i am an atheist as well. religion is just an excuse some people make up for things they can't explain... a waste of time, really

First to say, I'm an atheist with a streak of agnosticism.

im an atheist (along with half of australia).. religions are for people with weak minds that cant accept that we are completely useless and whose lives have no value what so ever in the scheme of things. a very sad amd depressing concept for most (even for atheists) but enlightening for a lucky few (not saying im one).

The only way you can be certain something does not exist is if it has contradictory properties, such as a square circle. So, unless you can show what contradictory properties all gods and goddesses have, atheism is as irrational a position as traditional theism.
here we have an intelligent discussion of religion and star trek. how those two are connected, i have no clue, but please, carry on
I don't believe God exists. God was never anything more than an icon to the people that want to believe that an icon has power.
Those who believe in the power of God are manipulated by the image that is a symbol for God. [Those that are not believe that the system is weightless, that we are free-willed and noncomformist].
God is just a label. God is a product of media. People who believe in God need to believe that something gives them security, comfort, whatever.... so they rely on that mainstream logo.

you need to read posts more carefully. first of all, are you saying that just because *i* don't understand atheism?
quote:
Untrue. Just because don't understand atheism, and give it a pseudo-definition doesn't mean that their definition is right. Atheist - One who does not believe in any god or gods. Whether this is what the mass accepts or not, it is still true.
it's simple really, people initally came up with the idea of god(s) to explain the unexplainable... then it kept being taken further and people came up with religions, and look where that has led the world...
:/

i am religious and don't consider myself conservative or anything else. some people do believe in god just to justify their idiocy and ignorance, but i'm not one of them.
however, i truly despise the way the religion is commercionalized in america (and the name of it is baptism).
even if you are an atheist, you could at least have some respect for the centuries of traditions and values the humanity has accumulated with religion, and i'm not talking about inquisition here.
i don't consider myself to be an atheist - i believe in the christian god and for me believing in something means, that you have to believe in something you cannot see or touch - you have to feel it! this sounds strange in a way, but i can feel god, i can feel that i'm not alone in this world and that my existence isn't senceless. i can feel that he is "out there" and he helps and guides me. i have made some experiences i cannot declare as coincidence, any longer.
you cannot experience god when you dont consider it possible that there might be a god..
ok, i cant proof the existence of god in a physically way - but can you proof that there is NO god??
think about it..

Has anyone argued from the cosmological angle?
I find that Atheists are puffed up with hubris, and are unwilling to accept that there is anything that Man cannot or will not do.
Theists are willing to accept that we cannot do everything.
I agree more with the second worldview.
I think I'm more of an Agnostic than an Atheist
Here is one of my major problem with Christianity:
Because God is omnicient, he created people that he knows will not believe in God. These people then go to hell because God created them the way that he did and then they are punished for eternity. I have trouble believing in something that would create people to just be punished.
The counter argument would be the whole free will thing. But if God created you without know what you would do, then he isn't omnicient.
My reasons for not believing in god is because of what he would stand for, not because i don't believe he doesn't exist. I cannot see believing in something like that. No that does not mean i am a satanist either.

God is only a theory concieved in order to explain the beauty and mystery of nature, in the same way that evolution and the big bang are also theories. Some have a problem accepting that fact. HAHA. Try telling that to my grandparents or President Bush lol.
I learned a long time ago to stay out of religious arguments. Both sides can argue til they're blue in the face and neither side will concede to the other.
im atheist
now lets burn down some churches.
or maybe not.
i am actually an atheist though...
