umm, i wouldnt consider mauro picotto progressive... his shit is more like tech-trance in my opinion... i'd say anything by digweed is progressive... and whoever said, "using minimal patterend melody" to describe progressive is dead wrong!!! dude, listen to some digweed sets carefully and you'll hear how many different samples go into each track/mix...

LoL. I give you credit for boldly stating your opinion mate! however, i beg to differ, as i am sure a lot of other would agree: Mauro Picotto IS PROGRESSIVE HIMSELF. I believe he is changing the face of progressive trance/techno.

Who do we think sets the boundaries and genres of techno music as a whole? the recording industry, i believe, and the artists who make the music. How would we find out what kind of music is what? By the labels of genre written on the compilation CD's.
I have yet to see a digweed or Bedrock CD say "Progressive Mix", although i have seen numerous Picotto CD's labeled as such. This does not mean that Digweed isn't good. It doesn't have to be "progressive" to be good. I consider Digweed "trance" music. Basically if the song has a beginning, a middle, and an end, then its NOT progressive.
I've seen DJ Mark Ski's, DJ CAffine's, DJ Gary D.'s, and the Technodrome CD's, etc. etc. etc. all either labeled or TITLED "Progressive Mix." ... and its all the hard tunes you hear Picotto playing in his sets . (here i use Picotto for reference b/c most of the other guys i've mentioned no one has ever heard of....).
Now whether its called Progressive Trance or Progressive Techno (there is another debate going on about this), i have no idea. On all my CDs (i actually buy instead of Napstering), it varies. some say prog. techno, some say prog. trance, but they all sound the same.

That's what I mean about it being very hard to pinpoint genres. Artists will take liberties with defining what style their music is to make it sound more cutting edge, or trendier.

Personally, according to my own ideas about what progressive is, Picotto is not a progressive artist. He is original, that's for sure, and it's beyond my talents to try and assign a genre to him, but he certainly isn't progressive in my opinion.

Progressive music is far more subtle. If it's overly loud, pumping, fast, melodious or anything like that, chances are it ain't progressive. Progressive music is quite dry - like any good wine, you can only learn to appreciate it with time.

lol.. some of the bullshit u guys come out with in the 'what is prog' threads is unbeleivable... sasha & digweed are both pretty much founding fathers of progressive trance as we know it today. PvD/Oakie/Push have never been prog, its epic/uplifting. MIKE (same bloke diff name as Push) sometimes does the prog stormers (gotta have it). Picotto has his own sound that has derived from techno and progressive mixed. prog is definatly not just 'the hard stuff' (whoever sed that needs his ears syringing)...

truth is NO-ONE can put their finger directly on what prog is (ive sed this before many times) cuz its all so different. Max Graham plays prog, Lucien Foort, Sandra Collins, Sasha, Joy Kitikonti (but he wanders from genre to genre), Timo Maas... they all play prog but they all play a different sound of prog... Max Graham plays more uplifting thumping prog, Lucien Foort the grinding hard prog, sandra collins the highly emotional stuff with uplifting hints, sasha the dreamier easy prog, joy kitikonti the funkier jumpy prog trance, and timo maas the dirty prog...

theres no point in trying to describe it.. just go and hear it.

Most of the stuff championed by digweed, sasha etc is dull and boring, I said MOST.

DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THE CORSTEN'S, TIESTO'S, TANDU'S, FLUTLICHT'S, COSMIC GATE, RANK 1 ,ETC ETC ETC will make bad progressive styled tunes?

YOU KNOW THEY'LL PUT THE CURRENT uk, u.s. producers to shame.


They will raise the bar on progressive tunes.

a groundbreaking tune, very original and fresh and DAMN GOOD. AND PROGRESSIVE IN STYLE.

it all comes down to this:

most of you just keep labeling and labeling, the fact is STYLES will always criss cross and who the f*ck cars if it does.

My goodness, stop trying to label and segregate tunes and accept the fact that it's just simply a style.

a good progressive tune can be very very very SATISFYING.

so no matter what style a trance tune falls under, as long as it's good and MATURE that I'm all for it.

firstly.. 3 times? o..k..

secondly... 'moving forward', 'modern' and 'without strict disipline' is the true definition of progressive.

a progressive tune can be melodic (mad dogs - better make room (james holden remix)). a progressive tune can be uplifting (Conjure One - Redemption (Dead Sea Mix)).. but all in a completely different way from the conventional styles of trance.

oh and u still think the prog trance at the moment is boring... u havent heard lucien foort & chums lately then have u? if u ask me its the uplifting trance that is boring at the moment. ppl move on to progressive because they are a bit tired of the predictability in ur average uplifting/epic tune, things happen in prog music quite randomly (as in noises and stuff) and i give much more respect for the prog producers because they have to think up an original format for the song, and experiment with sounds... uplifting producers all too often follow the bare beat > build > breakdown > build up > climax & hi beat > slow breakdown etc etc format that has been usecd for years.

this is wghy i respect tiesto over the other dutch legends, he's the only one of the 3 that has had he bollocks to try something a bit different. AvB & Ferry are stuck with the same tunes they were making 2 years ago re-arranged...

like i say all the damn time...progressive is music with a direction....whether its progressive rock, or house, or trance, techno...etc etc. its not just looped phrases and riffs with cheesey beats over and over again...its an ever evolving sound that keeps your ears glued to the speakers, with different breakdowns and buildups....thats progressive, by god! hehheheehe

People please!, I can understand what you are getting it but there is NO WAY that either PVD or Picotto are progressive, granted they may play some progressive tracks, but as Sander Kleinenberg said in a recent DJ mag - progressive is an attitude - it is not about what records you play but the way you play them - I consider myself a totally progressive DJ and will play anything from a Peace Division/Halo & Hipp-E style production through Deep Dish and as close to trance as some Bedrock productions or Oliver Lieb - it seems that people on this board seem to have got the wrong end of the stick a bit - the tracks you have named are in part progressive, but only the trance end of things - listen to Sasha or Digweed and you will see that yes, they have played more tranced out tracks (Sasha says 'Trance with a smalle t') BUT, especially for digweed, this is not all - there is the whole warmup situation, more groove oriented records that aren't about breakdowns or building things up - listen to CD1 from either Global Underground Hong Kong or Los Angeles and you will see what I mean.

And there is no way that Carte Blanche is progressive!, maybe the origin mix as essentially they are a progressive artist (but very much the trance end of the spectrum) - but such a breakdown and drumroll is far too obvious and commercial for progressive DJs to be spinning (and don't slag me for this, I do own a copy!)
