing PvD 'coz its hip thing to do. Who seek shall find.

Don't worry, guys.

As someone already stated, trance (and really, electronic music in general) is part of an entire culture. If it starts to become polluted with Gino culture and corporate rule, a new sect will eventually break off and move underground again - it's already happened in some places with the emergence of psytrance.

Sure, we may occasionally see pop culture invading the electronic events, especially at big clubs like the Guvernment, but that's really only to "check out da hot girlzz." There will always be more hos to chop at the Gino clubs, no matter how mainstream electronic music becomes.

Posted by LKD on Apr-17-2003 03:29:

here is what one of my hip hop loving friend's who has his own promotion company told me once: "you love trance cos its unpopular and associate with it to be different but you keep saying u want to get trance out there and expose it to more people???why would u want to do that and make it commercial??"

very intelligent perspective...after he told me that it struck me that the reality of our passion is the fact taht we embrace non conformity (music and style in our case) and should keep it like that

Actually I went with a very good friend of mine (who goes to McMac) to see Aphrodite at some club in Hamilton a while back (forgot the name). And yet I doubt they get any trance stars like that..

Yes, that was crazy that Aphrodite played in Hamilton! He's like the Armin van Buuren of DnB no? Was that at Home nightclub?

Another thing. People in Hamilton should post on TA when events are happening..There's stuff happening but being a part of the campus culture I feel divorced from the rest of the city. In recent weeks Jelo and Deko-ze both spun in hamilton and I only found out on flyers after the fact!! Shit, that would've been convenient.

w00t!

For Aphrodite, I would make the trip to Hamilton any day! Please don't tell me Roni Size has spun there too!

I agree, for events that big I want to hear about it! This is a forum for all Ontario!

Wicked...I've never heard of any of those djs...but that's mostly the copper lounge. Have you been to that place? I've been a couple times and it's pretty cool. The atmosphere is wicked, it's all hardwood floor with a total chilled out copper ambience...and there's all sorts of couches that resemble beds..pretty cool. I really like it. One problem...the crowd. I have never seen anyplace erupt into such a gino fest. I went one time and all these people were throwing cushions around and acting retarded...noone was really there for the music and noone was even dancing. THe music is all house which is wicked...so I'd still go back, but only with a group of people who are there to enjoy music with me..any maybe even dance!

Hehe, glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know who those DJ's are. Well, I actually have heard of Eric Davenport from somewhere, and I've got a magazine article on Hatiras, which is how I found out about him.

Anyway, I've never actually been to Copper Lounge. I'm only ever in Hamilton to see a couple of family members, which isn't often at all. It sounds like a pretty cool place.

As far as the crowd goes - it's Hamilton. I've always known Hamilton as having a lot of ginos. As you mentioned, they don't often seem like they're in a club for the music. And to dance? Hehe...
None the less, I'm sure it would be a good place to hit up with some TA's. We could turn that place upside down with the vibe we create.

I totally agree. As much as I wanted to get out of Hamilton, I'll be working here for the next 2 years probably So I"ll have to take advantage. (But hey, TO aint that far away, so I"m happy with that) There's some stuff going on, and the scene needs to be supported. If you or anybody is interested in checking out Copper Lounge on Saturday...post!

Hamilton does have some good stuff to offer, so yeah, definately take advantage of your time there. A TA outing to Hamilton doesn't sound like a bad idea.
