if you didnt like the hobbit you would hate the trilogy. but you might like the movies. i thought they were much easier to follow than the books.

Not nesecarrily, the Hobbit is quite simplistic when you contrast it with the trilogy (Not to mention the Silmarillion). Give it another shot I say.
