How different was it back then? I remembered when I first joined up this board was heaps serious in music and trance discussion. Even in the chill out room I dodn't recall seeing the type of threads I see nowadays..

About the actual thread though, although I didn't really start posting here until a few months ago, I've been coming to these forums since late 2000/early 2001, and I understand what you all mean by the loss of quality and whatnot in the threads here.

I agree on the flaming bit, the feeling of anonymity granted by the internet changes most people in ways usually completely contradictory to their usual lifestyle. I've seen shy people turn into witty, outgoing people thorugh instant messaging services. I've seen thouroughly decent people succumb to the temptation of resorting to something as lowbrow (and quite frankly, immature as well as pointless) as name-calling, for no discernable reason. Indeed, the internet has managed to wedge itself into ALL of our lives, no matter who we are. With forums now being more user-friendly than the bbs systems of old, more and more people are being drawn to them. Additionally, the widespread use of instant-messaging programs only encourages this alternate form of digital commuication. Not that it's a bad thing - after all, they are only tools. The actions done with the tools are what determine the standards of good or bad.
If one stops to think about it, one eventually comes to the realization that the major source of infulence on most teen-agers nowadays tends to be pop music, the T.V., and more and more frequently, forums where there is no "real" consequence for treating others as complete shit for no reason whatsoever. To me this is a frightening prospect, knowing that the "children of the future" will, as a whole, grow up to have a higher percentage of assholes than previous generations have had. If this is the direction of the future, then the future is very bleak indeed.

Looking back on that post it seems to have gotten quite abstract, hehe. Sorry about that. Feel free to use it for your next sociology paper though .
Just for reference, I'm an 18 year-old male in California. I think the post gives the impression that I'm from the baby-boomer generation, lol.

just my 2cents... seems like mainly the new members are mainly the culprit in all the thread lockng and flamings. and as noted by lena earlier, its the reason why so many old members have moved on. so much hostility for minuscular reasons. its quite pathetic really, how ppl take the forums so seriously. 
. arguing and demeaning others over the net is pretty sad... it wont kill you to just ignore stupid comments and ppl ya know...

Nah, it's no worse than it's ever been, just different ppl doing the flaming, this time 2 years ago it was coup, Dj martin and yevat causing all the trouble, now its dj miro back again in his new names.
one simple suspension will kill off half the flaming on here.
And i don't like to lock threads unless i really have to, but personal abuse to each other simply wont be tolerated, same with racisim, post crap like that and u are guranteed a banning.
as for the older members, we usually hang out in chat, preferring to talk in real time about trance and related topics.
