i don't have any decks, so bying vinyl is useless to me.

neither do i buy compilation cds, because i don't like half of the tracks that are on it most of the time.

i do buy artist albums.

i just really hope lables start releasing cd singles.

ppl that drain the scene...

if you truly have NO alternative, as in if cd's arnt available and there are no trance nights you can get to, and if you didnt download all your music then you simply wouldnt have trance, then you would in my opinion be ok robbing the industry blind.

but however if you do have the choice, never buy any music/go to any nights, and download all your music then u have no excuse. even if you went out and bought the odd mix cd here or there, its better than nothing.. the scene needs a lot of support at the moment.

before i had decks i downloaded most of the single tracks i wanted, but i still bought cd's here and there when i could afford it (i was a schoolboy back then ).. but now i have the options, i buy pretty much all of the music i listen to on vinyl. i dont understand why people would only want to download music, it comes out first in the record shop.

I dont have a CD player anyway, so i cant play CD's if i bought them (for some reason i cant play CD's on my comp, i dont get any sound from it and i dont know why)

Compliation CD's are always shite and i never wud buy them anyway

Artist albums are much better and i will download them, but i prefer to download live sets coz they are usually better.

I mostly download tunes and sets/albums to find tunes that i like so i can decide what i wanna buy on 12". Im skint and cant afford to spend money on loads of CD's when they cud be crap. Id much rather download something listen to it first before making a decision to buy it on 12". I do buy alot of 12" and i do go clubbing quite frequently, I do spend quite a bit on this

The internet lets me keep up with tunes. When i didnt have the net for a year i didnt buy many tunes on 12" and the only ones i bought were ones that i knew (usually old) simply coz i had no way of finding out what new tunes sounded like. I dont have the money to buy tunes without listening to them first

i've got a lot of mp3s and i'm not ashamed of it. you can be judgemental, but you don't know my current state.
the reason is that probably 99% of all cd's only have 2 or 3 good tracks that i want, and the rest is shite.
i used to buy more than 4 cd's a month, i've got about 400 - 500 right now. nowadays with the high prices i simply can't afford to buy cd's with only a few good tracks on it.
i have to pay for my car and my appartment, and since i'm unemployed right now, i just don't have the money for it.
and most of the good stuff don't get on cd anyways, sometimes in mixes, but i like full tracks. that's why i download basically every track available.

If I ever had turntables (and I aspre to some day) I'd gladly fork over my food budget for vinyl, but until that day its not gonna happen. And I'm not going to buy an artist album either unless I like all the tracks, not just a few - its a waste of money.

The reason so many people turn to downloading is because theres no better alternative. Until I can buy CD quality (320 kbps), un-DRM'ed mp3's that I can redownload for free should my HD crash or something, for say, maybe $.50 - $1 USD, no monthly fee crap, then I'll just stick with DC++. Services like iTunes and such are already paving the way, but the selection for someone like me, with my widely varied tastes, is pure shit.

I don't see why it would be so hard for some labels to offer a paypal service or something for high quality mp3's. They'd make a killing. Just look at the VCR. The MPAA fought rabidly to keep VCR's down - but selling tapes ended up saving their whole industry.

I think that just about nails it on the head. The only problem is there's no way to prevent payed downloads from being redistributed for free on file-sharing networks, so it would probably never work.

I spend a crapload on vinyl for audio quality and DJ capability; that's satisfactory in my mind. I have plenty of mp3s too, but they basically guide my vinyl purchases, unless I like the track but not enough to justify playing it myself. And it's crazy that this would be the limiting factor in the whole thing, but I actually delete the mp3s of tracks I have on vinyl simply for hard drive space.

Of course this works just because I'm trying to DJ. If I wasn't I'd probably be a fully shameless downloader just like the rest.

And let's not even get into the psychotic shipping prices I pay to get the freaking records to California.

tell me about it. the shipping is almost as much as the record hehehe...i guess thats the price i pay for waiting to start buying vinyl. now you can't find the stuff in the record store so you gotta buy online hehehe...

what do you people think?

