Canada is the hockey powerhouse of the world, though we sometimes blow tournaments when we obviously have the superior teams (the last couple Juniors against USA and Russia), the Olympics 98 and the World Cup in 96.

But as for Russian...Canada owns their ass in international hockey. 1972 Summit Series, 1984, 87 and 91 Canada Cup..all Canadian wins against the USSR.

Europeans have some great players, but they can't take the physical stuff. They whine so much about it. And the best players throughout the history of the NHL are 90% Canadian, from goaltenders, to forwards and defencemen (as well as coaches). I shouldn't have to name any if anybody on here really knows hockey.

The rest of the major hockey nations are, as Gretzky said, jealous of Canada and they do like to see us lose. Fuck 'em all I say.

My other point is go to Hockey Hall Of Fame and take a good look at the awards and the stanley cup itself and even the members of the hall of fame. What nationality are they?

Posted by Matt on Jan-05-2004 21:14:

congrats USA

you win this round... until next time!

Posted by infinity HiGH on Jan-05-2004 21:16:

TT, chill the fuck out

nobody here is arguing about Canada's place in the hockey world. You're acting like whiney loser. Canada lost...this isn't the first time it happend, and if it helps you sleep at night, it was just the juniors. When the actual Canada team plays, they'll win. Get over it.

Posted by torontotrance on Jan-05-2004 21:17:

Round 2 is considered in March (Women's World Championships)
Round 3 is the hockey playoffs (which cdn's will lead their teams to the final and one will lead his team to the cup)
Round 4 is the NHL AWARDS CELEBRATION IN JUNE
Round 5 is WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY in Sept 2004 in Toronto

then again, take a look at the hockey hall of fame.....really mostly Canadians because we have the best players.

Let me ask you something... When did 1st ever Russian player arrive at the NHL?

We have what it takes, we got to the final 3 yrs in a row

Did you win in the finals 3 years in a row? Didn't think so.

I don't think Europeans really understand the depth with hockey and culture it is in this country and how personally we take hockey as a sport

Well, I do understand that hockey is the only sport Canadians are good at. They suck at everything else (except curling). No wonder there is always so much fuss about hockey here in Canada.

Posted by torontotrance on Jan-05-2004 21:24:

Lacrosse
Speed Skating
Swimming
Racing

shall I go on? We rule at those

No one understands the link with Hockey, Culture and Country and most of you have not been born here and you don't understand the deal that the game means to Canadians. I don't mind people saying our national team sucks but when you trash a country that you live in, then that's wrong.

I'm not trashing the country. I love Canada! I'm simply stating some facts about their abilities in sports.

The first Russians came over in the late 70's and early 80's and they're still not as good as the Canadians in the NHL. Look at the Conn Smythe Trophy (for the most valuable player in the playoffs) and it's been won by Canadians all but two times. Once by an American and the other by a Russian.

It's people like you who I can't stand. You come over here to our country and all you do is bitch about it and cut it up. Go back home for fuck's sake.

All I do is bitch ?? Interesting. I've only "bitched" in this thread. If you call that "all I do is bitch" you've got some serious issues.
Besides, as I have already posted, I wasn't bitching at Canada. I was only talking about Canadian hockey and the fact that Canada sucks at every other sport. Big difference. And even then, I was only doing so because of TT's provocation(calling Russians commies and saying that they didn't deserve to win last year)

Posted by infinity HiGH on Jan-05-2004 21:29:

K...TT...shutup, honestly, you're making shit up right now. Nobody here is trashing the country. If you need to vent cause you're pissed that Canada lost, then go for a jog or have a smoke, but don't come here and fuckin make shit up that somebody is trashing Canada; or that Canada has no place in hockey; etc etc etc.

And dont' give me that shit that you have to be born here to "understand" hockey. I love hockey as much as the next guy. I love playing it, and I love watching it so don't say that you have to be Canadian to truly appreciate hockey cause it's not even Canada's national sport

Posted by torontotrance on Jan-05-2004 21:30:

Not many countries excel in a lot of sports (bar the americans and their money and their training programs). I mean you don't get many exceptional countries who kick ass at many sports. Hockey is life to Canadian born people, I grew up playing it and even tho I retired at age 18 from it, I've never given up the never say die attitude and the win at all costs that the National Hockey Program in Canada teaches kids (they lie about it, 2nd place is unacceptable). You love our country then great....but I seem to be accused of being a true homer about this game when I never enjoyed losing and still hate it. I'm convinced that if you are a male that is born in Canada, you play hockey early and just keep going with it.....it's LIFE.

Unofficially, hockey is our national sport. Actually, I seem to recall us having two national sports...hockey for the winter, and lacrosse for the summer.

