"In 1987 I started playing only with CD's! "

How did you mix with CD's in 1987? Was it possible to beatmatch cd's back then? Or did you just do some tricks with switching from one to the other instantly?

turntables, only scratching is impossible. Instead I'm using a lot
the "loop" function.
It's not the the source (Vinyl or CD's or...) what makes a DJ good,
it's how he plays what is important.

AH HA...there is a CD player that can scratch! (don't you just love technology?) Go to http://www.marsmusic.com/ select the DJ, lighting & karaoke tab then on the left side select CD players. Check out the specs on the Numark CDN-88 Dual "scratch" Cd player...and by the way, I agree with you 100% its the DJ not the Vinyl or CD's

I have that CD Player, and although it is of no use to me, the scratching definately works very well. It's a lot of fun to play with.

Smiley DJ Illegal?

Is it illegal to burn mp3's to CD's and use them in public? I dunno. I thought I heard that somewhere. If it's not then I'll probably buy a CD player and do it because there's alotta mp3's out there that are awesome, yet close to impossible to find on wax.

Posted by DJAdamSmith on Jul-23-2001 20:42:

I'm not sure if it's illegal or not, but the police aren't hanging out in the clubs waiting for someone to play a burned cd, so I think you're safe.

And, if I were an artist, I'd want my song played as many places as possible so I could get a spot on a cd mix or get more exposure or just sell more vinyl.

Who's going to know if you purchased a CD, ripped it, mixed it using an MP3 mixer, then converted it back to .wav and burned it on a CD? Also, I agree with DJ AdamSmith...people want their music advertised - especially since its free advertisement.

CD Mixing in '87

"CD mixing in '87"

We didn't had pitch control or other possibilities to mix the tracks,
so it was not easy to do the "perfect mix" in those days. The way
we mixed was not so important in those days. It was the type of
music wich was very important. In 1990 we had finally the 1st
CD player with pitch control by Technics, but no pitch bend!
It was great fun experimenting with new stuff, like it still is now!

I know about the "scratching CD player" but my (old) Pioneer 500
doesn't has that feature!

Greetings,

Steven

Yall were talking about scratching cd's earlier. u should chk out the revolutionary new pioneer cdj-1000. its nothing less than incredible... just wish i had the money.

Posted by dazzed on Jul-26-2001 01:10:

i dunno it would be tempting to sell my tables and buy some nice cd players, and download all the music i ever want to hear.
but, for some reason i feel like vinyll is part of the music. and to start playing cds (short of songs that didn't make it to vinyll or you/your friends produced) just wouldn't be right. i may just be being stubborn.

anybody know a good mp3 player that has features for record->mp3, not just mp3->mp3. that could be cool to add into your mix.

Posted by DJ Sunburn on Jul-26-2001 01:51:

Smile Tongue not to mention

Not to mention there are more dance tunes available on vinyl than mp3 or CD. But there are also alot of cool tunes available on CD or Mp3 that aren't available on vinyl. So I conclude...buy dual turntables and dual cd players and you got yourself set, but try to get more things on vinyl still so you can "look cooler." But yeah, it's true, it's the DJ not the equipment so do whatever the heck you want really. The point is to make the people on the floor dance and go crazy. Especially those fine females...

This discussion always comes up, the big thing that I like about vinyl is the "sound", there's no other way to describe it really.

Vinyl just sounds 100x better than CD, the little crackles etc....
You can't get that on CDs. On CDs the sound is just too pure / clean.

The vinyl sound is also slightly "phatter".

Agree / Disagree?

Posted by Izzy on Jul-27-2001 22:38:

i disagree
i bet you 100 bucks if you took the best sounding turntable (i.e. no static...) and a normal CD player, blind folded yourself and listened you would either not tell the difference or pick the CD over vinyl.

hey if you want that slight crackle and hiss just kinda mess around with your speaker wire so you hear that stuff come out of your speaker.

btw are vinyl stereo? as in surround sound (different sounds from panning from L and R)?

I have heard some CD's fresh out the pack mixed by big name DJ's not having that crisp full sound to it. The best sounding CD's I have heard so far are the one's mixed by George Acosta. Buy one of his CD's and listen to the sound quality - they sound as good as if not better than vinyl recordings. I want the CD's I make to sound like his.

You kinda missed the point of my post. It's not the turntables that have the "sound", it's the vinyl itself. If turntables had static - that's bad.

CDs are way too "clinical in sound. Perhaps the sound shouldn't be described as static. It's just "there". No other way to describe it - sorry about that. Some of the DJs / people on this thread will know what I mean by it.

turntables vs CD, it'd still be interesting to have a blindfold test and REALLY see if you can pick one over the other on a consistant basis.

I'm basicly a CD DJ, but i my friend is a "Vinyl Head" and i sometimes spin on his tables... i have to tell you that spinning vinyl is more fun!

p.s.

Izzy, your name is Idan???

Posted by Izzy on Jul-30-2001 00:02:

ya alonzo, my name is idan, im isreali but i ditched the army and studying at texas A&M university (thats what the aTm symbol is), actually i lived half my life "be'hool" (outside of israel).

anyways i dont doubt that spinning vinyl is funner, they are for me too... im just wondering if people can tell the difference between the way it sounds and its not just there biast imagination.

Posted by dj alonzo on Jul-30-2001 18:15:

How old are you anyway?
My brother lives in minnesota and learns there... UofM (university of minnesota).
You guys won the NCAA swimming and diving last year, right?
I was there... boy, your University has a great swimming team! (my brother's a (olimpic) swimmer, that's why i was at the NCAA swimming&diving championship)

Smiley DJ

I am a Bi-Format DJ i use both CD's and wax in my sets.
I dont think one format is easier. I think being able to spin on multipal formats you give yourself a broader range of music and you definitly have more skillz as well.
The war of CD vs Wax will never end, but the Respect a CD DJ gets needs to improove, Ive noticed that a lot of ppl dont respect the CD DJ unless they are a Big name Talent, IE PVD, Tiesto ect ect...
thats one thing that needs to change its not the format its the music that counts!
Peace

CD vs Vinyl

Don't forget that the quality of a CD or vinyl track always depend
of the recording source (master)! The most of the modern
dance music is made with ... digital equipement!
That's why You don't hear a lot of audio difference between
CD's and vinyl's!

And again, guys, its not CD or vinyl that makes people dancing, it's
the DJ who does this ... with CD's, vinyl or other divices. I play
with CD, vinyl and minidisc and every week it's big fun in our club!

Greetings

King In the end it's the music that count's..

I saw Max Graham use CD's last time he was in London,On...... He played a banging set and we couldn't care less.... But I think it has to do with perception..... People assume that with cd's that dj's just let them run and play they have no idea about the extra's that players Like the CDj 500 offer to a Dj Seamless loop, setting cue points, ie......This allows dj's to incorporate more effects into there set's allowing for greater varity..... and in the end it's the music that counts

Very true, Its the Music and the DJ that gets the masses movin'

I have the Numark CDN_88's and they are great CD Decks! The seamless looping on them is PHAT! Ive been experimenting with it during my sets and if yah get the right loop of beats and such you can make ur set that much better and blow the masses away!

Take care
DJ Skott.