nice post tta, I agree, people should start going to more gigs, and but more vinyls/cds. I buy alotta cds/vinyls my self, but i dont goto any gigs,cause... i dont have that much funding...haha ilive inthe middle of nowhere "in ontario" and i would have to spend a fortune to go see soemone. so i just stickwith buying cd's and vinyls... of course i still downlaod mp3s too, to get asample of what i'd be buying

i believe most artists make their money off of gigs, not off of record sales. so im all for supporting gigs but unless as someone else said i like 50% or more songs on a cd or its a decent single, i refuse to pony up 15-20 dollars. Added to this fact is that im a poor college student and if i owned every mp3 ive ever downloaded on vinyl, i wouldnt ahve enough room in my house. I download mp3s to "try out" songs and from there that is how i spend my money. not saying that mp3 downloading isnt hurting the music industry, but if a few record labels go down, is it really a bad thing? the artists still go on. Im sure ill get alot of Bonzai reminders here, but oh well, the destruction of a label doesnt mean no more music, it means the artists wont be pressing music with said labels equipment. I dont know how i feel about the issue, but until i figure it out, ill pkeep downloading mp3s for sampling purposes.

Posted by satelites on Oct-26-2003 23:53:

im only 16 and i have a part time job which pays not enough money. ill admit i dload trance but i have very litte money, the cds are way too expensive here in blighty, ive only been on this scene for a year and if i bought every mp3 on vinyl, i would be in debt until im twenty. i made the mistake whereby i used to buy commercial compilations (MoS etc.) and this has really put me off buying cds. also, surely, if no-one was allowed to dload tunes, how would they know what it was like, we have very few record stores that i know of here and we wouldnt have a clue on any of it except through reputation. on this note, if i hadnt had heard some of the sets ive got, i wouldnt be saving up right now to go to them when im old enough.

much as its a drain on the industry and artists, its also kinda essential otherwise peeps would jus play it safe an not go an buy anything. if there were no mp3's, there would be a much smaller scene as we know it

I'd just like to set something straight for a second here before i confess my "sins." When you download a track/compilation/liveset, you are not taking "anything" physically from "the scene." They aren't losing a red penny, however, they are losing percieved value of copyrighted property. In all likelyhood if somebody has downloaded say, 10,000 tracks, and never bought a single one, they wouldn't buy any if they were unable to download the tracks either. You can mix and match it all you want, but the truth is, that the "*.mp3 scene" got me into EDM.

To put this in perspective briefly, I've probably bought a grand total of 4 or 5 albums in my life. 2, that I can think of, are electronica. I probably have somewhere between 2-3 thousand songs on my drive.

Obviously, I am a "freeloader"... actually, I just make nearly zero money, (i just turned 18 three days ago) so I cannot afford to buy albums/vinyl. I do go to gigs though about once every couple months (probably 20 or so total), so in that way I am supporting the scene.

All in all, I am just as bad (in the context of the law) as people who download a few tracks and then delete them if they don't like them. Copyright violation is copyright violation, there really isn't a 'twist' you can put on the situation. Are you for it, or against it? Think binary...

Posted by Zenchowdah on Oct-27-2003 04:20:

ha... i buy cds as much as i can, but my cd store's selection in this area is quite low, they'd rather focus on Fiddy Cent, and Alkaline trio and their genres... but anyways, my dad has actually yelled at me for buying cds.. "Why waste your money on them when you can just download them?"

I agree, if you really like it then do us a favour and BUY IT!!!

in the past month i have spent 600 on vinyl...it's way too much for me atm...but it's songs that i like it so i don't mind

some artist are not even trying anymore to impress, they think we are going to buy anything than comes out of them...bleh!

Posted by whiskers on Oct-27-2003 05:03:

i'm against downloading albums, it's pointless. it's so much more pleasant to go out and buy it, unless, of course, i can't find it.

livesets i download, yes, some singles, but mostly south park episodes and movies lately. i'd buy more stuff on vinyl if i had decks and the stores around here had better selection...

Posted by Psygnosis on Oct-27-2003 05:06:

^^^^ I agree 100% with being against downloading albums..

OK when you download a single it could be the fact that it's not out on CD but you want to hear it...now if artist did actually release their songs on CD then i'' be against singles too...

but albums is a big no-no cause you can actually buy it.

most likely
there is cord which connects from your CD Rom to your Sound Card.
This cord has to be connected for you to beable to play audio CDs on your CD ROM
sounds like its not connected

It is plain wrong, but that wont stop most people. I cant say that every song I own was aquired legally, but the thing about MP3's and the like is that it gives people the opportunity to hear songs before they go out and spend cash on them and risk buying something they dont like.

I know you can check out the tunes in most places before you buy them anyway, but sometimes a song needs to be played a few times for it to grow on you. Listening to an MP3 a few times will help it do that, after which you can go out and buy the song.
