Ah if I had only been told this a while ago.

That's what makes the research so interesting ... if homosexuality can be induced in flies by a simple flip of a switch, could homosexuality be induced in humans by the simple flip of a more complex switch? Is attraction simply a result of the chemical/genetic makeup of our brains? Could we change a man's attraction to let's say trees rather than girls by simply screwing around with genes?

And wether a person's sexuality is a result of genes, education, the environnement you live in, natural or not...why does it bother ppl so much? Just live your life and let other live theres.

Nobody is jumping on the anti-gay bandwagon here . Just seems like an interesting topic to discuss ...

Edit: btw, if homosexuality is largely as a result of genetics won't it be ironic that the church would condemn god's own handywork?

nature, no one can choose to be gay

especially since gay is probably the MOST used all purpose insult used today

Wait, did you just categorize the church as ironic?? The Catholic Church?!? Naaaawwwwww. They'd never be ironic. The Catholic Church is a bastion of anti-irony in this increasingly evil world!!! That's why the pope has servants and gold palaces, and poor people across the world have practically nothing!

Ok, I can't hold in the laughter anymore

Man, and to think they preach the word of Jesus everyday... They should get real. Jesus would be ashamed.

interesting... well its more than just about sex... my boyfriend and i dont have sex right now, its just very intimate. i really just like him, im not sex-crazed... thats often harder for people to accept... they dont ever want PDA's or anything that hints that youre together... it sux, but thats just the way it usually is.

Haha touche ... perhaps I should have specified that it would be an additional irony added to the multitudes already in the irony bank. If it was proven tomorrow that homosexuality was purely genetics, the church would probably admit the fact that it was wrong in the year 2500 ... and then grant pardons to all the people they excommunicated for the past 500 years for thinking as such

from the many gay people i know i will say it can be both. Some of the guys I know are born gay, thats the way they feel and have allways felt and they are comfortable with that, they are usually the very cool ones. Then there are the ones that have switched over, they tend to be a little weirder, generally very attention seeking and have many complexes, and some excuse as to why they are gay now. I dont want it to sound like generalisation Im omly basing this on people i know.

I generally don't get involved in these conversations that much, but I felt a need to respond to this comment:

I appreciate the stand, Swamper, but I think this a weak point.

Look at any social group, for the sake of ease, think of what your group of friends was like in HS. Everyone had their own mannerisms, pronunciation style, and so on; but did you ever notice that certain phrases, certain ways of saying things, pronunciation in general, dress, etc. would 'catch on'?

It's human nature to adopt things that we associate with positive events/people, or even things that we're regularly exposed to.

Thus, you have the gay community (a concept I'm not big on personally, but some feel the need... ) where gay people hang out together all the time doing 'gay' things, and voila, you have a 'gay' set of mannerisms and way of speaking.

I could also add that I think it's a form of 'advertisement'. Think about it, as a gay person how else are you going to identify a potential mate from a distance? Unlike the convenient straight world where you can usually assume someone you're interested in is the same sexual pref the gay person has to assume the opposite.

Thus, another reason for a stereotypical behaviour to catch on.

The main issue in this thread is one that gives me a headache even considering. I identify myself as gay, but I also believe that everyone has a basic sexual response system that's capable of responding to people of either gender.

Girls of interest have been few and far between for me, but they've definitely been there. I still identify myself as gay just because it's much easier than giving the lengthy 'You'd be the lucky 1 in 100 person' to interested females, but sexuality is a complicated thing.

I think nature and nurture play almost equal factors in determining how you end up. Nature gives a base starting point, but life can swing that base really far in either direction depending on the environment you live in, the experiences you have as a child, and so on down the line.

besides i dont find anything wrong with being gay... im oriented that way. i like guys! haha..

Cortex... interesting thoughts. For the nurture concept i can only go by what i have personally experienced and i dont feel like my sexuality was ever influenced by outside forces, except when i myself have chosen conform to the ambitions and molds of society. I still believe that nurture is possible, for i know people can mold themselves and i know there there is no permanency to anything in this world.
