LMAO!!!

its funny because it so true. And like all of you have already said, most of my comments are " CAN U PLAY SOME HIP HOP" or " CAN U PLAY (INSERT POPULAR TRACK NAME HERE)?"

what irks me the most is, its usually girls that say it to me. I really can't stand bitches like that, who just want to freak dance and they dont care about anything else.

Jesus expand your mind a little and you'll see there is actually music out in the world that is not spoon-fed into ur life via MTV!

Worst comment(s):

When playing trance...

"Why aren't you playing any trance?"

"Do you have any hip-hop?"

Best comment(s):

"Your mixing and track selection...I was sitting by the speaker and tears were rolling down my cheeks."

Sorry 'bout that folks. I misread the topic and so I've re-edited.

hmmm

how about when this HOT ASS BEAUTIFUL GIRL walks up all sexy to
you, looks you in the eye, leans in, gets next to your ear and
then utters, "could you play Dirrty by Christina Aguilera?"

im such a sucker for cute girls i dont have the heart to cuss
them out for being so lame, so i normally say "um, i already
did, and they told me i cant repeat tracks, sorry" or "yeah,
i will, in a minute".

now thinking of it, i think the best way to kill those hip hop
heads is to actually give them what they want, or meet em half
way at least.

Missy Elliot feat. Monica - Im So Gone (Scumfrog Remix) <-- killer track, and you could pass it off ass hip hop

G&D's blend of Tyree Cooper's Acid Crash with that Missy Elliot Acappella called "Acid Elliot" <--- play the original live with the acappella from a CD and scratch the vocals, tweak em, etc

or, since most people think if a DJ can scratch, he is cool, well,
learn to scratch! breaks & scratching go hand and hand, and breaks
can go with any other genre, not to mention hip hop comes from breaks.

so you play some proggy/trancey breaks, then some heavier breaks, scratch a bit, play with the crowd, and drop back into trance. one of my fav. DJs does this, mixing all styles from melodic prog to hphoppish breaks (James Zabiela). if you want to see him in action, search the music discussion forum for a vidoe of him and sasha @ mondaybar...

naw man.. i'm not gonna change my style just because some ignorant pop fan asks me to play some track i have no desire to spin.. on the other hand, if a dj is doing his job right, the dj is enjoying himself just as much as the dancers in front of him. i enjoy what i do and i get a lot of passion from it, but to play a different genre of music just because my crowd isn't digging it isn't really my style. i prefer to spin at parties that i know the crowd will enjoy my music. my friends have asked me to spin at house parties (and i've done it many times) but i don't feel the same thrill as a trance party, rave, or an e party.

On a sort of related note, I got a good laugh out of one girl a week or two ago.

Was chatting with her and convinced her to step into the electronic room (DnB that night I think it was). She asked me what he (the DJ) was doing, and when I briefly explained it, she was just sitting there looking at me blankly.

Apparently the concept that DJs actually have to do something in order to smoothly move from track to track is pretty wild.

one night,
I was just starting my set after a hip hop DJ that a girl came to me and asked "Ho can you play that song... what's it called again ? you know it plays on the radio."

"you have good music. We are Russians... we like fast music" (with russian accent)

during a small gig in a lounge in summer 2003: "Can you play that song from the movie Blade ?"

So many people do not even realize how much work it is to learn how to beatmatch, keymatch and phasematch. Then do it perfectly live.

i was playing a set at my sister's 21st, and the 40yo bloke from next door came up to me, and says: "you know, ive got an old panasonic in my garage, you can have that for $20. at least itll save you from having to push the record around yourself!"

well, i respect that; i just threw it in there because i love breaks

but no DJ ive seen can play a prolonged set staying true to one AND ONLY
one genre. just an idea, but mixing styles up is fun. best DJs for me are
the ones who play GOOD MUSIC period.

no doubt .. i bet you're hella good
at just about every party i've spun at there has always been a request for hip hop.. however at one party this fairly drunk girl requested that "i go home with her".. being a dj does grant you special privledges..

well, you need to make sure she got home alright... being drunk and
all, someone might try and take advantage

and yeah right, i wish i was hella good, but i dont even have my
own tables , spin with a friends @ parties he throws. i'd be way
better if i could afford my own decks and start buying my own
vinyls.

Other then the Hip Hop comments....

Funny/Bad:

"You're not going to play that glow stick music are you?"
- I spin progressive Trance/House so I answered "No"

"Can you pllleeeaasssseee put on some Justin Timberlake?"

"So are you almost done? Then can we put on ______ (Hip Hop, 80s, etc)"

Good:

"I dont like Techno stuff, but I like what you play"

"Why don't clubs play this kind of stuff?"
