-- The good old credit card fraud...

I always find it funny how paranoid people are about on-line fraud, but never about more common and very simple credit card fraud. How many people could easily rip off your number? The kids in the store never looks at your receipts? Anyone working with any sort of sales software has access to thousands of card numbers. Picking up numbers on-line has to be about the hardest method of finding a credit card to rip off.

Well credit card numbers aren't actually fully printed on receipts (for obvious security reasons!)so the 'kids' can't get your number that way. If paying by credit card in a shop it's safe so long as you make sure you have sight of your card the whole time, make sure thay give it back to you ASAP!

Yeah, dumper diving has been around for as long as those clunky old credit card impression things. I went to a hair dresser once and that's all they had. I had to explicitly ask for the carbon sheet.

There's some pretty cleverly done frauds doing the rounds at the moment, including a very well done one for stealing people's eBay accounts. The email is well written and constructed, and the URL is quite cleverly done... they made a HREF to their URL with the text as an eBay.com official URL.

I'm just waiting for someone to get clever with javascript and hide it even better...

shit yeah, since paypal are owned by ebay now, the same thing is doing the rounds for paypal accounts.

Scary how close they get to the real thing - with official URLs, text and everything.

Hmmmm seems i recall being young and stupid once upon a time too. My first time i'd found a pornsite and was in a world of glee indeed until i saw the old enter your credit card no to access the rest of this site, we won't charge you a cent. it's just to verify your over 18 so being bright i grabbed moms and voila! i had a 100$ cred charge on her card to some x rated porn site and i killed two birds with one stone, i got busted and i had to pay the 100 bucks.

I have never and will never make another online purchase of any kind since then. I'll pay in cash or with eftpos but credit cards suck AsXs0r.

I should know, i used to be a credit card salesman lol!!

Okies, I did'nt want to start a new thread, and since its related to this topic, I might as well post it in here.

Anyways:

I'd like to nominate myself for DUMBASS OF THE WEEK award.

The story as it follows:

So I got my new credit on Tuesday, got it activated and so forth - the first thing I done: VINYL SHOPPING (on the net). It was only like $80 worth. So everything went fine until today I checked up the credit status through NetBank. Apparently I've spent $600 yeseterday - so, being very paranoid after the first credit card incident, I rang up the centre and asked them what was going on. They said I spent $600 yesterday - I said I did'nt. So I cancelled my credit account AGAIN. I was thinking WHY??!?!?! Surely this can't be right - why does all this bad shit happen to me.
Until, suddenly, a light bulp flashed above my head but then shattered into 8.23 million pieces. I DID SPEND $600 yesterday!!! 2 bottles of wine! ARRRGGGHHHH! I rang up the centre again asking if it was possible to cancel the cancellation LOL But it was too late! The lady operator must have thought I was a dumbass!

ARRGGGHH!! So now I have to wait for yet another card due to my forgetfulness. My memory isnt as good as it used to be. (I wonder why ) ...

So the conclusion to this silly saga: Tiz good to be cautious but not too good to be paranoid! and no more parties for me for a while...

but paranoia got u 2 free bottles of wine?

Posted by [ groovypants ] on Jul-11-2003 05:51:

Paranoia @ its extreme:

I brought the wine through the phone so it wouldnt have been shipped out to me until mid next week, the payment was still pending, so I cancelled the account before it even got finalized, so I'll have to re-buy the wine again next week.

I wish! But there's certainlly nothing quite like a glass of red wine with some Brahms playing in the background

Escee: Is you a wine buff? The 2 bottles of wine were CA Henchki: Hill of Grace - 1998. $272 a bottle (bloody bargin)

Off topic: I was @ HMV Sydney City store yesterday, they were selling GATECRASHER EXPERIENCE 3 CD SET FOR $9.99!!! THATS RIGHT! OMFG, I had to triple check the price to see if I was dreaming or not. And they have stacks of them! Their vinyls were pretty expensive though, think I saw PVD - Nothing But You for around $20 BUT yeah, even though its a below average CD - the 3rd chillout disc is definitely worth the $9.99 !!!!!

[errr, you can tell I'm very bored @ work right now ]

Posted by Pointy on Jul-11-2003 08:01:

We had a 83 Grange or sometime round then once. Fucken dirty shit, i opened it up before goin out one satday nite, had a whiff, had a sip, then passed it on to the rubbish bin. Never will i touch expensive wine again

I saw them last weekend. they also had Gatecrasher Resident Transmission for $9.99...
the sad thing is I couldn't afford to buy any of them because I had spent my money on vinyl and clothes

Posted by [ groovypants ] on Jul-11-2003 12:15:

Wowzers! You guys thought my wine was expensive (I got them @ wholesale price - they usually retail for around $400 a bottle) - Pointy here has owned us all! Penfolds Grange 1983 is easily around $1000 a bottle!

pointy, that bottle went to the bin u said?

wine + brahms, which i assume is classical music.
groovy, you are too too classy!

Posted by Pointy on Jul-12-2003 01:20:

Meh..story was fabricated a lil for the sake of comedy. But it was our whole family n a few close friends who drank it. Tasted like shit - now all wine tastes like shit to me, but this was off. Foul foul stuff, finished the bottle n threw it out.

If any of you have an old bottle of grange, dont bother drinkin it, just hold on to it n sell it, you'll be kickin yourselves if you drink it - we are, but we still got another bottle from 88.

Sorry to bump this thread but i just has $600 charged to my credit card from this company:

WP-DAN HU NORTH RYDE GBR

Never ever heard of them but i'm guessing it was perhaps through Chemical Records cos i think it was in Great Britain. However, i have also bought from Juno and some other places but not recently. Just a warning to the rest of you out there!

Then on the way home from enquiring about it at the bank i get a fkn $185 fine for talking on mobile while driving!!!

And then i miss my train!!!

Hey, so did you end up getting all your money back??

Posted by [ groovypants ] on Aug-04-2003 06:32:

Yes, it all went smoothly - the transaction was still pendng and wasnt fully processed cause it was such a large amount! So yeah, the bad thing was that I had to cancel the card [cause theres probably like 23523 hackers out there that have the cards details] and get reissued another one [which takes a week - farking hassle] ...

mr_stamper: cancel your credit card now and tell your bank to send you another one with a new number - who knows who's got those details @ this very moment! They may be plotting to buy a USD$4K speed boat!!!
