CHECK OUT THE NEW COMPILATIONS SECTION I PUT

Posted by Jocker on Oct-15-2003 21:26:

ok, i'm working on the page...
so far i have created the database and the page displaying the things in alphabetical order
i'll add sorting, search, interface to add/modify releases etc. in a day or two... if you want any features, tell me here.

also, i have problems filling out the "just released" section, because you erase the dates when it was released, and it is not good for the integrity of the database

great work m8! thx!

The main thing I was thinking about was updates. When someone logged in clicked on like an edit button or something, up comes the record, you can click on check boxes of where you can get it, modify the label and release date (if that does end up in place). Hit save, and because it's been updated it's a different colour. When a record gets added it'd be nice if it stays a different colour for a week (another date function [only way i've done it b4?]).

Who here would be interested in having a login so they could maintain the data? So we can modify the tracks add/remove where they are. Once a track is modified, it'd also have when it was updated and by which user (so if someone unticks stuff on purpose, they'll get banned or something?).

A filter to filter a few things. Main thing I'm thinking of is filtering for a style/genre of music, and seeing what's in stock @ a specific shop and only that shop in that genre/style.

Hope you don't mind. Can't wait to see it.

it's not about updates (even though you won't be updating this thread forever) - it's about flexibility (searching and sorting options) and the ability to edit things...

great work though!

Keep up the good work frostdude1

Jocker: It's great that you are giving up your own time to do this. I have quite a few good scripts we have used at work that would do the trick quite nicely. If you need any help with it let me know and I will send them over to you

checking for stock in different shops if practicaly inviable. you see, different sites have different search engines, and you have to know the details of each engine's framework to be able to construct a thing to retrieve the results. for example, juno got the weirdest engine i've seen. if you search for "envio", you'll get some results, among which is the one i want ("envio - touched by the sun"). but if you search for "envio touched", it will give you 0 results. i can provide the links to the search engines or the forms on my page (you'll have to input the data only once, and it will open the search results on all the sites). but in order to say "in stock" - the only way to check this is when the shops themselves would send me a list of what's new in stock (which i doubt they'll do).

including the "genre" field is the good idea - i didn't do it in the first place. highlighting the new additions is easy - i can simply mark the last 5 releases added as new ones.

right now i have an index file, which displays all the results (i have already implemented sorting - you can sort by the release date, artist name, label or title of the release), a page to add the releases and a page to search at juno. still to be done: the genre field, categories (to distinguish between singles and albums), search engine within the site (to search for strings in any field - artist, title, label or date), login and editing system, and the unified search engine for other stores.

Sorry didn't explain what I meant properly.

What I meant was a filter on your site, filtering your content.

So let's say your DB contains Holden - Nothing (93 returning mix) @ Juno and Chem

It also contains Nathan Fake - Outhouse @ Chem.

Running the filter on your site over prog will return both records, but having the option of selecting prog @ Juno will only return Holden - Nothing.

If people(read admins) update it enough, it WILL only have instock items there due to people fixing up stock levels after they've checked the site.

SQL wise (incase I still don't make sense).

SELECT * FROM tracks_db WHERE genre='Prog' & shop='Juno' & stock='1'

[that's a really bad statement and also the way that all teh data is in one table, but this is not RDMS course/lecture, and I'm sure you'll have it broken down into mulitple DB's and use inner-joins for the queries]

Looking @ what's done and what's to do, other then my little thing above, I can't think of anything else, other then something visually pleasing

Once again, thanks for your time and efforts, I'm sure it will not be forgotten.

i perfectly understand what you mean
but, like i said, it is almost impossible to check for stock automatically. so unless there will be a person who will look for whether ALL the releases are in stock or not in ALL the stores (which is quite tiresome, i imagine) - or the shops will email their stock lists everyday themselves - and i will create a script to parse that, - there is NO way to know what's in stock where. however, there will be a search engine that will open the search result pages from all the shops - and it will take only 5 seconds to find out whether the store has the records or not.

cheers.

anyway, i'm off the net till monday (and away from computer too), so i will continue working on it then

It sound amazing what you're doing Jocker & DJWay! I've thought about the exact same thing, but I don't have any database experience at all. It's nice to see the hard work you put in it!

I fully understand that it's not possible to check whether a certain record is in stock with all the different search engines etc. But still I like the idea with check boxes with all the different shops - then you could at least check whether they have been in stock.

I don't know whether you follow me, but if a shop is checked, and they don't carry it in stock, you'd probably find out when you try to order the record
At least I think it'd be nice to know that the shop, at least at one point had the record in stock.

Another thing I think would be really cool if possible was to add prices to the records in each shop.
Chemical are for example very expensive sometimes. Then you could make the page something like this:

Dras - Sonic Rush | ---- | 8.40 | 7.3 | ---- | 6.90 |
Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes | 7.80 | 9.60 | ---- | 11.20 | 8.90 |

With each row representing one of the shops.
Don't know whether this is too difficult, but it'd certainly be a nice feature IMO.

Thanx for your work mate looks really good..

But I dont see the reason why this thread exists ?? I mean if you just have the links for the Web Shops you can go there and they usually have the latest releases on their front page.. i see no point in listing them here..