But whatever...the important thing is that hockey is one of the few things that truly unites this country and it is a symbol of our culture. I don't care if you weren't born here or not, but it's a big offence when people start saying Canada isn't the best at hockey. (which we obviously ARE)

Posted by starshine on Jan-05-2004 21:32:

sounds like it was a good game with a close score as is to be expected

canada definitely has it's place at the top of the hockey world...as a 'yank' (as you all like to refer to us as ) i won't argue with that...but there's nothing wrong with a little friendly competition

Posted by torontotrance on Jan-05-2004 21:37:

infinity high....you fail to understand it as well. I was saying that non Canadians don't realize the amount of pressure put on hockey players at an early age and when you play hockey from an early age, you understand the concept that our game is truly connected with life. Hard to explain but when you grow up doing this, you understand it better. Only other kids who grew up playing hockey in Canada understand truly what this game means. If you are not Canadian born then you don't truly understand it. I can't quite explain it but our country has molded many about this game. I may have been mean and jumped durafei but he jumped me and all the emotions are running in this thread but I do apologize, it was not my intention but losing in Hockey was taught to me at an early age as unacceptable and I've carried it to my mid 20's. I wish I had not learned that way of sports because it has taken the joy of it. One day, I shall try to explain the true mentality of hockey (when you are born here, you understand it) but if your not, you don't quite understand it. Closest example is the soccer mad countries in the World, they hate to lose and soccer is life...that's what hockey is like in Canada. Pathetic I know but no coach ever thought of that....they just wanted to win.

Posted by torontotrance on Jan-05-2004 21:38:

being half american (american mother) who rubbed it in badly just about 2 hrs ago....did not help

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Jan-05-2004 21:39:

Proper football (soccer) is to England/Brazil/Germany etc what hockey is to Canada. It's part of our national character (those who were born here anyway)

Posted by infinity HiGH on Jan-05-2004 21:43:

Nobody ever remembers the losers; and thats why people play sports (well, one of the reasons); is to leave a mark and be remembered. And you don't accomplish that by being in 2nd place.

As for Canada being the best in hockey, or not being, well, don't take it so harshly I think anyone that remotely follows hockey knows how big of a mark Canada, and Canadians players have in hockey. Definately number 1 as far as having the biggest hockey history; but they're/we're not always number 1. You can't win all the time.

I wouldn't compare hockey to soccer; soccer fans in England, Brazil and other parts of the world are a lot more crazy than Canadian hockey fans. We don't start riots in Toronto if the Habs beat the Leafs. lol

Posted by torontotrance on Jan-05-2004 21:52:

in the 50's they did but you understand it somewhat but I honestly think that if you are Canadian born and played hockey for a while....you truly understand it (or better than most what role that this game plays in this country's hearts and minds). I got so mad because we gave up 3 goals in one period and basically said No you take the Gold, we shall be happy with silver. Revenge will be taken because we hate to lose in Hockey. With the soccer example, it was the closest thing to it.....that's the bond with Canadians who played the game. I should have realized that so many of you lot on here are not Canadian born....many of you came to Canada seeking a better life or whatever oppt we have (dunno which tho....lol....seems the job market went to hell) and never grew up playing hockey like I and others did (I mean takes a true idiot to play shinny on a pond in -40C, so you must be addicted somehow). So I guess next year, we will win silver again and I'll go mad again and probably get told off for being a homer.....ah well c'est la vie. I hold nothing against no one for this thread, it shows the depth of different people from different countries (the melting pot that Canada has truly become).

Posted by infinity HiGH on Jan-05-2004 22:28:

It's all good...I know Canadians are passionate about hockey like Americans are passionate about bombing the crap out of stuff. It just irked me that you guys were taking this SO seriously and saying that we're trash-talking Canada, etc.

Posted by torontotrance on Jan-05-2004 22:31:

Which was my initial point, you don't understand the true nature of taking it so seriously unless you are born here and played hockey growing up here. That's a part of the culture and the game which a lot of us wish, we never learned.

I'm glad I played hockey as a kid. It's one violent, fast paced, emotionally charged game (and I was only 5'9...I used to get killed in high school hockey sometimes). I'm not sorry that Canadians put so much into us winning at hockey...I get mad when we lose (just as I hate seeing England lose in soccer), but cheering for Canada in international hockey is almost always better than the NHL.

Posted by Projekt4.o on Jan-06-2004 00:42:

okay TorontoTrance if it makes u happy Poland sucks in hokey, probably any team from NHL could beat our national team so what I still cheer for them maybe one day we will be playin in some real tournament and not in those lower groups with other teams that aren`t hokey powerhouses

Posted by failsafe on Jan-06-2004 01:08:

Poland sucks at war too.

Posted by Dmatrox on Jan-06-2004 01:25:

The Americans were lucky to win it this time.
