But Arnold wasn't any great scientist or someone with great intellect when he became a millionaire. His bodybuilding didn't put that much pressure on the noggin...

You don't go from rags to riches on your own accord by being a dummy. It's a lot harder to successfully run your own business than most people think. Since he made his money using his own brains and talent I'm inclined to give him more respect than half the daddy's little rich kid politicians out there.

Agreed. Arnold did get a degree from the Univ of Wisconsin via correspondence courses, and no Big Ten university gives out business degrees that are "simple" to get.

I would put my money on him seeing as you live in Missouri and they elected a dead guy to the Senate in 2000.

I miss living in KC sometimes....that was one entertaining place to be during the 2000 campaign.

If you want to talk about rags to riches, please talk about Cruz. He went from a crop picker to now lt. gov. Anyway Arnold came here with a opportunity setup for him by um... forgot the fitness company, but he was basicly setup. Lets not forget Planet Hollywood

Setup? How so? His parents were poor, he was poor, and he made his millions LONG before his lucrative movie career. He subsidized his own schooling, invested his own money ... he went from poor austrian immigrant to wealthy millionaire. He started off no better than cruz except with a desire to be physically fit.

and about heatwave muggy summers and bitter ass cold winters...i feel for you...here in the bay area we have the greatest weather in the world...pack ur bags and move to california

His parents were not poor. His father was a Nazi MP officer, and then became a police officer in postwar Austria up until he died. Im sure the most police officers have their familes pretty well off, alot better than poor. But yeah he did get rich before his movie career through his fitness.

Being a police officer in post war Austria was not as high paying a job as you think. And an "MP" would have gotten no more special treatment than any other rank and file soldier in the nazi hierarchy. The only people who had preferential treatment were the SS.

IN the late 70s being a bodybuilder was not a big money business, or even a business in which you could really become a star. You are under this impression that he was "bank-rolled" by Joe Weider like he was signing a Nike shoe endorsement today. That was not the case at all.

The facts are considerably closer to occrider's comments than by your ill-informed propoganda.

Well this is what he did before he came to America:

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was born July 30,1947, in Austria four miles from Graz in the little town of Thal. The name Schwarzenegger means "Black Plowman". Arnold is the son of Gustav and Aurelia Schwarzenegger. Arnold had a brother named Meinhard who was one year older than Arnold. Arnold and his brother were always competing against each other with school and sports. Meinhard died in a car accident when he was in his 20's.
Arnold was first introduced to weightlifting during a soccer team field trip to a local gym in Graz. After watching the dedicated bodybuilders there, Arnold was fascinated. His father was disappointed because bodybuilding was the least popular sport in Austria. In 1961 Arnold met Kurt Marnul, the former Mr. Austria. Marnul was impressed with Arnold and asked him if he wanted to train in the Union in Graz. Arnold trained seven days a week. He was so dedicated to bodybuilding that he broke into the gym on Sundays to train because the gym was closed. Conditions there were so harsh that more than once his hands froze to the weights. Besides training Arnold began a three-year apprenticeship as a carpenter.
In 1965 when Arnold turned 18 he joined the Austrian Army for mandatory service. His parents hoped the time in the army would cure him of his bodybuilding obsession. However, Arnold had a different idea. While in basic training, he found out that the Junior Mr. Europe bodybuilding competition was going to be held in nearby Stuttgard. Arnold went AWOL from the army to compete and won the with a perfect 300 point score, the first anyone had ever had a perfect score. But his absence did not go unnoticed and while trying to sneak back into camp he was caught and thrown in jail for seven days. Despite going AWOL to compete, Arnold became the company hero because of his determination and accomplishment and was even ordered to continue to train, which he did until he was released from service in 1966.
In 1966, Arnold moved to Munich by invitation to train at the Putzingger Gym. In September of that year, he placed second in the Mr. Universe competition held in London. One year later, Arnold bought Putzinger Gym and returned to London to win his first Amateur Mr. Universe title and became the youngest competitor to do so. A year later Arnold's father died of a stroke not seeing the success his son was soon to achieve. Just after his fathers death in 1972 Arnold won his first Professional Mr. Universe title and was invited by the American bodybuilding champion Joe Weilder to train in America. Despite having completed two years at the University of Munich studying marketing, Arnold moved across the ocean to America.


Looks to me like his parents weren't rich and he made all his money on his own accomplishments ... I dunno that's a fairly impressive biography of someone who hadn't even turned 20 yet.

Well thanks for the clearing that up, but i never said his parents were rich. I just assume that his father having a career as a police officer for his whole life, was better off than poor. Seriously though, who has a better chance to succed when coming to america... a white male or a mexican? Sure both can succed, but it will most likely be easier for the white male, just because his white.

I can't argue with your last point, though again we're making stereotypes about others. That attitude Californians thinking they are the center of the universe is well known. Actually I should backtrack a little - the attitude of L.A. folk more specifically. I'm not going too far out of bounds with that generalization, but it is merely a generalization. Two personal examples:

A number of years ago I was studying marine ecology for my undergrad degree at KU, and I spent a summer out in Coos Bay, Oregon taking a few classes and helping grad. students with their research. Now there were many people from all over there for the classes, but most were from the West Coast. Three people in particular were going to school out in UC Irvine, and when we introduced ourselves and mentioned where we were from, they honestly had no f$cking clue where Kansas was. That was really all I needed to mention, but much more could have been said about these idiots that really fit the stereotype previously mentioned.

A second personal example came from my wife's best friend who came from a small town in Kansas, and moved out to Huntington Beach for 6 years. Well she moved back, and took all the L.A. attitude with her. Needless to say, my wife and her on not on very good speaking terms anymore - she drives her (and myself) up the f$cking wall.

As for the rest of California, you're right in that I shouldn't have lumped the other cities. From my times I've spent in San Fran I realized the people there are quite a bit different (or shall I say more normal) than the L.A. folk. I thoroughly enjoyed my times spent there, but it's butt ass freezing in the summertime!

I wish I could, but I'm enrolled in a school here to attain my PhD, as is my wife for her nursing degree. Plus the real estate out there is ridiculous! How anyone can afford housing out there is beyond me.

those people in southern california are on another country...screw socal...in fact they DO think they are the center of the universe

northern california is where its all about...we're way more nicer here in norcal

We never usually talk politics in class, but all my classmates voted for Cruz or mcklintok, cept for one girl who voted for Arnold, everyone was just wtf
