| PvD @ Casino, Berlin, December 20, 2002 - review Never a lack of surprises: this was a somewhat weird Vandit night. Probably because of Christmas being so close it wasn't as packed as usual to begin with, which wasn't bad as it gave more room to dance. But then there was no vibe at all, hardly any party mood in the crowd. In fact, we couldn't help noticing a lot of people elbowing their way through the crowd, mostly really bitchy girls (sorry ladies, but it was my friend I was with who pointed it out first, and she's a girl). On top of that, PvD was in a noticeably strange mood, too. He didn't look all too happy (see pics here) and quite obviously didn't want to be bothered or talked to by anyone, quickly turning away when approached. However, all of that didn't detract from the quality of his music IMO. Starting out mellow and housey as usual, Paul stepped up his pace sooner than usual, transitioning into beautiful tech and trance. Early on my night was made by Solid Sessions-Janeiro (rmx?). Part of the set before 2 am in fact reminded me of Gaafar's style as displayed in his 'A World Less Known' mix (sorry, meant to call but never managed to). So that was a good start and at 2 am Cirillo took over. The guest DJ coming on usually means a change in style and sometimes a disappointment. Not so in this case. Cirillo delivered an excellent set (he, too, played Solid Sessions-Janeiro early on!), progressing very nicely and becoming gently harder all the while. Mostly trance, some techno (Umek-Gatex was a highly visible track in that vein). The set was such that we hardly ever left the dancefloor which we usually do to take a break and recharge our batteries for the demanding 5+ hours PvD ahead of us. So I returned to the dancefloor from getting a drink and immediately noticed a change in style, indicating the return of PvD. Now the best part of his set followed: a good hour of extremely danceable, really hard yet uplifting stuff. Awesome! Two other Vandit night regulars from Berlin, however, disliked this part, dubbing it 'brutal techno' and in fact left because of it. Well, they might be more into the fluffier style, but 'brutal' this was not. Anyway, Paul eased back into a more 'typical' PvD style, surprising me all the time though: he played a lot of records not heard from him in a year or more. These tracks made my night: Lustral-Everytime (Nalin&Kane rmx), Sasha/Emerson-Scorchio (S. Kleinenberg rmx), PvD-Forbidden Fruit, Thrillseekers-Synaesthesia (PvD rmx). He also played Three Drives-Carrera 2, but unfortunately not the original (which I love and prefer) but the Nu-NRG rmx. Underlining the weirdness of the night, PvD did some very atypical things with the sequencer towards the end after 9 am. Then the set came to a close and - no calls for an encore from the remaining crowd! I have never ever seen that happen at any of his now 23 gigs I have attended. People just lingered and Paul did what everyone apparently just assumed he would - continue. When this first encore ended after some 15 minutes, people still didn't call for more, but after a while of silence sang a little 'Happy Birthday' for him, to which he smiled and put a new record on. Finally, after this it was over and calls for more (finally!) yielded nothing. All in all, it was a very unusual night, but we had a good time anyway, creating a pocket of fun in a corner of the dancefloor with a bunch of the Vandit regulars I meet there everytime.
