I do agree with you, that the USA truly became a superpower at the end of the second world war. I also agree with the decline (if it ever comes) won't be sudden. But, one must remember that the conditions in which Greece and Rome fell were totally different.

Some of the US companies would retreat to that area as well, since the opressive religious regime in the US would not allow them to function normally. That would result in a radical decline of funds, and soon wheat exports would not be enough for the american economy to sustain itself. Farmers would largely resort to the opium plantations instead, as wheat farms would not generate enough money to sustain their large christian families. Also, a growing anger would spur in people, an anger which the radical clerics would direct against the EU and the UAS as the main source of evil. A new wave of anti-muslim sentiment would arise, and the masses would want to get rid of arabic influence over the american christian lands. A new radical terrorist organisation, called PNAC (Project for the New American Century) would rise out of the anonimity, and would start attacking european and arabic targets worldwide. In the meanwhile, the rest of the world would be astounded by the barbarian behaviour of the PNAC, like destroying centuries old statues of 4 american presidents in South Dakota, largest presidential statues in the world. Anyway, after some major terrorist attacks, the EU, the UAS, Russia, and China would enter a coallition and attack the US. The US army would no longer present a problem, as their nuclear weapons became unusable due to lack of maintainance. Soon, after a quick war, the US would be split into 4 sectors, the Alascan sector (Russia), the Western sector (China), the Southeastern sector (UAS) and the Northwestern sector (EU). Soon, those sectors would officially become territories of the new superpowers, and the name USA would no longer exist in history books.

ok, so for all you that believe the US will *fall* or that its current status is based on debt, what does that mean to the other countries of the world if the US crashes? especially those that have lent to the states, and those that the states lend to? it wont be pretty...


and as for Russia being a current superpower- i think everyone in Moscow wants to believe that and string it along as long as possible, but the fact of the matter is:

-during the height of the USSR, the Soviets couldnt even take Finland!
-and the current difficulties in the Causasus eschew any aspirations of control and power within Russia and its government|

Are you referring to the ill-fated Soviet invasion of Finland? I wouldn't necessarily call that the height of their power. Remember, it took the Russians over 20 million casualties before their industrial and military might was revamped enough to take on the Germans. And I'm sure that the 1945 Red Army could have easily squashed Finland with its superior firepower and excellent Generals.

Well surely the conditions were different.. I mean 1500 years does make a difference at some point ..

Sorry, what I was trying to get at was that at the height of Rome's power, your average citizen would probably have looked at their empire in the same way that someone today might look at the US in terms of their scale of power in the world.

For some reason I have this notion that the decline of the US Empire would occur somewhere within a span of 85 years .. most likely along the lines of what Drug_Tito had said.

I think something like that happened to France just after the Russian Revolution of 1917. They had invested heavily into the Tsarist empire which basically defaulted on all loans after the Boshelvik movement there. But I'm sure that obviously the US economy collapsing which cause a much greater impact on a much more massive scale. The thing is most people here probably don't view it as a crash, moreso a gradual decline. Or again something along the lines of what Drug_Tito said ..
