Some of Airwave's stuff does straddle the line between trance and progressive trance, but I think he tends towards the former. He's one of the few artists that I feel makes plain old "trance" these days, without any of the fancy adjectives. We're just used to thinking that this is "progressive" because there's such a gap between actual progressive trance and uplifting/epic.

Basically:

Prog Trance (Holden, Breeder, Way Out West) <--> Trance (Airwave, MIKE) <--> Uplifting Trance (Armin, Ferry, all the rest)

Hope that made some sense. At least that's how I think about it.

Lol, all the styles can have all the rest in them (for obvious reasons). But the guys you've picked I agree with. Airwave's phrases are 32 beat phrases, so it's trance

Naturally there's a bunch of crossover, but that's just sort of the general spectrum I have in my mind.

I like how you're trying to distinguish by actual technical elements. Maybe we can deconstruct a bit of what makes these different labels tick.

(My opinion)

Progressive trance:

Solar Stone vs. Siroco - Destination
Solar stone - Solar Coaster

Most of the guys off of the Lost Language label.

Progressive trance in my opinion, takes one music element (which could mean a slow building riff, synthline...etc), and builds upon it, takes it out to tease you, the comes back with the same element with more added and eventually progressing into "something" full blown. It doesnt have much of a climax as normal trance have, and it might not be energetic enough for the E-tards.

I love progressive.

Posted by torontotrance on Oct-27-2003 20:45:

da hell, digweed still plays progressive trance. I mean he always has age of love - age of love in his box and plays it out. That's trance, last time I checked. I saw him last year in nov and he played trance with prog house, prog, breaks, ambient, tech house and techno.

Posted by infinity HiGH on Oct-27-2003 20:49:

I haven't heard Destination, but Solar Coaster is not even close to being progressive trance

Progressive trance, first off, is a lot slower than regular trance and it's bassline is more "detailed" and house-influenced, but still keeps some of the trance elements, such as an epic building synth line (if thats a good way to say it). Also, one thing that I noticed about "prog" is that it's a little more subtle/minimal than trance is. Whereas in uplifting trance, the melody is pretty much thrown out at you, in prog its toned down a bit.

In some songs though, it's really hard to distingiush whether they're prog house or prog trance.

I would consider all the Planispere tracks to be progressive trance.

Evan Almae made a great suggestion, Leama and Moor.

Bart Van Wissen - Space Tourist is another progessive traner

Prog house and prog trance is all prog!!! Its Progressive it doesnt split to 2 different genres. Go ask any big time prog dj ask them what do you play 90% of the time they will say its Progressive .. not progressive house, progressive trance . Personaly its all trance lovers who really dont listen to prog that call prog trance. Progressive is a vibe and mood setting a track portrays thats why progresive can enquire styles of trance, house, tribal, breaks, tech, etc and still be progressive because the track still brings out a progressive vibe. I see many tracks you guys labeled as prog trance..and personally many of Trance listeners will call certain tracks progressive but in all honesty its trance not prog. So when a track isnt really a epic trance track with the melodies and uplifting buildups you call it prog but not all trance is uplifting and melodic but it doesnt mean its progressive. You will never see a true prog dj say i spin prog trance if he does he doesnt know what hes talking about.

So ill say it again and some of you might be confused but ask people who are prog djs for a while and prog listeners for a while... PROG IS PROG!!! its all the same some just more deeper, houseier, trancier, etc

so stop trying to figure out whats prog trance and prog house ..if your a prog listener you listen to prog if your trance listen to trance plain and simple!

I am mainly doing this because people interpet progressive trance differently and I'd like to see what everyone thinks it is. That's all.

Sit down kiddies, time for a story.

Trance and House were sitting around smoking pot and other such downers, when they decided to fuck. They ended up having the Prog twins. Their slow and mellow bastard children were called Prog House, and Prog Trance, because while part of the SAME DAMN GENRE, they had slight differences.

