watch out for trogditus
"trogdor strikes again"
Even if most of STDs are cureable, I heard that once you're a carrier you're a carrier for life! Can someone confirm that for me?
well, for the second time today i will post a little medical knowledge for that ass...
(i'm a 2nd year medical student at Penn, so take it for what its worth)..
i didnt read the whole thread cause its long, but here's my two cents..
HPV is indeed a virus (human papilloma virus) that is extremely common and somewhat benign in men. it is also linked with cervical cancer in women, hence the american m.a. recommendation for pap smears yearly or every two years...the displasia caused by the virus can be seen on the slide and caught early
over 90% of the population is infected with the herpes simplex virus. for some people they never get sores. some people get sores once. and some people get sores recurrently (10% of those infected). once infected you have the virus for life, like any virus, though it may no longer have any effect as your body eliminates any proliferation as it learns to produce antibody against the virus. it lives in ganglia (nerve cell aggregates) near the site of infection. there are different strains and you can have one oral strain and one genital strain.
the term Sexually Transmitted Disease can refer to anything that is transmitted sexually. the reason you cant get HIV through saliva is not about antibiotic properties of saliva, its because there are no blood cells (like CD8+ T cells which carry the virus) in saliva or ever seeing saliva, so viral particles are never released in saliva. you CAN get HIV from oral sex, but probably less likely from kissing unless both partners have oral abrasions. it is much more difficult for a man to contract HIV during standard male-female intercourse but does occur through 'friction abrasions', so its possible.
some STDs, like Trick (trichinosis) are rarer than others and are fungal. others, like syphilis, chlamydia, gonnerrhea, are bacterial. both types can be treated with antibiotics and the bug is gone. viral stds, Hepatitities (A through E, though B and C are the most common sexually related), HIV, HPV, herpes, epstein-barr (EBV also causes mono) are typical viral entities that simply run a course in the body and are 'handled' by the immune system and possible antiviral treatment. there is no cure, in the sense that a drug will make them go away, your body must do this. it is very difficult for your body to deal with HIV because it is well protected, constantly changing, and attacks the cells which attack it (T Cells). the only way to be safe from viruses is through vaccination, of which i think only Hep B is a possibility. there are many other infections of the urinary tract, etc that can pass through sexual contact as well as other contact
as far as what a disease is, what a syndrome is, what an illness is, etc, those are medical terms whose exact definitions are actually quite precise, but in lay terms they mean very general things. i dont think it matters how you call illness.
my advice to you (and all my patients) is to wear a condom EVERYTIME. it is the most effective way to prevent STDs. (those of you think abstinence is, you are incorrect, because it doesnt work, people have sex despite their convictions and stastically it works worse than condoms). wearing a condom does not prevent transmission of disease, but using a latex or polyurethane condom does reduce the risk significantly. be safe with who you choose as partners. some people have alot of sex, some people dont. calling them whores or dirty or whatever doesnt stop your friend from having sex, but telling him to use a condom will stop the sex from being as high risk.
not using a condom just once is like never using one ever. thats my two cents. this is getting long. if you any specific questions, ask them, but briefly. hope this helped
