argh ravers in these parts think only hardcore and hard house are the real kinds of music and everything else is "boring". and i used to think they were "all about the music"... rotfl what a lie... stupid asylum kids....

another thing that gets me is when people call anything with a dance-y beat 'techno'...grrrrr
^^ soo true. My high school is pretty much every cliche HS.
All the kids listen to hip hop and rock, which i respect but when they say everything i listen to is "techno" is just annoys the shit outta me.

"you cant dance to it"
"yea i love 'techno'"
four most used phrases. and sadly theres only a handful at my school that really know what this music is. i like being different from the rest. 
I'm workin with my school to try to get different DJs to spin different music genres at school so we can fill everyone's needs than just hip hop. Hopefully i can show them what this music means to us and get some to convert

I get a nice smug smile on my face when somebody starts inquiring about my music tastes and i respond very vaguely saying something like "dance music" and then there eyes get a bit bigger for a moment or two, something clicks, and they ask, much to their dilettante discredit "Oh, that techno stuff?" pause briefly and then add "yeah i listen to some of that", to which i most politely respond "Oh I don't think you would like 'real' techno (lots of emphasis on real), it's quite different than what you think." Usually the subject is dropped right then and there because they note i've seen through their thinly veiled smoke screen of knowledge. On ocassion people do ask what "real" techno is, mockingly of course, as if they knew the proper definition, and I explain (incorrectly perhaps) "it's higher-speed dance music that focuses/emphasizes (on) percussive sounds/loops more than the melody, generally."
I think people of my age group (high school kids), generally, tend to be very shallow in their musical tastes, and are taken aback by the fact I don't listen to "rap" (or, technically, the term they use now is "hip-hop" although all they listen to is "rap") or $current_hot_prog_pop_rock_band_of_this_quarter.

i hate it when people (even self-professed fans of trance) label eurotrash songs by Orion Too or Solid Bass or whoever as techno/trance, when in reality, its just eurotrash

"I tell them I listen to trance music, techno and house music, and any other genre of music as long as I like it." After all I don't like every trance song I hear and I don't hate every hip-hop or pop song that I hear. Music is Music and I just prefer the deep soulful sounds of rythm that trance evokes. Nothing like freeing the movement of your body in a packed club.

On the PC Gamer UK forums we were having a massive argument about this. Apparently, trance isn't music because it "isn't done on real instruments", i.e synthesisers aren't real instruments. That is, until I pointed out that an electric guitar or keyboard is also electronic and so they can't count either.
Then we said that trance is made up on keyboards. One particularly stupid rock fan decided we meant pianos and came out with this classic line:
"I didn't think there were any dance tracks with pianos in them".

Stereotypes suck, but you will find them with everything. I guess it is all about perspective. I mean, to an outsider, we all look like candykids,with the bright pants, and a glowstick in our hand (which is very untrue for a lot of people), but when I look at someone who listens to rap, all I see is:
bitches and hoes that are shaking their ass in the backround
Bling bling
cars and rims
Crystal being poured on the floor
Some dude talking about all his "ice" how many bitches he has fucked, how much money he has, how many people he has killed or is going to kill...blah blah blah, you get my point. But that doesn't mean that that person is only about all that shit. Some people don't know any better and can only copy what they see...poor little fools...
Just do your best not to stereotype others and if you happen to run into those assholes who insists of catagorizing you, either educate them about our scene or smack them across their fucking face.

Yeah, I was talking to my brother last night, and he said the one "anybody can make a beat over and over again...its not hard." I think that trance is one of those things you either really like you are dislike. If you dont really get into it, you wont understand it or hear any of the good stuff.
Then he'd counter me by saying, look at this, it's real techno and he'd put out Kerncraft 400 - Zombie Nation and Darude - Sandstorm... saying this were amazingly great tunes...
yuck...I hate that shit!!! They have a radio station down here called Party 93.1 and that is all they play all fucking day long!!!
When the radio station first came out, everyone was under the impression that they would play REAL music, but they totally disappointed me and many others. Again, there are those "fools" who think that is real music and are the ones supporting the station to play crap like that. Fucking sick.
