I've never realized how upsetting grammatical errors are to some people. I just figure when someone produces a typo that they were thinking faster than they could type. Or that they were in a hurry. I'll have to try to type cautiously as not to upset the fragile state one might be in when reading posts on TA.

Thanks, guess it's faaar from perfect though... i use wrong words all the time! it's really hard to know couse in Swedish (and Danish too?) we have the same word for a lot of things so then you presume it's the same in English (when you don't know any other word).... guess that can look weird sometimes but i hope they understand anyway

My top 3 "most hated" would be to/too, than/then and there/their/they're.

It's not so much on message boards that it annoys me. It's mostly things like incorrect signs and such.
Also, seeing my buddy fuck up all the time on college papers that I proofread for him. It pisses me off because he got accepted and I didn't.

Posted by DasBrotBesser on Oct-07-2003 22:28:

LOL You stole my idea! Well, I guess it's your idea since you got to it first...

Anyway, one thing that I think is interesting to analyze is the shortened english used for road signs and whatnot (as in how it makes sense even if you leave helping verbs out etc.), but not when they shorten the english by taking out the wrong words! One example I can think of that drives me CRAZY is a sign in the shuttle that I take to class that says, "No standing front white line while bus is in motion." I guess it's kind of hard to explain, but to me it seems like the obvious choice, if they really needed to save two letters, would be to take out the last "is" so it would read, "No standing front of white line while bus in motion." What the shit is "front white line" supposed to mean?

Another one is run-on sentences without punctuation that I see everywhere on message boards it gets quite annoying reading whole paragraphs without commas periods semi-colons colons whatever it just seems like someone is writing on a third-grade level i just sit there and think shouldn't you be in bed li'l boy?

ahhh.. finally, someone understands me. All my American friends make fun of me for saying full stop. But that is what I learned in school.

translates to (word-for-word) "The bread better" ?? what is that supposed to mean?

I give you the 'typo' excuse though. You might have wanted your nick to be: "DasBrotMesser" -> The bread knife

LOL finally! I was waiting for some crazy German to notice my name and freak out. Actually, it's from an inside joke between me and some friends in German class. There was a dialogue in the book where this guy finished up by saying, "Ja, da ist das Brot besser," and for some reason we just started cracking up, and now whenever we're saying something is cool, we just say, "Ja, da ist das Brot besser." After all, it IS the better bread...

heh stop worring about how stupid people talk

Definitely is the most commonly mispelled word. Seriously, pay attention to it, I rarely see it spelled correctly. Doesn't bother me, but it always catches my attention.

'ur' definitely annoys me tho.

Peopel who don;t pay attention to teh words they are typing abotu.

That is usually what my threads look like before I go back and proofread them. I transpose a lot of letters and always seem to put semicolons instead of apostrophes. Don't know why I do that.

i'm just going to respond to several things mentioned because i don't want to quote everything...

yes, i'm a grammar and usage nazi. yes, i usually do not capitalize. yes, i recognize the irony because i know irony is the opposite of what you would expect, not a coincidence. many people say ironic when they mean coincidence.

i do not fault people who don't speak english natively when they post. foreigners usually speak and write better english than most americans and brits.

i'm not "delicate" because i think people should have respect for the rules of the english language. if you can't express yourself effectively, i get the impression that you're unintelligent. it's hard to wade through a poorly written, rambling post so i normally don't even read them.

as for my biggest grammar peeve: very unique. unique is defined as "one of a kind," so there can be no degrees of uniqueness. something is either one-of-a-kind or it's not. an item cannot be "somewhat unique," "kind of unique," or "very unique." it's the one thing i always correct people on because it's like nails on a chalkboard.

Posted by DasBrotBesser on Oct-08-2003 05:42:

Thanks Daffy, you reminded me of some more pet peeves with that one.

ATM machine
PIN number
advanced planning
people who type daffy instead of daffodil
people who say Calvin & Hobbes isn't the best comic ever

Posted by Boomer187 on Oct-08-2003 06:03:

Well to me boards are informal so I could care less about grammar and syntax. I am more looking for semantics in posts, which seems to be rare (besides the ever so popular "PICS OR STFU"). Plus I suck at typing, sometimes my left hand is quicker than my right and "the" comes out as "teh". who cares.

heres one to think about, between compares only 2 things, you use among when there is more than 2.

and of course everything everyone before me said....
