That's natural in all walks of life I'm afraid. The people in the spotlight will always be the ones at the front. What do people think of when they think of war heroes? They think of soldiers charging around, not the logistics personnel and so on who played an equally important role. It's just the same with football. Strikers are the matchwinners who put a smile on fans' faces, goalkeepers can only ever bring a sigh of relief.

That's why I asked people to pick an all-time eleven, to represent all the positions.

Maradona will survive and will dominate because hes the greatest

Now I might be wrong, but judging from your pic, you don't look like you remember the 50's too well. I may be way off base. You may be a posterchild for Oil of Olay, but then again, the only people I know who remember the 50's aren't using internet forums on a regular basis. Yes of course, you're bang on with your sharp analysis. People like Pele, Puskas, Eusebio, Matthews were all crap really weren't they. With their long shorts and their boring black & white kits. Couldn't fucking make it for Shrewsbury reserves could they?! Maradona may have been a better all round player. Certainly pretty good at volleyball for a little fucking midget. STILL claiming he didn't put the ball in the net in '86 with his hand, and STILL justifying an appearance fee for a Europe vs. Rest of the World charity match while every other player appeared free, makes him as much of an ambassador for football as King Herod was for babysitting, and what for fuck's sake, exactly is it that "he will dominate"??? I've been thoroughly amused by the most ridiculous comment I've read on here in a while. Thankyou. "Pele was overrated." LOL. Fucking brilliant!!!

is this a "best overall player" thread? or is it a "best overall player OF HIS TIME" thread

because THEN Pele would be it. Kinda like Hendrix was the best guitarist OF HIS TIME. but if you look at other guitarists such as Eddie van halen.. who blow Hendrix out of the water when it comes to skill (just listen to Eruption). also Slash is a killer guitarist
but enough of that
im talkin about best overall player,as i mentioned before.. take Pele at his prime and Mara at his prime. who do you think will dominate? it might be fairly close but i believe Maradona will come out on top.

Posted by evil_bastard on May-22-2003 01:50:

If someone says "Pele was better than Maradona" they don't mean "Pele was the best of his time" they mean, believe it or not, that Pele was better than Maradona. I think Pele was the greatest ever, 1,280 goals in 1,360 games is just unbelievable, he was a scoring machine!

Monkey Dancer 2

I say Pele, he was wizard with the ball and true sportsmen....
Maradona was a great player but a junkie....

eusebio was a forward..

but there is no point IMO in saying who's 'the best player ever', competing level evolues from year to year, therefore the best player nowadays is 50 times better than the best player in the 40's decade.

alan shearer for obvious reasons!

But if players of the past were to play now, they would be conditioned better, stronger and faster. So it really is hard to say who the best football player of all time really was/is.

Hold on! I have a great idea! Let me wake up my dad and ask him this question. Surely his answer will matter more than mine.

[jeopardy theme]

Doh! I got a black eye and didn't get shit from him. Thanks alot guys. I'll try to get the answer tommorow.

BTW, my answer is Pele. His name is mentioned more than any other football player. Think about it this way. There has to be a reason that Pele's name would come up first if you were to mention the sport soccer/football. Not to take away all the other great players of their respective times.

as I said....my list still represents the best.
