Alcohol 'helps you lose weight'
August 4, 2003

FOR years dieters have been told alcohol is one of the first things they
should cut out if they want to lose weight.

But research by a Melbourne team has turned that advice on its head.

It found having up to four drinks a day for men and two for women may
help melt the kilograms.

John Dixon, a senior research fellow at Monash University and the Alfred
hospital, and colleagues based their findings on observations of
severely obese patients who had bariatric, or weight-loss, surgery.

Dr Dixon said histories of the patients' alcohol consumption before and
after surgery confirmed previous evidence light to moderate drinking had
beneficial effects on cholesterol levels.

But the team also found something that has begun to emerge over the past
eight years: moderate drinkers seem to have a reduced risk of developing
type 2, or adult onset diabetes. This was probably related to the effect
alcohol had on improving insulin sensitivity, which appeared to aid
weight loss as well as protect against diabetes, he said.

"Most weight-loss programs have found diabetics have problems losing
weight," Dr Dixon said. "After surgery, those who were drinking small
amounts of alcohol were losing weight."

The report, to be published in the journal Australian Family Physician,
advises doctors they should no longer tell obese patients trying to lose
weight to give up having a glass or two of wine with dinner.

He said wine had a relatively low kilojoule content and tended to be
burned immediately rather than being stored as fat.

The problem with drinking and weight gain was mainly because of
associated snacking or loss of inhibition leading to over-eating, Dr
Dixon said.

The results did not mean teetotallers should drink to become slim.

that's cool. i have heard of teh benefits of red wine. i hav to wonder how biased taht study was though. but beer is bad in that it does slow down your metabolism. i still maintain that excessive drinking makes you fat, based on experience.

the freshman 15 thing is sorta true. basically from my experience this is how it works. coming up to college people party more then they ever had before and eat more fast food or junk food then before. the result is then a weight gain for a lot of people. if you workout a lot you don't need to worry that much, but really the effect is quite visible in the people around you. just picture the good looking girl in the room next to you...so popular...so bitchy...she will be putting on the weight from all that beer she's been drinking.

I'd watch out for dorm food. Its high in carbs (very easy to make a lot of), and a lot of high school students don't have that amount of carbs in their diet. Un burned carbs lead to fat. I gained like 10 pounds (I AM a guy tho), but I started working out and I avoided the dorm food, and I'm thinner than I was before I went to school. *shrug*

I should be Co-Captain. The captain has to worry about adminstrative details and what not. Ill be the NCO kind of keep-it-together guy the rallies the troops and gets the serious drink on.

The survey is accurate

plus, the results are really biased because this wasn't a random sample - only cornell students were sampled.

Har Har that's hilarious... let me tell you I was a freshman last year and kind of got the gist of the freshman 15... It is certainly true at Cornell. In the fall the girls all worked out this summer or at least went outside, then the giant cloud descends over Ithaca and everyone hides under a poofy jacket, gets no exercise and gets hamemred all the time. Voila, freshman 15 manifest when it gets sunny enough to lose the jackets. I am watching a new freshman class go through it now ... they were so full of hope.

How rude of me ... I'm just verifying that the researchers at least drew a good conclusion from their data.
