Re: Obligatory Post Halcyon thread
This was my second visit to Altitude/Halcyon at Gas (I missed the second one), and the high standards certainly remain.
It was great seeing the tranceaddicts again, I hadn't seen many of you in a while and it was good to have met a few new ones too.
This time there were a few differences from the first one I attended.
The main difference was there were 2 large circular screeens on the front wall on the left and the right, and a rectangular screen in between for the laser animation. A computer wsa placed in the middle of the dance floor for controlling the animation.
It's been a long time since I've actually seen laser animation ata dance music event. My first time was at Age of love 4 on 11 December 1998... they were showing some very impressive full-colour 3D animation sequences, one memorable one was of pac man going around chomping away at rows of pills! My next laser animation experience was at Transmission Hyperspace in February 1999, they showed something that looked like flying over a futuristic world. They were both at the Metro theatre. So it was good to see this kind of thing again. It would have been even better if full colour lasers were used, and if more complex and visually striking animation was shown... the Asteroids game was funny but the novelty wore off after a short while. Still, it would be good to see laser animation again in future events.
There were fewer lasers than in the first event at Gas, though I guess the laser animation and the 3 eye candy screens compensated for that.
The music was brilliant. There aren't many (or any?) other events that I've been to in which the entire night continously satisfied my undying hunger and thirst (addiction) for tasty trance. Many tracks I recognised but couldn't identify, plus many more that were new to me, which I wish I could hunt down.
Some tracks I recognised that haven't had a mention yet:
Riva - Love is the healer
Plastic boy - Live another life
Above and beyond - Far from in love
Scott bond & Solar stone - The 3rd earth
Live another life is an excellent track, I went crazy and had to tell people how much I loved this track when it was played. It has the trademark quality that you'd expect from Dirk Dierickx (M.I.K.E.).
What was the track played before Delerium - Silence?
I think in future there should be someone who writes down every track that is played throughout the night. I'm certain that most of us would agree. djway, is that what you are planning to do?

I was feeling very tired on the night, after another draining week working under pressure, so my decision to attend was in the air until the last moments. I'm glad I did! |

You've probably heard that in a group of about two dozen people there is a high chance that at least two of the people have the same birthday. If you've ever wondered why this is so, keep reading. The calculation of probabilities where multiple events are involved can be a daunting task. So, this particular poser has been reduced to a relatively simple calculation and is based on the following relationships: the total probability of all possible events occurring is equal to one (1) it is possible to calculate the probability of a particular event (e. g., no occurrence) subtracting the calculated probability from one gives the probability of at least one occurrence So, in order to calculate the probability that, among a group of people, at least two of them have the same birthday, all we have to do is calculate the probability that none of them have the same birthday and subtract that from one (1). Start with one person in the room, we'll call her Amanda. The probability that her birthday is unique among all the people in the room is one; after all, Amanda is the only person in the room! Now, let Brenda enter the room. The probability that Brenda's birthday is different from Amanda's is 364/365 (we'll ignore leap years in all of this) since there are 364 available days other than Amanda's birthday. With just two people in the room, the probability that they do not share a birthday is 1 x (364/365) or 0.997 and the probability that they share a birthday is 1 - 0.997 or 0.003. In walks Carla. In order for Carla's birthday to be different from either Amanda or Brenda, it must occur on one of the remaining 363 days. The probability that Carla does not share a birthday with either Brenda or Amanda is 1 x (364/365) x (363/365) or 0.992. And, the probability that at least two of the three people share a birthday is 1 - 0.992 or 0.008. We can continue this calculation as each new person enters the room and this is shown graphically below. Shown in red is the probability that no two people share the same birthday {1x(364/365)x(363/365)x ...} for 2 to 50 people. The green line is the probability that at least two people share a birthday. You can see that with 23 people in the room, the green curve has reached a probability of about 0.5 (0.507). This means there is a 50% chance (even odds) among a group of 23 people that two of them have the same birthday |

What can i say? How good was halcyon? I had high expectations coming from the reviews I've been getting from the ITMers, but halcyon surpassed all my expectations and what a nite it was. It was my first time there and I'm sure it won't be my last.
Romp and I share the same birth year as well!
What is the probability of meeting someone with the same date of birth (ignore time of birth)?
The current world rate of births per day is approximately 360000.
The current world population is approximately 6300000000.
Assume:
Current rate of births per day is the same as the rate of births per day in the year that I was born;
Those who were born on the same date as me are still alive.
then the probability that I meet someone born on the same date as me is approximately 360000/6300000000 = 0.005714%
Now focusing on Australia:
There were 230000 people born in the same year of my birth.
Therefore the average number of people born per day was approximately 230000/365 = 630.137.
The current population of Australia is approximately 19900000.
Assuming that the people who were born on the same date as me are still alive and have not left Australia, the probability that I meet one of them if I were to choose from all Australians is 630.137/19900000 = 0.00317%.
it was good to see Sydney people catching the cd's which were thrown out with their hands... Melbourne people tend to catch them with their head
Had a great fun night. Was really good catching up with everyone and partying.
Till next time.
Damn guys, could you get me any more pumped for this weekend?
Would telling you ill be there, make you more pumped????
