This isn't Yahoo Chat, please take the "hot" out of your name.

Already flooding here, not sure if it's due to the hurricane or not, but what a start to the week.

Coming from a tropical island, i know for a fact that the northeast is not prepared at all for a major hurricane like this one. Of course, the intensity of this monster will decrease as it moves northwards (these are not the 80 degree Farenheit waters of the Caribbean anymore ) , but still even a minor hurricane or tropical storm will fuck up this region. I live in a wooden house in CT, there's no way it can stand over 90 mph sustained winds, let alone a category 4 (that won't happen).

Oh shit, the memories of seeing everything destroyed, of all the trees in my neighborhood trampled in the floor side by side with roofs and all kinds of shit, of weeks without water and electricity, and especially that brutal sound that this monstercanes make. It's so amazingly terryfying. I will never forget Hugo (1989) and Georges (1998). Better be prepared if Isabel hits your town, this is no joke.

Supposed to creep along the side of the Eastern US... Final mapped location for the eye of the hurricane is Maryland (Washington D.C. to be exact). Course might change, though.

It shifted even closer to my town yet again...this is not good.

Good God... This is starting to look bad.

The outskirts of the hurricane are supposed to generate 70mph winds!

I just heard on the news that it will hit Toronto around Friday afternoon.. this city has been through so much shit this year: sars a couple of times, madcow, west nile, blackout.........

Posted by DaveSZ on Sep-16-2003 03:10:

It will only be a rain storm by the time it hits toronto.

The good news is that it's weaker now, but still a strong storm and hitting an area that's not used to hurricanes.

Posted by occrider on Sep-16-2003 03:11:

Yup ... the trailer trash in N and S Carolina are gonna get hit bad.

The inbred? Hehe ... nah I doubt lives would be lost. Only property which is going to suck. It should be downgraded to a force 3 storm by the time it hits. By then only the stupid are not going to take precautions.

Posted by Omegasox on Sep-16-2003 04:20:

Hmmm, it appears to be moving pretty damn slow. Hopefully it will partially dissipate by the time it reaches the mainland.

I've always been slightly interested in weather/meteorology. That sounds about right, as I heard that hurricane-force winds (that's at LEAST 119 km/h) can be felt 240 km away from the actual hurricane. I'm in Philly, and I know that so many of us just aren't prepared for a Category 4/5 hurricane at all. Has Philadelphia PA & general vicinity ever has a hurricane THIS powerful? It's currently at Category 3 but, it's still powerful. It may intensify again too. There seems to be someone here who's majoring (?) in meteorology. Can you explain? I thought that as a hurricane travels across land, it's speed/power just FAST. Does it really? If not, and it's a Category 4 or 5 by the time it fully makes it to land, we're doomed...

Ok, I'm no major in meteorology but I do know quite a bit about weather...because I too have also been interested in it.

Hurricanes thrive on tropical temperatures so there is not a chance of it intensifying while it travels North. The only time they intensify is if they'd go across Florida say and then enter the Gulf of Mexico which is another body of warm water. As a hurricane travels across land it breaks up and eventually downgrades to a tropical storm and then breaks down to just thunderstorms.

Isabel will probably be a Category 2 or 1 when it reaches PA. But with as much rain that PA has gotten this year...expect there to be massive floods. Winds are expected to be at about 70mph peak I believe.

As for your question of hurricanes hitting PA, I believe that Hurricane Andrew hit PA.

Actually when it encounters the warm waters of the gulf stream which flows along the shore there is a good chance it will strengthen somewhat.

BTW its already down two category two, tho this is due to a westerly wind that literally blew a side off it, but the winds are dying down and theres a decent chance it will become category 3 again, after it hits the gulf stream
