Sony laptots are insane!
10Gb Thomson Lyra player here.
I've been looking at the Archos Jukebox FM Recorder 20GB. 'Bout half the cost of the iPod, can view text files, play Doom even, and of course play your music. No software needed to transfer, just plug it in and a new drive appears in windows; drag and drop. Better and longer lasting battery setup than the iPod; and I think the iPod battery is not removeable. Archos you just remove your NiHM batteries if you need to, and replace with fresh ones (eg. you need longer than 10hrs play in a row).
Unfortunately I can't get a hold of the Archos in Australia for any reasonable price (ie Australian retail price is twice and then some the American price, and none of the on-line US stores ship it to Aus). So I'm thinking if I can't get the best MP3 player then I'll settle for an even cheaper MP3/CD player. I'm lookin' at the Panasonic SL-SV550 CD/MP3 player IF I can find it for sale in Aus - so far no luck.
I would consider getting a solid state MP3 player if I wasn't travelling and wanting all my music with me. And if I was getting one of those I'd be lookin' at the iRivers - they look the goods.

Slim X is a piece of shit. I have the old 150 and I tried the new one. Batteries don't last long, shitty sound quality, not loud enough, can't play cd's that are just a little scratched. And it's also too big by todays standards. I think my next portable would be a netmd. I tried my brother's Sharp netmd and it had perfect sound quality and also very loud.

sweet, but too expensive
i'm gonna buy one when it costs $50
think i'll prob end up buyin the ipod when i save the money up over the summer, is it worth it buyin the 30GB one r 15GB one? (r is it 10GB?)
so is it decided, that in fact it was a good purchase (taking personal req in to account)?
I just bought a 30gig iPod the other day and it is amazing!! The best thing I found is that you can scroll through a live set so quickly and find your favourite part. I would buy the 30 gig because I think it comes with more stuff then the 15 gig like a cradle, carying case and remote. As far as memory goes I uploaded 40 live sets right away and that already took 7 gigs, so it fills up fast.
i got the 20 gb ipod for 300 dollars
mm ipod
now i need an itrip
30 gig gen 3 ipod? thats like 600 dollars
LOL

I have a stupid question. Do these players play 192kbps?
they do play 192
mp3 > MD
after looking on a review site, there still isn't an mp3 player retailing that i would buy, especially at those prices
the i-pod has an unreplaceable battery....so does the zen
i-pod is a rip off, zen is only usb 1.1
that archos thing, one ugly looking, bulky, motherfucka
The 30GB iPod is the best. Is there anything else out there that holds that much? I haven't seen any. It is expensive but if your a big music fan like myself then the purchase is completely justifiable.
why would you need a replacable battery are you crazy, it charges by firewire and it also comes with an external charger for sockets

30 GIG
Man get the 30 Gig cuz you can hold more than just music.
Besides I think its awesome that you can carry over 10 days of music...cuz you never know what your in the mood for.

I havent seen the interface for the zen but if its anything less than the iPod than its no comparison.
There is no comparison to the iPod. Its outstanding.
The only issue with it i have is how it orders tracks - u gotta make up playlists for everything u want played in any type of order - think of them like folders and file listings, coz the ipod doesn't do folders, it just throws everything onto the disk, and relies on the id3 tag to sort stuff...
