is Total Recorder any good???

Posted by liquidmist2001 on Sep-11-2003 05:08:

@ brian...

hehe, i use sound forge cause cool edit causes my computer to freeze...can you tell me what settings i should be using... i like soundforge more than cool edit cuz it's simpler to configure...just my opinion

never tried total recorder... where can i get it?

I use a little freeware program I found called SoundRecorder on download.com. It records straight to mp3, so files are small, and the quality goes up to 128kbps. It works great with a Sound Blaster Live card. I found that recording through the Line In rather than the Mic jack works better.

Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

sounds like your using the microphone input, not the line input.

that's no good. the mic input is usually bandpassed for voice freuencies only and is WAY too sensitive for a line-level signal.

also, you really cant hook your decks up directly to your computer, unless your computer has a RIAA (eww evil acronym) compensated phono in (never seen such a thing!)

you need to connect your (mixers) record output to your soundboards LINE input, not mic in.

on topic: I use N-track studio. I dig it. It likes my Delta66 soundboard and isnt as hoggish as soundforge it seems. it's a good app. I also like CoolEdit.

Never been a fan of soundforge. Seems a bit bulky and it likes to crash, atleast on my system... seems to be popular so it's probably my PC config that's the problem!

as far as minidiscs go.. ugh. it's compressed audio, seems to like to color the sound on mixes. If your gonna go hardware, get a CDR deck or a DAT, you'll be much better off try a tascam DA30 if you want a really nice DAT deck

please help!!!

ok, so i have soundforge. I'm not sure if i have a soundcard line input...so i plugged it into my mic input...everything is maxed when i record...the voluem, bass, treble...all of it...what should i do? how do i find out if i have a line in into my sound card, and if not how hard would it be to get one put in??? i want to record myself, but i'm having so many problems.

i use cool edit pro 2.0... and the way i do it is i have an adapter that plugs onto the red and white cords, and i have a 10 foot cord goign from my mixer to my computer (in the same room) and it works great!

Doesn't really matter what program you use as long as you have decent quality sound card (built in Mobo audio is generally crap) and most importantly is getting the levels correct so you have plenty of volume without distorting/clipping.. I just use Goldwave.. it's good, and it's free and has small overhead so computer doesn't choke when recording at high sampling rates.. I have Soundforge and Cool Edit but I prefer to use Goldwave.. but if I change any of the settings I have to go back and readjust the levels to make sure I'm not into the red but that I'm getting plenty of volume.. that is the tricky part.. other than that I usually just record at the highest sampling rate and then downsample/compress (usually to MP3) for whatever purpose (ie is it going on regular CD or MP3 for my MP3 player). I have a Minidisc player which is really nice if my decks aren't next to my computer but otherwise I prefer to just jack straight into the computer for recording.

please help

ok, so i am on a laptop, and have no "line in" for my sound card, can i just use the mic? i knwo it's not as good quality, but is it possible to record a decent quality mix with it?? or am i f**ked?

also what do i need to mess with in order for everything not to be all maxed out...as in volume, treble, bass...i record, and everything is just full blown....

please help

I use Soundforge but I cant figure out how to record longer then an hour. For some reason, it will only record for like 59 min which I didnt find out till after a 3 hour set that I tried to record. Any body know if there is a setting somewhere that changes that. I looked everywhere and I couldnt find one.

Posted by liquidmist2001 on Sep-24-2003 00:40:

it just depends on the amount of room you have on your hard drive, and what sampling rate your recording at? at 32bit/96kHz, a 70min set could easily run ya a good 2-3 gigs... so just play around with the settings for a little bit, if you still need some help PM me.

also, unless you're already using soundforge 6.0, you might wanna consider upgrading

yes, i used to record with the mic jack until i figured out how to use the line in, it definetly wont sound as good, but you'll be able to hear the mixing and everything ok, it just sux cuz the mic jack doesn't record in stereo, it's in mono only...quality will be a little less than decent but tolerable.

as for playing around with the levels, depends on the way you like to mix...if you like to keep the crossfader in the middle and use the channel faders to mix, i suggest playing with the main volume and adjust the mic recording volume on your computer to be a little bit lower...if you mix traditionally, using just the crossfader, and adjusting the channel volumes just slightly, then i suggest trying to keep the channel volumes constant and using the gains to raise or lower the volume of the songs...

a good way to check is before you start recording, open up the program (i.e. soundforge 6.0) it'll show you the level at which the song is playing right now via the VU meter, just make sure that those levels stay in the green/yellow and very very very rarely go into the red, the instant you hit red means that you're maxing out the recorders ability and all the stuff you record is gonna be muffled...

hope that helps

MERiDiAN5i2 and brian and anyone else who says that their computer skips when using SoundForge 6 to record...

What are your PC specs? Are your CPU's not fast enough or is it RAM also?