And the moral is, there is House, there is Trance, and there is Prog. Prog trance and Prog house are subgenres of Prog. Seems kinda weird, but that makes for a much more accurate description, considering how alike they are.

the term progressive shouldn't really be used on its own, its an adjective
people have just started to call the whole prog house and prog trance thing progressive, but infact there are differences just like there are differences between Happy house and Happy hardcore

Posted by Breeze on Oct-28-2003 09:48:

To me most of the BONZAI crew are progressive trance , like Body-Shock , MIKE, and Airwave.

AMEN Brother!

About the only thing, prog house and prog trance have in common is the phrasing and the beats per min[which isn't even always the case]. Listen to the SOUNDS in the track.

Prog-House generally has a lot more percussion in highs, it's funky(sometimes funkier), it can be sexy, it can be deep, it can be tribal. [EG's Kate Bush vs Infusion - Running up that Hill borders on Tribal Prog House. James Holden - Nothing [Original Mix] is Prog-House. The Greek Feat Stephanie Vezina - Alive is a sexy Prog-House track]

Prog-Trance, hardly ever has lots of highs, and has epic melodies, or is melodic, it doesn't feel sexy at all. Enchanting, but not sexy.
[EG's Sasha - Xpander,Conjure One - Centre Of The Sun (JXL Remix), Dave Gahan - I Need You (G&D Remix)].

In regards to asking a DJ what do they play, and them say "Progressive" I haven't found one prog DJ in Sydney say they play Progressive. In Sydney Progressive is a dirty word. People play pro-tech, tech-house, prog-house, prog-trance. All the interviews I've read in regards to "what do they play", they play what they like is the common answer.

From a production point of view I'd be a bit shitty if someone who knows the difference called a prog-trance track I made prog-house, they use totally different sounds. Personally, I don't like prog-house most of the time (or any of it's sub sub genres/styles), but love prog-trance.

Sydney has a prog-house following, and only about 20-30 guys who like prog-trance. Put on a night of prog-house and it'll do well, put on prog-trance it'll fail (it's been tried before; the night still running [prog-house] is called Sweetchilli).

Yes they can both be called progressive, taking that attitude trance and progressive can both be called "techno" from an outsiders point of view, or EDM from someone being general. Think about it.

It's a track I play as a bridge between prog trance and trance, so I agree with you, bordering on progressive.

ahhh some of you kids are cluess.... ok so what if its a adjective its what something is called..... we call trance and trance not much different .... i assume your not a prog listener because your statement really reflects that of a non prog listener or someone new in the genre. PROGRESSIVE is a well established genre ...if you have djs like digweed, sasha, sander, jimmy, etc calling it a genre on its own and calling it progressive, then hmmm whos right you or them i would more likely listen and take in from someoen who is one of the founders of the progressive movement.no offense to you just i dont think u realy understand prog

for example ... some of you labels tracks like junkie xl prog trance and then label tracks like Sultan stuff prog house...so if djs like digweed, sasha, etc play both in the same set i mean cant be much fuckin difference yeah some is trancy some is more deeper some is tribal but its all progressive .... you guys seriously make me laugh and thats why i dont know why i try to explain the essense of prog music and what it really is and people just dont understand and grasp the concept ...

Kids keep listening to your trance and stop filling your lives trying to figure out whats what or what is called what. Because the die hard prog fans know what its called and know what its refered to plain and simple.

Posted by Mr Game+Watch on Oct-28-2003 17:44:

Prog House is a bit slower, more percussive, less melodic than Prog Trance. Sasha in Ibiza disk 1 is the perfect example of Prog Trance while 014 - Digweed in HK disk 1 is the perfect example of Prog House.

Posted by torontotrance on Oct-28-2003 17:53:

no..the start of gu014 is prog house

most of it is digweed's pre prog house form

most of it is prog trance but then again, you could argue either way.

Dear, if you're going to be that way go the the GU forums. They "understand" your "progressive" "essence".

Calling a genre "progressive" is like calling a genre "hard" or "deep". Hard or deep what?
