Any of you in this thread or the related one on DI that find yourselves insulting others because of their choice of words to classify a music should be ashamed of yourselves. The fact that you have to call out others mistakes for personal amusement and gain is even more childish. What does it mean to any of you what people call music? How does it hurt any of you? What makes all of you the high and mighty music gods?

And try to keep the word noob out of the music scene. Its not some geeky MMORPG. The amount of threads you have posted on has no effect in making you have any 1337 status in the EDM scene, it only makes you a geek.

Grow up.

^^ I agree, well said.

The genre police need to find new careers. It's starting to get boring.

hehe, thank you.

Im just entirely bored of this argument. it comes up at least once a week on various boards.

Posted by TOR on Jun-25-2003 07:39:

what difference does it make if a track is techno, trance, house or whatever?! the music is the only thing that matters, not how a track fits into a certain category!

categorization leads to generalization, which is the cause of many disagreements and wars, and not only on the web..

Posted by 13am on Jun-25-2003 07:44:

So if someone walks up to you and says "it's day time" when you know it's obviously night time, you're not gonna disagree?

I was not bashing or hating or what ever you wanna call it. I was simply trying to educate. Then I saw that these guys are too ignorant to be educated, so I turned to humor. If you find anything wrong with that, then

Again, if your kid calls ice cream "crackers", wouldn't your try to help him out?

yes of course, because this leads to a misunderstanding.. obviously calling techno trance is similar, but that shouldn't be the case.. in my opinion, if someone wishes to define "a certain type" of music, he should do that via an artist, instead of trying to fit various artists into a certain category.. because, as i said, this leads to generalization.. as a consequence, you get people saying "trance sucks", whilst there is undoubtedly one or two tracks they like amongst the huge variety of trance tracks.. in a way, it is necessary to define the things around you, but when it comes to music genres, i think nothing good comes out of it..

Actually, I look at it as, why am I going to waste my time beating to death an already dead topic.

And you did not choose to turn to humor, you turned to being an elitist prick. I think your words went, "Whatever... be ignorant if you must. Just know that the rest of the community is laughing at you."

It started with your poor attitude on DI, and when you didnt get the results you were looking for there you decided to carry the post over to TA where you continued your mockery.

Grow up dood, your shit dont fly with me.

This wouldn't be an issue if we were merely talking about an alternative term for trance (i.e. "post" versus "mail"), but techno is an established genre of its own these days, independent of trance. Maybe around 1990 you could have used the terms interchangibly, but not anymore. This isn't trampling over people for calling something by a different name, this is correcting a mistake in terminology that has a legitimate reason. Techno denotes a specific form of music, while trance describes another. There's little crossover and so the terms shouldn't be used in place of one another either. This is simple precision of language and respect for cultural lingo.

In other words, someone who goes to I Love Techno should know what to expect: not trance.

Now look who's bashing. No matter how many times you tell me to "grow up", I still stand strong behind my opinion. To me, it's a matter of respect. If you like something (trance) so much that you join a forum (or two) just to talk about it, at least get the fuckin name right. The fact remains; trance is a genre of music, techno is another genre of music. And when peeps generalize to the point where they call all types of EDM "techno", it's disrespectful to the music's actual genre. Trance is not house, progressive is not drum n bass, and techno is certainly not the generalized name for all of the above.

Again, go reread the DI thread. I started simply trying to educate. But when ignorance is so deep that its impenetrable, what else can you do but laugh about it?

PS. Is it a coincidence that the only person defending the DI forums is a DI member?

Actually its not coincidence, i am just the only person from DI thats dumb enough to share a board with people like you. I think the flames you received on DI spoke for themselves.

You talk about respect. LOL. And i assume, "Whatever... be ignorant if you must. Just know that the rest of the community is laughing at you." is a perfect example of your being respectful.

I think I speak for the rest of DI when I say your attitude is not welcomed there. Your not a positive member of the community and your input is not appreciated.

If the only thing you have to say on DI is negative why do you bother to post there? And I didnt know I was defending DI forums, I thought I was defending people from your insults.

This is the last response from me on this topic cuz its a dead topic! whatever...whocares right?

I saw Dave Clarke at Atomic Jam last month. Most people that talk about 'Techno' have not heard any stuff done by Dave or Carl Cox or any other techno producer. Now if someone starts calling Alice DJ or DJ sammy techno they really need to download something like 'Dave Clarke - The Wolf' so they can see the difference. I'm not saying I like techno because I don't, I think it's shite. But the people who do must get pissed off at being lumped in with the trance or, god forbid, the euro dance crowd.

On the other hand I can't tell the difference between Rap and Hip-Hop so someone must explain that one to me.

n00bs are building up faster than you can possibly teach
ranting about it is as effective as honking at someone that cut you off in the highway and giving him a really angry face

thank you, you just proved my point! people generalize and feel the need to distinguish themselves.. and the result? well, i underlined it..

It's just to prove a point. Calling trance, techno, isn't necessarily wrong.

I'm just sick of the elitist attitude displayed by some people over here. You need to embrace those who listen to the same music, even if they don't understand all the different genres instead of bashing them for being noobs. I mean christ, 13am you registered THIS month and already you're stepping up on your soapbox acting like you're better than everyone else.

Do you scream at someone when you're trying to teach them something? I would hope not. If you're hellbent on everyone understanding the intricacies of EDM genres, and it bothers you this much, why don't you calmly go about educating them, instead of making your font as large as possible?

Then to point out that everyone at the TA Forum is laughing at them? That's just childish. I'd much rather hang out with a bunch of noobs than a group of elitist assholes. Maybe I'll start calling everything techno so then you can take your angst out on me.

This is the second time someone mentioned that quote. Do either of you realize he was being facetious? Or would that be too high a level of thinking from someone from a community that, as we all know, consists entirely of "noobs"?
