look around there

Posted by mndeg on Dec-26-2003 20:31:

except that guide is not accurate

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Dec-26-2003 20:52:

Its actually largely accurate, but it just doesn't like most styles of music.

Ah, glorious progressive trance.

Ishkur's guide is moderately accurate; people just get pissed off because of his attitude in presenting the genres. I certainly disagree with some of what he has there (e.g. grouping Paul van Dyk and Fragma in the same category, which he refuses to change), but you won't find any better guide out there.

Tech-Trance is emerging as a genuine subgenre of its own. Producers include Marco V, Katana, Marcel Woods, F Massif, F&W, and DJ Montana, among others. Marco V has been spinning it for years, and only recently has Tiesto actually been playing it a bit as well.

And "emotional trance"? Speaking as a genre nazi, I have to say that's one of the stupidest terms I've ever heard, and it most certainly does not exist. There's a spectum between plain old "trance" and "uplifting (or epic) trance", but no "emotional trance" "euphoric trance" or any other garbage terms that tack on a similar synonym.

Psy Trance- Infected mushroom, Astral Projection, Hallucinogen etc...

Posted by noikeee on Dec-27-2003 00:23:

i always thought that half of l-vee and mike's tunes were progressive trance, and the other half simply uplifting (except for a few techy tracks by mike).

Correct.

i see it as, without e-music being broken into 1000 catgorizations:

(feel free to correct me, or quote and edit it to add artists or
change genres, so all of us can get the right idea)

Trance
- Hard Trance (Artists: Dumonde, etc)
- Uplifting Trance
- Progressive Trance (Artists: Leama, Humate, etc.)
- Techtrance (Artists: Marco V)
- Psytrance (psychedelic trance) (Artists: Infected Mushrom)
- Chillout Trance
- Deep Trance

House
- Progressive House (Artists: Steve Porter, Nalin & Kane)
- Funk House (Artists: Erick Morillo)
- Tribal House (Artists: Chus & Ceballos, Joeski, Marcelo Castelli)
- Tech House
- Psychedelic House
- Deep House (Artists: Kevin Yost)
- Hard House (Artists: Bad Boy Bill, Robbie Rivera)

Breakbeats
- Florida Breaks
- Nuskool Breaks
(a little help in this area would be appreciated)

Techno
- Detroit Techno (Artists: Derrick May)
- German Techno (Artists: Sven Vath)
- Minimal Techno (Artists: Danilo Vigorito)

Electro
- Can't really find any subgenres for this

Jungle
(help needed for this)

Drum 'n Bass
(help needed for this)

----------------------------------

yes, some people get a bit fuzzy when i mention psy house, but
i believe it is a proper subgenre, as it does describe a proper
categorization. check out Slacker - Live @ Global DJ Broadcast on
03-03-2003, to get a feel of what i mean. i didnt list slacker
as an artist for that subgenre because he is very versatile,
cant just call him that, although, that set defines psy house
pretty good. on the side of techno, i only listed those three
because the others just seem to have very little variation IMO.

Frankly, I think chillout/ambient should be its own genre.

i thought of it that way to a little bit, but i was too lazy
to type up a proper section for chillout/ambient. do the honors,
and ill edit it into my original post, or go ahead and quote/edit
it yourself.

What happened to normal trance/house/techno etc?

Posted by swe_Trancer on Dec-27-2003 04:12:

psydub
brokenbeats
latin house
ukhardhouse
chicagohardhouse
speedcore
terrorcore
goa
psytekk
UKgarage
speedgarage
elektropunk
big beat

Posted by DJ-Fuq on Dec-27-2003 04:47:

he doesnt play much trance anymore

and ISHKUR put flutlicht icarus into anthem when it's clearly hard trance
of course its an anthem, but anthem doesnt make it its own genre of "anthem" or else 50% of all songs would go under that

Posted by torontotrance on Dec-27-2003 05:06:

then again...ishkur never had a clue.
